If you have not yet heard of these new lipsticks from Chanel, where have you been?! 😛 The blogging world has been absolutely saturated with rave reviews after reviews of the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine lipsticks – lipsticks with the texture of a lipbalm. Naturally, being influenced by blogs, I couldn’t wait for these to launch here which they did in April.
I must say that I’m underwhelmed. Sacrilege I know.
I am an island of feeling its just a bit alright, in the sea of raves and thrillings about how wonderful this lipstick range is and how everyone has multiples of them. I have just one – No. 60 Antigone – and I think I might just end up with just one.
I cannot fault the texture of the Rouge Coco Shine. It is sublime.
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine No. 60 Antigone
It applies very smoothly and it slips on your lips with sheer colour and feels just like a lipbalm on. It isn’t drying unlike the Rouge Coco range which can be a little drying on the lips, and it does not feel heavy. Colour wise is where I think my desire halted.
I stood at the Chanel counter and swatched about 20 shades of Rouge Coco Shine. I turned to my friend, held out my hand and got this response “They all look the same”. I must say I had to agree. Granted, there were subtle tonal differences – a little redder, a little more coral, a little rosier – but ultimately, they did look very similar. Sheer tints of colour.
I picked up No. 60 Antigone – not a red as many would believe, but a berry that looks intense and quite pretty in the tube, but swatches on my lips a sheer rosy berry tone that, I’ll be honest, wasn’t very special.

I’m not saying its not pretty. It is, and its very wearable plus I love sheer lipsticks. But it just did not wow me. I will say however that if you are new to wearing lipstick and want something light, not drying, not too intense and not too bright, take a look at the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine range – there will definitely be one there to suit you 🙂
Pros: Sheer and smooth texture, Not drying, Lightweight on lips, Can be layered without looking thick and heavy
Cons: Pricey, Colours look similar
I noted how similar the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine lipsticks were to the new Dior Addict lipsticks and I am going to say here that I prefer the Dior Addict range, because the colours are more varied and more intense while remaining sheer in texture. I will run a side by side comparison one of these days – it so happens that I picked up 2 similar shades 😛
Are you a Chanel Rouge Coco Shine fan? Do you own one of these or perhaps you own more than one? 🙂 Incidentally, I picked this up with some birthday gift vouchers from friends (thank you girls!) so I just paid RM10 and really, I guess I should have absolutely nothing to complain about! 😛

This summer we have Guerlain Rouge Automatique, Dior Addict and Chanel Rouge Coco Shine.
For ease of use, I’ll go for Chanel.
For brand loyalty, I’ll go for Chanel.
For an all rounder, I’ll go for Dior.
For the texture or for the sake of it, I’ll go for Guerlain.
So, which one should I get? :/
ParisB says
Erm… one of each? 😛 In terms of colour intensity, its Dior, Guerlain then Chanel in descending order. In terms of slip and shine, its Chanel, Guerlain and then Dior.

I LOVE THESE!!! You should know by now that I’m a huge fan 🙂 I agree with the colour selection though, they are all a little similar but since I mostly use these kind of shades anyway, they are absolutely perfect for me. I haven’t checked out the new Dior Addict yet.
ParisB says
Yup! Realized you’re a huge fan of these hehe… I was rather taken by the orangey ones – those were interesting!

I was soooo built up by the hype for the Rouge Coco Shines a few weeks before, but due to the overhaul of work I had to do, I totally forgot about them! 🙁
I really didn’t expect that they’d look pretty much the same though. And due to a recent purchase of heels (the soles of my old ones came undone), I’m back on retail rehab.
Antigone looks beautiful on you! Le sigh! Everything looks good on you ahaha!
ParisB says
Well the Rouge Coco Shine is permanent (I think) so there’s loads of time to save up for it, if you’re interested 🙂 And thank you – I did like how Antigone looked too 🙂

Like Lyn, I’m a huge fan of Rouge Coco Shine too – and I love classic colours so this range seems perfect for my taste.
I did check out Dior Addict and thought they were lovely too (surprising breadth of colours!), but for some reason they came off feeling rather sticky on me 🙁 Also, I hate to say this, but I found that Dior Addict’s packaging came off rather flimsy and kitschy in the wake of Chanel’s gorgeous black and gold one!

I do tend to agree that the Dior Addict lippies are a tad “stickier” which might also have to do with their lasting longer on the lips 🙂 Bit of trade offs there. But I think what I like the most is that Dior Addict lippes aren’t scented but Chanel’s are. A very light scent but one that bugs me a little anyways. Still, yes I have to agree that the Chanel packaging trumps Dior and then some

I thought of treating myself to one, but when I swatched them, I knew they wouldn’t show up on my pigmented lips. Plus, I can get two Lavshuca lipsticks for the same price or less with an equally nice texture.

I have to agree. For light sheer moisturizing lipsticks, I much prefer looking at the Japanese brands. They have been doing it for years and they have gotten it down to a science! Western brands are only just playing catch up 🙂

I love Rouge Coco Shine! I’ve Boy, Aventure and Liberte. I’m thinking of getting Monte Carlo next Tuesday when I’m at the airport duty-free. There’s no way I’m paying Chanel cosmetics in retail here… They’re 2x more expensive than anywhere else!
ParisB says
Gosh does Boy show up on you at all? It was nothing on the back of my hand and I didn’t want to just pay for an expensive lipbalm 😛
Amanda says
When I first swatched it on my hand, I was skeptical. But I’m glad it shows up on me. I’ve very pigmented lips which I hate a lot *lol*
ParisB says
Hmm… I have pigmented lips too – maybe I should give Boy a chance? 😉

I would say I am a Chanel Rouge Coco Shine fan. As of now I own 4. I haven’t tried the new Dior Addicts but the two I tried ages ago were disappointing.
ParisB says
The main complaint I had about the old Dior Addict lipsticks were the scent. But now they’ve gotten rid of the scent, which is great and the texture is much better too 🙂 I guess much depends on lipstick preferences and you have 4 Rouge Coco shine! wow! 🙂
