Your Say: Do you apply lipbalm everyday?

April 12, 2011 Paris B 87 Comments

I had a case of dry lip the other day at the office, and while rummaging through my makeup pouch, realized I had no lipbalm on me. I should not have been surprised really. I hardly ever use lipbalm but I used to have a stick kept in there for emergencies.

burts bees lipbalm - do you use lipbalm everyday?
  • Save

I eventually made do with a Dior Serum de Rouge lipstick (helped remoisten lips – amazing stuff!) and I could not help sharing that observation on the MWS Facebook page.

A reader then asked if I used lipbalm everyday to which my answer was no.

I probably belong in the minority but my use of lipbalm or any lip treatment is only at night before bed. That’s when I slather on Lucas’ Papaw Ointment or a lipbalm like MyLipStuff to protect my lips from the drying effects of the air-conditioner.

In the day, I don’t have balm on. I know tinted lipbalm is quite the rage, but I have this thing against tinted lipbalm. When I used to use tinted lipbalm (I loved the one from LipIce) I found that I’d have to reapply and with every layer you put on, the colour gets brighter and brighter and it was always an unattractive fuchsia. Since then, I’ve steered clear of tinted balms. Not to say I won’t try them. They just aren’t a preference.

I don’t even use balm under my lipsticks, or if I do, its rarely. If its a drying lipstick, I just don’t use it. Its just one of those things that are a personal preference.

Your say: Do you apply lipbalm everyday? And if you do, what’s your lipbalm of choice?

If I’ve had a particularly big night, I slather on balm like mad before I go to bed (and not to mention drink a gallon of water). And I always have a balm in the car or at work on hand. So, yes, I use it everyday. Ever since Bee gave me Stage Wonderbalm, I’m hooked on that stuff. It’s colourless and it’s emollient enough. It’s so hard to get them around here so I found a great dupe: Nivea one. I keep that in the car, one at work and one by my bedside table. 😛

I do tend to apply a balm before bed because of the air conditioning. Oh and when i’m overseas in dry weather but not otherwise 🙂 I just tossed out the remnants of my Stage Wonderbalm last week – turned bad 🙁

I try to apply every night before bed… the emphasis being on “TRY TO”! Hehehe!! 😀 It does help if im using a super yummy flavoured one though! 😛

How do you find the Burts Bees one in your picture above? I loved it but i find that it stings if i apply it over chapped lips 🙁

I find it just okay actually. Nothing super special 😛 I don’t like using flavoured lipbalm and at night, if I do, I have this paranoid I’d be attacked by ants! 😛

I can’t live without my lipbalm. My lips are extremely prone to dryness and cracking (and bleeding on occasion, which is not only painful but oh-so-attractive), so I am quite religious about applying and reapplying throughout the day!

I’ve leaped from balm to balm a lot over the years, but my current favourite is an oldie but goodie – Vaseline Lip Therapy (cherry flavoured). It does the job, is light on the lips, costs next to nothing, and the cherry doesn’t taste like cough syrup – always a big win in my books 🙂

I also find that using Vaseline straight from the pot works wonders too, especially when slathered on before going to bed… the happy, rosy, ultra-soft lips the next day are marvelous 🙂

My lips are very dry and chappy…Seems like none of the lipbalm I use does helps. So in the end, I gave up using them. But I do ‘try’ to use it occasionally. 🙂

Confession? I’m a balmaholic. I counted and I have at least 20 lipbalms and I still have the urge to buy more when I shop. ^^; But I agree, it’s a matter of personal preference as I’m not as keen on lipsticks; not yet anyways. ;P

There is no way under the sun I can go a day without lip balm. Sebamed lip balm for the day (under lippie) and Kiehl’s lip balm (which works as a treatment) for the night.

yes! i don’t like the feel of dry lips ever since i found out about the miracle of lipbalms 😀
at night before going to bed i would apply The Body Shop Cocoa Butter Lip Care Stick (I always change this but I like all the lipbalm sticks from TBS). and during the days whether under lipstick or not, I use Estee Lauder Lip Conditioner SPF15 (great stuff, but really pricey for just a lipbalm 🙁 )
And I heard raves about Jack Black’s Intense Therapy Lipbalm SPF25, and being Cristine from Temptalia and Leesha’s (xsparkage from YouTube) fave lipbalm. Only thing is it’s unavailable in Malaysia. But it’s only $7.50 from Sephora USA

I have this OCD thing going with lipbalms. 🙂 I apply lipbalm minimum of 6 times a day and lipbalm at night is a must. The moment I feel my lips lose the moisture from the lipbalms I have worn, I must immediately slather a new one on. Right now, I can count 4 lipbalms in my purse, 2 on my work desk and another 4 scattered everywhere in the drawers of my desk. A few fave’s gotta be Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm, Korres Guava Lip Butter, MAC Lip Conditioner, Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream and Fresh Sugar Rose Lip Treatment.

In the day, if I want a bit of colour to my lips, I just put on MAC Tinted Lip Conditioner or Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm. Both wears well, gives a nice healthy dose of colour to my otherwise dead lips and also injects quite a bit of moisture to my lips.

