Your Say: Will you share your makeup?

March 15, 2011 Paris B 38 Comments

What do you say? Will you share your makeup?

I won’t. Not out of selfish reasons but for hygiene reasons. There are exceptions of course.

would you share your makeup?

I will share powder products e.g. powder eyeshadows, powders and blushes. I will also share anything that can be pumped out or squeezed out e.g. primers, liquid foundations etc.

I will not share any products that I apply directly to my skin, or which I cannot easily clean and sanitize e.g. lipsticks, mascara, lipgloss, concealers with brush applicators etc.

Bacteria multiplies faster in a wet medium as opposed to a dry medium, hence my concern. Also, sharing lipsticks, lipglosses and mascara can spread germs and bacteria. If you wonder why you get a cold sore or eye infections from testing lipsticks at makeup counters, this could very well be a reason.

Oh and I don’t use makeup testers directly on my face for this reason too, which is also why I don’t go for makeovers. Where possible, I try not to use the lipstick and lipglosses and mascara (unless they use a disposable spoolie) and even eyeliners. Basically, anything that goes too near my lips or eyes doesn’t get shared.

So err… yeah. Next time you want to borrow my makeup, it’ll just be the powder products you’ll get 🙂

Your say: Will you share your makeup?

No way. I wouldn’t even share powder stuff unless it’s someone I’m very close to or someone I know very well. Stuff like cold sores, once you get it, you’re stuck with the virus 😛

Same here. I won’t mind sharing with my sister knowing our (un)hygiene habits. 🙂

Usually for powder products, if I’m giving them away, I brush or scrape off the top layer. But I rarely if ever give away cream products unless they come in a pump jar or squeeze tube

I only share my makeup with my close friends with condition that most makeups applications are used by brushes such as blushers, powders and eyeshadows. Even with lipstick I’ll use lip liner so I can wash them off for hygenie purposes.
Sometimes I see people Watson using the lipstick tester on their lips…eww…
I feel very unhygenic and I don’t dare to swatch them on my hand too…

Ooh I’ve seen it at the pharmacies too! People use lipsticks, glosses and mascara straight on their lips or eyes. Makes me shudder every time and nope. I don’t go near those products then. I usually reject mascara and lip products at make overs too, unless I really want to try the lipstick. And even then, I watch how they apply. If they pick colour straight from the tube, I pass. If they scrape off onto a spatula and apply from there, its not as bad.

Actually, I had my friend come over to play with my makeup a few weeks ago. I made sure she used her own brushes for anything she used and yeah… Even washed some of my own for her use. And after that, I washed every brush we used. ^.^

Its quite interesting reading through everyone’s replies. I guess I’m a little more relaxed in that I don’t wash my brushes etc after everyone’s done playing, but I do wipe down the surfaces of the makeup. That said, it rarely happens and I never share lipsticks 🙂

Only with my sisters, and how to you tell people nicely that you really don’t want to lend them your makeup? Got caught in a few situation where I was really really reluctant and did not know what to do but to lend.

Just say no, you don’t share lipstick… and smile. That’s what I do anyway 🙂 People should understand that you don’t want to share your lipstick with them because its just not hygienic.

I won’t! I’m horribly anal about keeping my makeup clean and germ free! 😛

I had a stupid friend who swiped her finger across the surface my beloved NARS Deep Throat blush one! How so very annoying! Ick!! >.<

Eeps! Thats not nice of your friend but some people who aren’t quite as anal about their makeup as many of us are, don’t care. Still, its rude to swipe without permission.

I don’t like sharing my makeup…..I’m very annoying hygienic person… my officemate once swatched with their fingers on my blusher!! which i’m still on mesmerizing moment mode…. -slap head- I have to dust the upper layer with my brush and double clean the brush…which is kinda a waste. However I do makeup my sisters occasionally using my private collection… but in the end of the day i still was my brushes…. =p

Aiks! People who swatch without first checking if its ok with me, or if they can really get my goat. I mean if you ask, and I say go ahead, then that’s alright by me, but not asking is a taboo in my book!

Fortunately, the people who are most likely to filch my makeup have different colour tones than I, so they find my collection of browns & neutral boring. I hide my smoky greys & blacks though just in case. But I do tend to bring an extra lip balm, coz’ I end up giving one away anyway. Don’t you just hate it when someone borrows your stuff & say that she likes it so much that she’ll get the same one herself, but she doesn’t? This happens everytime I go out with this particular person, I know I won’t be using that lip balm after she’s used it, so I let her keep it. Luckily this is only twice a year excursion. The funny thing I can only buy this particular balm where she’s from!

If only, still expect something for birthday & Sinterklaas (5 December)! But I give away the old stock, (I usually buy 6 or more to bring back here) then I can buy the new stock (sometimes they change the packaging) when I’m back there 🙂

It depends on the product. I would never share mascara and liquid eyeliners with anyone for hygienic reasons. As for other products, I sometimes let my friends or my mum play with them but only if I’m present so that I can sanitize them and keep them germ free.

I do the same, Paris – only powdered products.
But it kinda depends who I share with as well – depending on their skin condition?
I sound really bad but how do I share makeup with one who say has acne and I don’t? Won’t there be bacteria and such? I dunno. 🙁

I do share other stuff like lipsticks/gloss with my mother.
I wipe it clean first tho’. 🙂

I don’t think acne is catching, but other skin conditions might be. If they want to share, you can tell them to use their own brushes or sponges or disposable ones so the product isn’t too contaminated. Or just share liquid foundations etc that can be pumped out 🙂
