Your Say: Is there a popular brand of cosmetics you cannot use?

shu uemura old formula eyeshadows

I’ve received a couple of very encouraging emails recently that has really helped to brighten my day – and if you are reading, coz I know you are, thank you! One of the questions I had been fielding related to the new Shu Uemura Atelier eyeshadows.

You might have seen them in the stores and counters. New Shu Uemura eyeshadow formulations that come in handy palettes that you can mix and match to your requirements. I didn’t check them out for the longest time until very recently, and the reason is primarily because, I couldn’t wear Shu Uemura eyeshadows.

It was an expensive mistake to find out, let me tell you that! I used to own so many colours of their original formula (and I kept a few of my favourites) but I realized that the eyeshadows made my eyes feel very uncomfortable.

I did not break out in a rash or anything drastic, thank goodness. My eyelids just felt incredibly heavy and irritated as the day wears on. I don’t even know if anyone understands this feeling.

It was very unfortunate because the texture of the original Shu Uemura eyeshadows are sublime. We have not seen its like since they have been reformulated, twice so far. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that not even the new Atelier eyeshadows can compare to the original formula.

I had a similar problem with Shiseido The Makeup eyeshadows – you know the ones in the oval case? The new Luminizing Color Trios don’t irritate my eyes thankfully, but eye products in sub brands like Majolica Majorca do, including their mascara (the reason you don’t see my trying much by Majolica Majorca here).  Oh and not forgetting the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils! Iconic as anything but break me out big time 🙁

These aren’t the only makeup brands I can’t use, but its among the popular ones and that used to really bug me until I learnt to let it go – age does have its merits 😛

Your Say: Is there a popular brand of cosmetics you cannot use for whatever reason?

Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream breaks me out. Which is so annoying since their #13 was a colour finally light enough for me to wear. >.<
And I can't seem to use Hada Labo's Hyaluronic Acid Lotion all over my face. Oo So now I use the remainings as a lotion mask for under the eyes.

Oh Julia, that sucks that you found your perfect colour match in BB Cream and it had to break you out! I actually break out quite a lot from Korean BB Creams but less so with creams from Western or Japan brands. I wonder if its their composition of ingredients.

I guess it’s similar to your eyeshadow situation. (Too bad the layering doesn’t really work for you either. >.<) I know there are problems way worse, but I start to grow tired of this horrible skin.
Holika Holika BB Creams work for me, but they're too dark. My next (and probably last) try will be Innisfree.

You know what Julia, I had horrible stubborn skin too. But I soon grew out of it. I know waiting is hard, but sometimes, time is what you may need 🙂

Oh, and Paris: I don’t know if you tried it already, but would layering your beloved Shue Uemura colours over something (primer, eyelid base, cream shadow etc.) ease the pain for you?

I guess I ‘can’t’ use Benefit products because somehow they just slide all over my face and smudge horribly. They don’t break me out in particular but somehow my face just cannot ‘hold on’ to Benefit makeup.

Oh and I can’t use the Mandom Cleansing Water either – I might be allergic to it, it makes my skin all bumpy and itchy and red. Yikes!

Sounds like you are indeed allergic to the Mandom Cleansing Water! I have the one in a tube, and that works quite well for me for emergencies. Pity about the Benefit makeup too. Maybe your skin just doesn’t like how it feels 😉

For cosmetics, I would say any MAC base makeup items. I always had breakouts ater using any of them, be it Blot Powder or Mineralize Skinfinish. For skincare, definitely Shu Uemura’s cleansing oil for me.

Gosh another MAC reaction! I’ve actually never used MAC base products so I can’t say but I have heard of others who have had the same problem too. I guess that’s a good incentive to find other alternatives 🙂

Nothing that gives too bad rof eaction. I don’t quite like the Biore SPF moisturizer, it makes my skin flaky. Anna Sui and Majolica Majorca eyeshadows are also a little flaky or powdery so if they get in my eyes it will make them a tad irritated.