Ooh I had a MAC Tinted Lip Conditioner once! 😀 It was the one in a tube and I liked the light vanilla scent. Gave a nice colour to the lips too. I’ve heard the Dior Addict Lip Glow is nice too but thank goodness I’m not going there hehe… I used to use Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream for my hands. Perfect in cold dry weather 😀

All the time. My lips get terribly dried out in air-conditioned environments and my office is like a freezer. I try to use lipbalms with SPF. My old fave used to be Ego lipbalm (which we can’t get here *grumbles*) so have switched to Sebamed. Fairly decent and at least I am not allergic to it.

Yes – most of the time. I’ve been using plain ol’ LipIce (with SPF) for years for during the day as it works for me. Remembering to reapply after food or drink is another matter 😛

At night I use the non-SPF ones before bed.

I do… when my lips are acting up. I apply the Burt’s Bees Medicated lipbalm and if my lips are cracked and dry, the tingling sensations become stinging sensations for a good while! BUT, it does help my lips get better, so yeah.

Strangely, I find the lipsticks I use are all very, er, moisturizing. But if I still want color and have misbehaving lips, I’ll go for the Burt’s Bees lip shimmers. They work and have a bit of color! Yay!

By now, I am hooked to Vaseline (the blue cap pot), i always slap it on before i sleep and tadaaa~~ my lips are good and fresh the following day *winks*. I always put it in my bag too for daily uses. And its DARN cheap :p

I’ve turned to the original Vaseline for my lips too if I have nothing else on hand. Else I just use Lucas because its convenient. But now I’m nearly finished with my tube I’m not sure if I will repurchase.

Only during these 2 occasion, my Protecting Vitamin Lipsaver by Molton Brown comes in handy. I use to love Carmex lipbalm but not anymore.

    Daytime:
Maybelline Tinted Lipbalm with SPF 16 in Dolly Rose
Just enough to inject a little bit of color to my lips, got SPF, moisturizing, non-irritating (I have sensitive lips).

    Bedtime:
    Lucas Papaw Ointment
Actually I use it in the morning too, before I layer it with Maybelline Lipbalm. But at night I like to have thicker layer.

    🙂

I use Lucas Papaw at night too for lovely soft lips the next morning. But what I’m starting to dislike is having the ointment melt. Perhaps its too hot here, but in the evenings, when I squeeze out the ointment, I get a very runny liquid. Not sure if you get it the same way. But if I leave it for a while in the air conditioning, it returns to the ointment texture.

ooh yeah! I experienced that messy melted ointment too! Now I leave it in the fridge during daytime, no more accident. 😀 I run the aircond during bedtime so as you mention, its back to the normal texture.

I don’t put lipbalm on everyday, only when it feels dry. I think if you put it on everyday it will make your lips feel dry when you stop using lipbalm. When that happens, you’re stuck with using lipbalm everyday. 😀

Kaz is right – a lot of these balms contain petrochemicals, particularly Lucas paw paw and Vaseline. In the short term, they seem moisturising as they lock in moisture, but long term they dry out your lips and you become “addicted” to them, and they stop working. In you want to read more, Google “petroleum in lipbalm”. Instead of Lucas, I use Suvana organic paw paw lip balm, which in petroleum-free. And yes Paris, it does get very runny and not nice to use in warm weather!

Yes, I apply lipbalm everyday, especially before going to bed. But only one brand & range works for me Blistex Med Plus. Not waxy, leaves a tingling feeling & keeps my lips moisturised. In my younger days I had very dry and undefined lips, always need to draw with a lip pencil before applying lipstick. No shape 🙁 But since I’ve been applying this balm picked up the habit when we were living in Europe, (dry lips in winter = painful) my Mom and friends said that my lips look more defined. Also acts like a barrier from getting coldsores or recover from them and whatever virus that is easily transmitted on lips especially during cold months. Unfortunately, although we do get Blistex here, but not this range so I usually stock up when I’m back in Europe. It’s in a blue plastic pot, which I don’t really mind as I can always see how much is left.

I must agree that in cold dry climates with low humidity, I do have to use lipbalm everyday or even during the day to avoid cold sores or dry lips. Its just here in the tropics that I don’t 🙂

I used to do it everyday while I was living in London, it was painful not to. Now back home, I still always have one in the handbag but definitely not applying everyday, especially when I wear a lipstick. I just prep my lips with those, my lips have pretty significant fine lines you know *shrug*

I used to have a few Burts Bee! Love their honey flavour one! I have a few scattered around, Pai’s bergamot lip balm and L’Occitane shea butter in the handbag, Suqqu next to my bed to remind me I have to slap on before I go to sleep!

        Hey Paris,
Yes it’s like on par with CdP of Shiseido (I was so tempted to get the loose powder that other day, 320 MYR, are you kidding me?)…
I will bring the…ahem, £168 powder brush with me this Sat…you will understand why the hell it is soooooooo expensive!
The massage cream is the most coveted item from them, in general, they have above average stuff, I particularly love their skincare and foundation/base line. Their makeup brushes are awesome, I am planning to get more (bit by bit)…
If you have to buy only one thing, buy the massage cream!
