Dior has a set of 4 new eyeshadow palettes – the New Look eyeshadow palettes which are a variation on the 5 Couleur eyeshadow palettes with cannage imprint. Dior has decided to go back to its fashion roots for inspiration and each of the 4 palettes are based on colours drawn from Christian Dior’s 1947 New Look collection.
I will show you the others later – but I just had to show you this one – 834 Rose Porcelaine because it is the palette I was the most uncertain about. In the stock photos, you see a warmed toned pink palette of eyeshadows that just make me think “Uhoh! Pink-eyed bunny alert!” In real life, I thought it was less so. In fact, the pink is pale with cool tones and I just had to have a dig in, because I like a challenge.
I usually fear pink eyeshadow like the plague, but what I did not expect was to actually like this palette!
What you get in this palette is a deep cool toned purple, a pale pink, a medium pink, a beige and a cream. All colours have shimmer but true to form, Dior eyeshadow palettes never have shimmer that is over the top. The texture is light with colours that sit beautifully on the skin and move with the skin without looking chalky or heavy.
I pondered a little on how best to wear this, before deciding to use it the way I would use all my eyeshadow palettes – a dark colour accent at the outer corners, and the lighter shades blending outwards from the inner corner. My fear was of course the pinks but much to my surprise, I was afraid of nothing.
Both pinks are cool toned and very pale and on my skin has a soft ethereal finish. For some reason, they help to bring out the tone in the deep purple shade which I used as my focus colour.
And as you can see, there is no pink bunny eye nor am I channeling the “I just cried a bucket and now have puffy red rimmed eyes” look 🙂
To be honest, I don’t think this palette is for everyone. If you are adventurous and aren’t one for very strong pigmented shades, and want a palette that is a little different, which gives a fresh spring sort of eye look, I would think its worth taking a gander at Rose Porcelaine. The majority will, I feel, shy away for reasons of it being pink and sheer. But the brave ones may discover a palette that brightens the eyes and is unexpected, in a very demure, very pretty sort of way.
The very tanned or dark skinned may not like this palette as much as the others. The pinks and creams may just apply as white shimmer on your skin and you will be disappointed. So this one is, I feel more for those with fair to medium skintones and perhaps for those who take cool colour tones better.
The trick I feel is in making sure the eyes are defined. I make sure to line my eyes nicely and use lashings of mascara while keeping the rest of the eye makeup a soft sweet, smokey-but-not look. I paired my look with the Face of Australia Malibu Barbie lipstick which is a very cool, very bright pink. I toned it down and warmed it up by blending in some Lunasol Liquid Lips in Sugar Pink and I kept the cheeks light with the Lunasol cheek blush in Modelling Cheeks EX-01 Soft Pink.
Rose Porcelaine surprised me, but it was a very pleasant surprise 🙂
In a nutshell
Rose Porcelaine is one of 4 Dior New Look eyeshadow palettes. The texture is quitessentially Dior – sheer colours and shimmer that isn’t over the top. All colours are easily blended and layered and when used with a brush can go on quite opaque. The colours in Rose Porcelaine may suit those with fair skin better because the light colours may not show up very well otherwise. It will also be better for those who can handle cool tones as I felt this palette to be on the cool side, despite the warmth in the stock photos. I think this to be a lovely Spring sort of palette but I will have to say that this may not be for everyone.
Pros: Colours are easy to layer and blend without looking chalky or heavy, No fall out and shimmer isn’t chunky nor glittery, Fresh colours that brighten the eye area without making eyes look red rimmed or tired
Cons: Pricey, Colours may not suit everyone especially those who are very tanned or dark skinned

Are you brave enough to wear pink on your eyes? Is the Dior New Look Rose Porcelaine eyeshadow palette something you think you may be able to pull of? I didn’t think so but taking the plunge helped. It also helps that I knew that a cool toned colour would suit be better than if it was warm bright pinks, so I’m all for the cool muted ethereal shades in this one 🙂
