Day 6 of 30 : Maybelline Watershine Pure Diamonds #304

May 10, 2011 Paris B 10 Comments

One of my first lipsticks was from Maybelline – Jewel Berry. I bought it over and over because I used to be really boring that way. Maybelline and I have moved on since, but I’ve always held a soft spot for their lippies because they are inexpensive little treats that are really nice. This is especially so when I have a soft spot for sheer moisturizing lipsticks in the Japanese style and the Maybelline Watershine range delivers on all counts on this one sans hefty price tag.

I’ve tried quite a few from the Maybelline Watershine range (3D Collagen, Watershine) which I like for the sheer subtle colour and shine. Not everyone’s cuppa that’s for sure.

In keeping with the 2011 trend for sheer shiny lipstick (seriously, is there a memo somewhere that brands consult?) Maybelline has Watershine Pure Diamonds. The colour featured here is #304 which looks pretty in the tube but is in fact, a very very light shiny pink. So light, the swatches barely show up, and so light I was sure I’d look like the walking dead. So it took quite a bit of thinking to get this colour to work 😉

Here are the swatches. I swatched the one on the left once and on the right 3 times. Not much difference right?

Its even less obvious on the lips. On my rather pigmented lips, all I get is a sheer shine with a tiny hint of pink. I need to layer it about 3 times to get it to show up at all!

To avoid looking like the walking dead (pale lips do that to me) I played up my eyes and piled on the blush.

Would I recommend this one? Yes if you want to venture into lipstick territory but are not yet ready to give up your shiny lipgloss. This one is a good inexpensive option. I might prefer it in a different deeper colour but then that’s just my style. I am quite pleased with this one though. It forced me out of my comfort zone and made me think of how I could build a look around a pale lipstick – and I’d like to think I pulled it off 🙂

Pros: Lightweight texture, Sheer shiny colour  and texture, Inexpensive

Cons: Too sheer and/or shiny for some, Low lasting power

I must note that this colour, being so pale and light did not last very long on me. All it took was 1 cup of coffee and about 2 glasses of water and it was gone. Some sparkles do remain but I can’t say how a deeper colour would last. I like the texture despite its low staying power but I probably have to choose a brighter/deeper colour next.

Do you own one of these? I believe there are more colours to choose from so don’t let this pale shade deter you from trying this range 🙂

I’ve got the one in # S02 which is a cool pink with blue undertone. It is the brightest pink of the lot. It may seemed a neon pink colour in the tube but once applied on the lips, it is a pretty girlish pink. You may want to give it a try the next time.

These lipsticks have such hard glitter particles when I swatched them that I was put off them >..< (Yes, its a huge oxymoron ^.^)

Strange, I didn’t get those hard glitter in mine. I must say its glittery shiny though which isn’t quite for everyone 🙂

I like the shade, it’s very pretty. But if it takes 3 layers to show up I think I’ll pass.

I found Moisture Extreme a bit heavy but in general, Maybelline lipsticks are great for the price.
