Your favourite (and not so favourite) Beauty Items in 2010

December 29, 2010 Paris B 49 Comments

During the weekend, I asked you for your favourite non-beauty item in 2010 and I was so amused to see that we have so many gadget geeks among us. Gadget geeks unite! 😀

Anyway with each day, we’re slowly but surely heading to the close of 2010 and a new year of 2011, so I thought it might be fun for us to share our faves and duds of the year in terms of beauty products, this time 😉

a few of my fave things in 2010

Like every year, 2010 saw a slew of new products head our way. Some of us took the plunge and tried the new items, some of us didn’t, preferring to stick to the tried and true. Some of us rediscovered old favourites in the process and some of us discovered pure lumps of coal. Duds. They are the bane of trying anything new.

Would you want to share your favourite and not so favourite beauty products of 2010 with us? 🙂

I’ll start and you can just follow on in the comments 😀

1. Favourite and not so favourite blush

This is a hard one for me. But I think the blush I reached for the most in 2010 is Benefit Sugarbomb for an effortless glow every time. For me to say I dislike a blush is sacrilege, but the one I tried but did not quite like is the Smashbox cream blush duo for Summer which I subsequently gave to a friend. I realized I didn’t feature many blushes this year. Gotta remedy that in 2011! 😉

sugarbomb my fave blush

2. Favourite and not so favourite lipstick/lipgloss

My favourite lipstick/gloss in 2010 is the Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothie in Berry Boost. I’ve finished mine and that almost NEVER happens! The one I found harder to wear daily is the Shiseido Perfect Rouge Glowing Matte which after a few uses, I find a little too dry going on the lips. Nothing a bit of balm can’t solve but as I dislike balm, it stayed on the backburner somewhat.

3. Favourite and not so favourite facial cleanser

My favourite is far and away the Hada Labo Gokujyun Super Hyaluronic Face Wash. Its inexpensive and does a good job of cleansing without drying. Not a favourite at all is the Baviphat Two Times Cleansing Oil that smells of petrol!

4. Favourite and not so favourite facial serum

I’m torn between the Dior One Essential (for lines) and the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair or Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate (both for general maintenance) and the Clinique Derma White Clinical Brightening Essence (whitening/brightening) I can’t choose 😛 Not so favourite is sadly the Dior DNA Reverse Night Serum and White Reveal Spot Eraser that did nothing for me 🙁 Oh and the Skinz Infinite Eye Revive Therapy too. Boo!

5. Favourite and not so favourite facial moisturiser

I did not find a favourite this year. I do like the Strivectin Instant Moisture Repair Daily Hydrator but in the main, I wasn’t wow-ed by any one product. Similarly, nothing was a real dud either but if I had to choose, I was not wow-ed by the Clarins White Plus HP line.

6. Favourite and not so favourite sunscreen/sunblock

A favourite sunscreen/sunblock isn’t an easy choice between Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily Defence and Biotherm UV Supra D-tox sunscreens so as I’m still using both, I’d stick with these two. A clear dud was the ROC Minesol Triple Defense Very High Protection sunscreen that broke me out so badly I gave it away. I hope the recipient didn’t break out from this!

7. Favourite and not so favourite foundation (liquid or powder)

2010 was a year of liquid foundation for me but my fave is still the Diorskin Nude Natural Glow from last year. If I had to choose one from this year it would be the Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation by a mile! A dud? Lancome Teint Miracle did not work for me and I badly wanted it to! For powder, Revlon Beyond Natural and I Nuovi FaceFix were winners in my book.

8. Favourite and not so favourite mascara

I found a winner in the Shiseido Defining Volume Perfect Mascara, as I told you so that is a no-brainer pick for me. And Diorshow Extase mascara hit the blind spot so that was again an easy pick!

You’d notice I left out eyeshadow. I couldn’t pick just one to like because I’m really finicky with eyeshadow but if you do have a favourite, do please share!

So come on, share your faves and duds with us in the comments – we might all find a fave and/or dud in there too! 😉 Just copy the 8 categories below and append your answers in the comments, whichever is applicable. It doesn’t have to be a new item in 2010, just whichever was your favourite, even if its an oldie and goodie!

1. Favourite and not so favourite blush
2. Favourite and not so favourite lipstick/lipgloss
3. Favourite and not so favourite facial cleanser
4. Favourite and not so favourite facial serum
5. Favourite and not so favourite facial moisturiser
6. Favourite and not so favourite sunscreen/sunblock
7. Favourite and not so favourite foundation (liquid or powder)
8. Favourite and not so favourite mascara

Ready, set… put on your thinking caps and go! 😀

Doesn’t Torrid go really pigmented on your pale complexion? I think Torrid and Gilda bring out the redness of my cheeks 🙁 Yeah I have been using DNA for a few months now and my spots are still as dark!

Actually no. I use Torrid with quite a light hand. In fact, everyone complains about Orgasm being pigmented and I find I use at least 2 layers to get it to show properly but I risk looking like someone slapped me. Hard. >.< I agree with you about DNA. Didn't even do anything for my skin.

