I spotted a gorgeous ring last week while at the jewellers. I don’t make it a habit to walk into jewellery shops because lets face it, jewellery is an expensive hobby to get into! 😛 But while browsing, my eyes fell on a ring that I found myself really liking. It was a diamond ring with a solitaire and was interesting enough that I felt it could pass off as a regular diamond ring and not an engagement ring. However, I also am the sort not to really care even it indeed looked like an engagement ring 🙂
Being a big ticket purchase, naturally I wasn’t ready to drop the money off the bat. I later talked to 3 people about it and was a little surprised when one of them told me that I shouldn’t be buying my own diamond solitaire but should wait for someone to buy it – possibly meaning as an engagement ring. However, if it was a different design then maybe yes, get it. The other 2 I spoke to said “If you love it, get it!”
It got me curious to know if people actually thought this. Would you buy your own diamond ring or will you prefer to wait for someone to buy it for you? For the sake of argument, lets assume that you can afford it yourself 🙂
As I’ve said above, I don’t usually care what people think. I’m not a slave to convention although I do know that people have quite set ideas about things like diamond solitaires. If I like the design and the price is friendly enough to my wallet without putting me in the poor house, then I’d just get it. Interestingly, my Mum told me the exact same thing when I spoke to her about it. She said get it, if you like it! So clearly, that’s where I get my unconventional streak from 😀
Granted, those who are already engaged or married may have different thoughts from singles, for whom this maybe a bit of a touchy subject, so I do think it would be interesting to hear what you think 🙂
Will you buy a diamond (solitaire) ring for yourself or will you prefer that someone buy it for you?

I would buy it. Diamonds and luxury watches are proofs of my success. When I achieve something big or reach predetermined milestone, I go out and get something nice for myself. Plus diamonds and luxury watches accumulate values over time.

I would get it for myself if I really, really liked it :3 but I don’t think I would wear a diamond ring out often though :X

I never thought so too so perhaps you may think the same way later in life 😉

i can’t think of any reason to not buy one for myself if i really want it and can afford it.. and where in the world such a belief came from that diamond rings are for engagement purposes only? it’s a great investment that you can pass on your future daughter 🙂

Good point Jen and indeed! It must be all those darned jewellers who make us think diamond rings must only be for engagements! Clever of them, but spoils the market for the rest of us 😀

I definitely would buy any jewelry I fall in love with myself if I could afford it. No waiting around or hinting to anyone else for me!

I got engaged in Sept 2012 and my (now) fiancée bought me a Swarovski earring and necklace set which he proposed with. He knew I liked it because I had gushed over it whilst shopping in NYC. He had done tons of research on rings but wanted me to pick something I knew I liked, and I was so glad he did. We went ring shopping straight after he proposed and 2 days later, I found the perfect ring, still whilst on holiday in NYC!
I think a lot of couples now pick the ring out before the proposal, but I’m glad the proposal went the way it did for me 🙂

I found this site as I would like to buy myself a small diamond band. I am more superstitious than caring about a man lol! If you can afford it, buy it. If someone buys you one…well then you now have 2 🙂 Life is too short. Spend your money on what makes you happy!