If you own any Anna Sui or Majolica, try patting them in. I find that some shadows that seem powdery work better when patted in instead of swiped on and they stay on longer too 🙂

        YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH THANK YOU!
But I think that the pan that are actually sold have a new texture, different that the one of your e/s

I have tried Guerlain khol pencil yesterday and I won’t buy it, it is not black enough, ok for lining but is nit good for the waterline.

Here we can order YR online but I don’t know if they ship internationally. It is not expensive, there are always discount but if their foundation burnt me out I prefer never try their products again on my face.
There is nothing natural in them (parabens..)
Even the SA told me that if the foundation did that to me, I should never use their products again.
Maybe their shower gel 🙂 But their eye shadows are really bad..

I have a boutique near my home, I wish you could give me a Shu boutique and that I could give you my YR boutique 🙂
We only have 2 Shu Uemura boutique in France and very far from where I live. So sad..Besides it IS SOOO CRAZY EXPENSIVE here, I need to buy internationaly and it’s hard.

The new Shu Uemura eyeshadow formula is different from the one in the photo. Those are a few years old. I prefer the texture of the old one but at least I don’t have an allergy to the new formula.

Hmm, I can’t use H20+ Night Oasis Overnight Moisture Lock. It’s like a leave on masque & you just go to bed after that. When it touches my face, it’s fine, but going into 5 mins it stung like mad. I thought that it should be this way so I waited for another 20 mins and I couldn’t stand it any more & washed it off. You know what? It still continued stinging for like 2 hrs… T_T…

I didn’t know what happened & my whole face was so so red. I couldn’t tell what actually triggered the sensitivity coz the moisturisers are all similiar in ingredients & do contain alcohol… The next day I brought it back and exchanged it with something else. Luckily I could change it if not it will go to waste.

Another thing is, no beeswax on lip products for me or my lips will swell up like sausage and it tastes weird in the mouth by just inhaling… 🙁

Goodness, that is an awful reaction to the mask! Glad you were able to return it. Some places won’t even offer an exchange. And your comment about beeswax reminded me of Connie’s comment! She can’t wear Beeswax in lip products too 🙂

I can’t use any powder product from MAC as they all make me break out. I also can’t use Sisley’s at all. However the reaction to Sisley’s is far worse.

The only stuff that I use from this brand is their cleansing oil and their eyelashes curler lol!I dont like their makeup collection especially their lipstick which is wayy to pearly and frosty for me, their eyeshadows are rather pricey, I can get my hand on MAC or INGLOT for better values and lasting-ness.

Paris, do u double cleanse after using the oil? They said its not necessary to cleanse your face again after using the shu uemura oil coz its more like 2 in 1 cleanser, but I’ll make sure that I do cleanse wt my regular cleanser after that.

Hiya! Yes I do double cleanse with all cleansing oils. I don’t use Shu because it breaks me out but whichever one I use, I always double cleanse. Some say its not necessary but I feel it is as I treat cleansing oils as a makeup remover 🙂

I love super love Laneige. Actually its becoz of Song Hye Kyo but my face juz can’t take it no matter how much i try to love it. I juz had so much breakout. My face was clear until i started with Laneige. I’m not sure why but I might be over doing it or probably i’m juz sensitive to the products but i really regret coz I have scars all over and now i breakout occasionally… I’ve changed brand to Vichy but it didn’t work for me and now i’m using Oxy & Hada Labo. Finally restoring my face. Loving Oxy & Hada Labo!! It juz shows that drug store brands can b better than departmental store products! Don’t judge the quality by its price!!

I wish Malaysia would adopt the same concept practiced in USA and UK whereby if the consumer has a reaction to a product or is dissatisfied with it, he/she is able to return the product for a refund or exchange.

Laneige left me with a skin coloured rash that won’t go away. Kose Sekkisei range was too harsh despite being touted that even the most sensitive skin would be suitable for usage. Sigh… money down the drain.

I’m not sure, but at some counters, if you do experience a bad reaction to their product, they may allow an exchange. I can’t be 100% sure, but it never hurts to ask at the counter or if you are very adamant, to bring it up to their higher levels. I find that Korean and Japanese skincare have a high level of alcohol, so although they say its suitable for sensitive skin, I think it depends on the level of sensitivity one has to alcohol. Sorry to hear these didn’t work out for you.