    1. Favourite and not so favourite blush
I have only 3 blushes in my collection and I’m ok with them all. Ever so tempted to buy more but when I think about how long I have to go in finishing them I trash the buying impulse.

    2. Favourite and not so favourite lipstick/lipgloss
Clinique Color Surge Buttershine (love the colour, texture, scent, and reasonable price); Bonjour rouge clubbing (colour too light to show much, too much glitter, not moisturising enough).

    3. Favourite and not so favourite facial cleanser
Himalayas Gentle Washing Cream; Hada Labo Tamagohada AHA/BHA cleanser (gave me little red bumps)

    4. Favourite and not so favourite facial serum
No fave; Hada Labo SHA lotion gave me little bumps too. (sigh, really wanted to like it after trying the sample but the bumps come after 3 days)

    5. Favourite and not so favourite facial moisturiser
No fave; Garnier Whitening SPF15 day moisturizer (sticky, yuck!)

    6. Favourite and not so favourite sunscreen/sunblock
La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF50 in fluid extreme and lotion; none non-fave.

    7. Favourite and not so favourite foundation (liquid or powder)
ZA two-way foundation; Innisfree Fresh BB sunblock balm (BB cream: white cast with flash photography)

    8. Favourite and not so favourite mascara
Charming-Angel (dirt cheap but lengthens well), Sguard Rock (lengthening and slightly volumising but dries out fast and exp without discount), Maybelline Magnum Volum express! (volumising, HOLDS CURL, smudge proof, and EASY TO REMOVE)

And to add on one more category:
    9. Favourite and not so favourite eyeliner
Elianto Stay On Eyeliner Pencil (1st pencil that didnt smudge on my oily lids, only fades or disappears after some time, glides smoothly, v affordable) and Etude House Code B gel liner (super pigmented, very lasting, affordable); Elianto Stay On Eyeliner PEN (horrible! smudges after two hours even in aircon!)

You know what? I think you might be one of those few who might be sensitive to hyaluronic acid too. We’ve had some readers report bumps on their skin when they use the Hada Labo products. I’ve heard a lot about ZA foundation. Maybe I should try it the next time I see it on sale 😉

It should be on sale now cos Watsons usually holds a post-xmas sale. I’m using the one in blue casing but recently I’ve seen fewer of them around in Watsons, wonder if ZA is discontinuing. The whitening one (white casing) is still around though. It is said that the blue one has more oil control while the white one has more coverage but I’ve nver verified it. I’ve tried a sample of the Skin Beauty one (in pink casing) but that gave me break outs.

    1. Favourite and not so favourite blush
Coffret D’or IC Loose Powder Blush (PK-25) & Nars Exhibit A ; Gransenbon blushes (too much shimmers; too little pigment)

    2. Favourite and not so favourite lipstick/lipgloss
I’ve got four fav i can’t do without (don’t make me choose):
    Fran Wilson Moodmatcher (orange)
    Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick
    Chanel Rouge Allure Laque (Ming)
    Urban Decay Lip Junkie (Naked)
    2 Not so Fav:
    Revlon (070 Soft Nude) ;
Tony Moly Milky Tint (peach) (taste horrible but look good)

    3. Favourite and not so favourite facial cleanser
DHC cleansing oil and Ah Yuan Soap; NIL

    4. Favourite and not so favourite facial serum
I’ve got three fav and nil not so fav:
Organic Pharmacy Antioxidant Face Firming Serum (for an instant boost)
    Intelligent Nutrients Organic Anti-Aging Serum
Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate (was on my not so fav list initially but slowly i’m getting to like it as it’s quite mild and doesn’t break me out)

    5. Favourite and not so favourite facial moisturiser
Organic Pharmacy Double Rose Rejuvenating Face Cream & Shiseido Aqualabel Aqua Enhancer MO ; Shiseido Aqua Label Moisture Emulsion S (if used for a few days running, it gives me cystic breakouts)

    6. Favourite and not so favourite sunscreen/sunblock
NIL ( i don’t use sunscreen even though it is deemed an important step in skincare. My excuse is that i try to have some SPF protection included into my choice of makeup)

    7. Favourite and not so favourite foundation (liquid or powder)
Dr Wu Perfect Cover BB cream (it’s a real gem for my skin as it controls oil, last whole day, doesnt breakout my skin or clog my pores as like some other bb creams i’ve tried and can’t bring myself to rave about in the past, gives very natural and good coverage, matches my skintone NC-20 and it’s non-greasy, non-drying!
I’m one foundation junkie but i can’t really put a finger to a not so favourite foundation this year. I’m happy with most of my buys for this year but the above just stands out the most in term of overall performance.

    8. Favourite and not so favourite mascara
I’m not a mascara person (bought only two mascara in the entire year) but I do like Ettusais’s mascara for the past two years which comes with a unique dual comb applicator.

