Day 27 of 30: YSL Rouge Pur Couture 04 Rouge Vermillion and a Reader’s Request

August 3, 2011 Paris B 25 Comments

When I last talked about the Coffret D’or Beauty Sharp blush, reader Dorami asked if the bronzer bit of the blush kit could work as eyeshadow and if the whole blush palette might then be used for an all over face look. I thought that was a brilliant idea, so I put it to work.

I ran into problems right away. The bronzer part doesn’t show up pigmented enough on the lids as an eyeshadow. To get around that, I lined the lid liberally with a black pencil, blended it up and then layered the brown colour on it. All it did was serve to give a tiny bit of definition to the eye area. I ended up blending in some coral, pink and most of the brown. It applies very very sheerly, so I think it makes a good blush and bronzer because its not too strongly coloured but as an eyeshadow, its not worth trying 🙂

Still, with such a plain look for the face, it was a good opportunity to wear a nice bright lippie! I picked mine out in the YSL Rouge Pur Couture 04 Rouge Vermillion. It has been described as Raspberry Red but I say pish! Its anything but that!

I picked this colour up at Heathrow last year (gosh! Time flies!) because YSL is no longer available here in Malaysia (except KLIA I believe) and I wanted to check out their (then) new Rouge Pur Couture. It is a very pigmented range of lipsticks, with a lovely smooth creamy texture and a satin finish. Perfect if you like strong lip colours, not so if you prefer the sheer balm textures brands have been shoving at us lately.Me, I love it.

I’m not too crazy over the traditional square packaging of YSL lipsticks. It looks old fashioned to me. I’m also not crazy over the super shiny gold case that smudges the minute you touch it. CSI would have a field day dusting it for prints. I also found that it did not have a nice heft which I tend to associate with the luxury brand lipsticks. Packaging is as important to me as the product.

But as a product, I think its stellar.

The colour shown is with just 1 swipe. Its lovely and creamy and the colour on lips is basically what you get in the tube. 04 Rouge Vermillion is a slightly warmed red that isn’t so bright that you can’t wear it to work. Its not a glamourpuss sort of red. Its a wearable day-to-day sort of red but it is by no stretch of imagination a raspberry red as decribed. Its not matte, but not glossy. The satin description fits it to a T.

It does a great job of brightening up an otherwise simple look so I even forgave it the slight scent that is bound to be present in most French cosmetics.

In a nutshell

A lovely creamy, pigmented lipstick with satin finish that has pretty good lasting power, lasting me well over 4 hours with 1 application. Colour on skin is close to the colour in the tube. There is a slight fragrance which dissipates quickly. Rouge Vermillion is as described – just don’t believe the descriptions of raspberry red which it isn’t.

Pros: Creamy texture, Pigmented colour, Satin finish that does not leave lips looking flat, Not drying

Cons: Slightly fragranced, Pricey, Not a fan of the gold shiny square packaging

YSL Rouge Pur Couture lipsticks have SPF15 which I think is great since I don’t use sunscreen on my lips anyway, and is formulated without parabens, sulfates and petrochemicals. What I think is great is how it despite all that, it has such a lovely texture and bright vibrant colour. I had a hard time choosing my colour at the YSL counter and if we had YSL back here, I just know I’d have a hard time choosing another 🙂

If you have tried this lippie, do let me know what you think of it. Incidentally, if you are keen on giving this one a go, its available on StrawberryNET.com too!

YSL Rouge Pur Couture lipsticks retail at £22.50 / US$30 each or £17 at Heathrow I think. They are unavailable in Malaysia at time of writing. You can also purchase them on Strawberrynet

So agreed with you on the packaging… I got my mom and godma some YSL lippies as presents before they disappeared from Malaysia and yeah, I had to do some clean-up to make sure the case was free of fingerprints before I wrapped it up… and for a supposedly ‘luxury’ brand, the lippie just felt light and ‘cheap’ in my palm… 🙁 Thankfully, both mothers loved the lippies inside and I may have created a lippie monster out of my mom… heheh…

p.s. Would love to see more of the top (or is it dress?) that you’re wearing in the pic above… love the lacey neckline! Does it go all the way? 😛

Just before YSL pulled out was one of the best times to pick up their cosmetics 😛 But yeah that shiny surface is gorgeous but it looks manky so quickly 🙁 The top is actually a tee-shirt from Uniqlo 😀 Its got lace around the scoop neck collar

OMG, I love that colour on you! It’s the “pick me up” kinda colour!

I have one in Noir, like a really dark blackberry colour but I haven’t had a chance to just wear it properly…

I personally don’t mind the packaging too much. The square-ish packaging is perfect for storing (c/f to round one).

Thanks Lee 🙂 I couldn’t carry off Noir but it sounds like a colour you’d pick 😉 I find the square corners a bit sharp. Poked myself a few times already!

Thank you lemon 🙂 I actually haven’t been doing anything different so it could be a number of factors, or it could just be very good makeup and lighting 😉 But thank yoU!

Hey Paris, I was wondering how long you keep your puppies. I have a hard time finishing a tube because of the variety of colours I like to keep. Ppl tell me it’s 3-5 years of opening or until it smells bad. What’s your opinion?

puppies? That’s new to me! 😀 I keep them as long as they still work and feel good. Once I detect a rancid smell, out they go into the bin.

Thanks Hanny 🙂 I saw a small selection at KLIA last I was there, but I’m not sure if they carry the latest products or if they are just selling off whatever they have in stock.

But you know what, together with this YSL lippie, the finished look is absolutely stunning. That pic of yours, very attractive indeed!

It’s an unusual Chinese New Year this year. It’s the first time since I left home that I did not make an early morning drive home for CNY for the reunion dinner (I always do so to beat traffic). It’s the first time I’m spending CNY in KL. It’s the first time my hair is looking such a mess for CNY 😂
Regardless, we do this not for ourselves but for others so we can have more joyful CNY celebrations to come.