    9. Favourite Eye shadow palatte
Urban decay Naked palatte (my best neutral palatte to date, easy to use and great for my many lazy days)
Lunasol eye palattes (just can’t fail for a easy to achieve chic look if one loves the unique shimmers like me)

    10. One last favourite to close the chapter before 2011 comes along:
LOREAL HIP Cream Shadow Paint – STEELY 909

I was just looking at that Coffret D’or loose powder recently! I had the T’estimo loose powder blush from a while ago but I didn’t like it. I wonder if its similar. And I agree with you about Gransenbon. I have one and I hardly ever use it because its so shimmery.

Yay for including the UD Naked palette! You’re absolutely right about how easy it is to use and how fuss free too! I also like Lunasol eye palettes 😀 I haven’t been paying much attention to them, but I do agree that its so easy to get a polished look with their eye palettes compared to others. (and its somehow less easy to make mistakes too!)

    Additional fave item!!
Baviphat’s fruit masks!! I’ve tried the lemon brightening sleeping mask and it was GREAT! I didn’t really see any lightening of my scars but it made my skin feel very soft and supple… PLUS that tiny tub (10g) lasts a loooong time! It’s almost 2 weeks and I still haven’t finished it yet!! Cheap and it’s good!

Oh I’ve been neglecting my I Nuovi blushes! Thanks for the reminder – they certainly are good stuff! I haven’t tried the Baviphat masks but many people seem to like them. I know they are quite inexpensive so I suppose I could pick one up the next time I’m around the counters to see if I like them too 😀

Thanks for sharing! I haven’t tried that Hada Labo moisturizer but so many people have complained about how sticky it is, so I’m glad you like it.

Those MAC Mineralize blushes are quite hit or miss aren’t they? I kept looking at them but never bought them because they were just so shimmery. And I love how loyal you are to your skincare!

    1. Favourite blush
MAC’s MSF in Petticoat – My first product from MAC and it’s just the right colour for me coz I tend to blush easily. I can’t wear blushes well though.
    2. Favourite lipstick/lipgloss
Fav : NYX RLS in Honey – Just the exact right colour for a nude lip look at. Fav Lipgloss would be H20+ Lip Oasis Lip treatment. So good for dry lips and underneath matte lipstick coz I have like super dry lips…
    3. Favourite and not so favourite facial cleanser
Fav : H20+ Green Tea Urban Defense Facial Cleansing Milk – First time using it and thought that it would be too creamy or oily for my t-zone but it works great and surprisingly it balance my combination skin.
Not so fav : Foam cleanser especially the ones in tubes from Skinfood. Don’t like the squeeky clean waxy feel on the skin after wash.
    4. Favourite facial serum
H20+ Green Tea Antioxidant Serum – It works really well. Lightweight and absorbs fast. Best thing that I like abt it is you apply this daytime to protect your skin from harsh environmental pollution.
    5. Favourite and not so favourite facial moisturiser
Fav : H20+ Sea Results Line Mender & Sea Results Deep Sleep Recovery Cream – Surprisingly I love them both especially the Line Mender. It’s for anti-aging and it’s so good especially for the neck. It’s not oily at all and you can really feel refreshed the next morning and your skin really looks good.
    6. Favourite and not so favourite sunscreen/sunblock
Fav : Sun Shades SPF50+ from Melaleuca – This is the only suncreen lotion that I can actually use. Yes after hunting for years and throwing so many those available out there. Surprisingly with so high SPF it’s not oily at all and it absorbs really fast. Best thing is after applying on my face it does not go into suffocation mode and get all oily! Yes I have problems with suncreen or sunblock I’d rather go out without them. It’s as if after applying, my skin is telling me it cannot breathe. Maybe I’m too sensitive 🙁
I don’t wear foundation but I think I will try Utena, the tinted milk lotion bcoz after testing it it feels really light. I can’t wear mascara at all.

i’m a new follower of your blog (just started this year) and i’ve already found a few favourites by reading your reviews here. Am not really big on cosmestics and beauty product (yet!) but am really loving my Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothie – the best lipgloss thus far and Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate Serum. I’ve also just started out trying Hada Labo’s Gokujyun Super Hyaluronic Face Wash and so far so good!

So thanks for posting up your reviews on the various products. It’s certainly helpful for people like me (who’s just starting to get their foot through the door) 🙂

Last fav product and is now on the top of my list: Vichy BB cream – i’ve been using it for more than a week and it makes my skin glow! like that it is very light and is easily spread and blends into skin naturally.. non-fav: L’oreal mineral powder – yucky!
    8. Favourite and not so favourite mascara
Fav: Fasio hyper-stay mascara magna-plus curl volume – this really surprises me.. for the price, its working better than the branded ones that i’ve used! non-fav: Majolica Majorca volume mascara – over-rated!
    9. Favourite eyebrow pencil: Shu uemura hard formula pencil in hard 9 – can produce the most natural brows i thought i wouldnt had!
    10. Favourite concealer: Smashbox high definition concealer in Light – light coverage but this shade suits me to a T! Benefit industrial cream concealer – better coverage but cakes up after half a morning.

I think I’ll share a favourite blush this time, and that would be TheBalm’s Down Boy, gifted by Syen and Kahani. I reached for it so much, it’s caused some serious dents in the compact powder 😉

Not so favourite would still be the Nars Orgasm. Barely touched it 😛
