I ran a poll on Facebook and Twitter asking if you’d prefer to read about my Sasa.com saga or my Kao Liese Bubble Hair Color experience. Clearly Liese won 🙂
Its been a while since I said I’d colour my hair with the Liese Bubble Hair Colour chosen by majority. The colour chosen by majority vote was Mocha Orange – a colour I was a little concerned with because i wasn’t sure if it would be too warm or, horrors! Turn out orange like on the box!
Before I tell you how this experiment went, let me tell you about my one and only home hair colour experience many years ago. The intention was to colour my hair black. My old hair colour was a light blond brown and i wanted to go back to my natural color without going back to the salon and paying a mint. I bought a box of color and with my mom’s help got down to business. Long and short of it is that I ended up with purple black splotches on my face and back of my neck and a headful of colour that kept staining my towels and pillow case. I never coloured my hair at home again.
Until last weekend when i found myself free to do it. So Kao Liese Bubble Hair colour in hand I got down to business.
The box gives you everything you need – 1. colour, 2. activator, 3. nozzle, 4. rubber gloves and 5. leave in lotion.
The box we get here gives you the full instructions in English but if your box only shows Japanese writing you can’t read, here’s how to do it.
- Pour the small bottle of colour into the big bottle. Cover it and turn the bottle up and down about 2-3 times. Do not shake it just upturn it to mix it up.
- Remove the cap and fix the pink nozzle on.
- Wear the rubber gloves, head to the bathroom and get started!
- Squeeze the body of the bottle and the nozzle will squirt out foam or mousse. Apply this on DRY hair. Repeat till all your hair is covered.
- Once all your hair is covered with foam, massage in the foam to the roots and throughout your head. This is to ensure you have even color. As you massage it in you might notice that it foams up a bit more – for me anyway, rather like how it is when you shampoo your hair.
- Leave it for about 20-30 minutes. I left it for 30 minutes and then rinsed it out and shampooed. The box has a sachet of leave in hair treatment to help your hair stay soft.
For my short hair I used only slightly more than half a bottle. Bit of a waste really.
How did it feel?
Point to note: the colour mixture has a strong ammonia smell. Pretty much like what it smells like in the hair salon. Also when I had the colour on, my scalp felt tingly and sensitive. I get that way too at the hair salon. Perhaps its my skin but its a point to note. The smell doesn’t last (thank goodness!) although I caught whiffs of it the following morning and for days thereafter whenever I wash my hair. Pretty much like how it is when you colour your hair in a salon. I don’t like that.
When I washed out the colour, and in the following days when I shampoo my hair, my hair feels a bit stiff and hard. But nothing a bit of hair mask or conditioner can’t fix. I used MoroccanOil Oil Treatment too before blowdrying and airdrying and my hair felt fine thereafter.
Colourwise, I didn’t turn into Carrot Top but to my surprise, my hair did look lighter. There are obvious warmer brown tones and a touch of orange/red. Nothing too obvious – its a home colour after all and I didn’t bleach my hair prior to applying colour.
I don’t have obvious white or grey hair (yet! Thank goodness!) so I cannot tell you if it covers white or grey hair but some readers have said that it doesn’t so you might want to take note. Also, I realized that the new colour is brighter in the sunlight and less obvious indoors. Its only been under a week so I cannot say if it fades easily yet, but I’m using a colour protect range of hair care for now.
A very honest friend told me when I upended my head, that my handiwork was not as even as I first thought. The front of my head and wherever I can see my hair is coloured pretty evenly. But the back of my head is less so especially underneath so once my hair grows I’m going to face problems 😛 So my advice is, if you can, get someone to help you with the back of your head to make sure your hair colour is even there too.
Everything considered, I’m quite happy with it because the change in hair colour is subtle yet different. I paid something like RM600 once to get hair of this colour at a salon 😛 Granted, it’d probably last longer if you get it professionally done, but hey, hair grows and I’m fickle! I’d stick to Liese for now 😉
Pros: No Dripping, Easy to use, Even colour throughout hair, Inexpensive
Cons: Ammonia smell, Scalp felt tingly, 1 box is too much for short hair
I had a box of Chestnut Brown on standby just in case something went wrong but I think I’ll hang onto this colour for a while more 🙂 From start to finish took under 1 hour which I thought wonderful!
I think I’ve gotten over my fear of home hair colour 😀 Have you tried any of the Kao Liese Bubble Hair Dye colours and do you have a good or bad experience to report? The colours aren’t quite earth shaking and home colour does not beat professional salon colouring, but I think they are subtle enough for the everyday woman and for a bit of fun 🙂
Just don’t expect your hair to look like it does on the model on the box.

Kao Liese Bubble Hair Dye retails at major pharmacies for RM38 a box and comes in 10 shades
joyce says
Looks great! I tried this brand before and it was good. How to make hair softer after color? Any advice?
ParisB says
Thank you Joyce. After colour, I use hair masks regularly and now I’m using MoroccanOil treatment which helps my hair feel and remain soft. I’ll tell you about it soon, but we can’t get it here. Perhaps find a leave in conditioner or hair treatment for dry coloured hair. It should be the same.
Kahani says
I know you have a fear of warm shades but this really suits you! It makes your fair skin look so pretty. =D
ParisB says
Thank you Kahani! I was really worried about this one hence the standby colour 😀
Hasegawa Ayane says
Yep, it doesn’t cover white hair. It even says so in fine print on the pamphlet included in the box 🙂 Also tested out on my sister and to our disappointment, it didn’t work. Lol
Nevertheless, I think the colour looks fab on you! 😀
ParisB says
Thanks! I clearly didn’t read the fine print hehe… Perhaps it just isn’t that strong which is why they claim to leave your hair softer than other home colours? Hmm…
Jessie says
It’s beautiful 🙂
ParisB says
Thank you Jessie
Aoibhealfae says
Don’t you think its a bit too orangey? I stay far far far faraway from orange tone. I’ve seen a lot people with straw hair for it.
Honestly, I dont think Liese hair colour is good for my skin tone. I like their mist though
ParisB says
Err… actually I didn’t think it too orange. Maybe its because I’ve gone quite to the extreme before this so this is really quite mild for me LOL! I usually handle reddish/orangy hair tones quite well 🙂 Which colours have you tried from Liese? This is my first and I’m curious about the pink one.
rinnah says
I would try this but I’m too chicken about making a mess at home. Haha. Much rather go to the salon and get someone else to do it for me. 😛
Nice color though! 😀
ParisB says
The beautiful part about this one? No mess. I had the foam on my head while watching tv! And I didn’t even use a towel around my shoulders etc.
Shorty says
OMG the color looks gorgeous on you! I can’t imagine one can get such results from a small box! It looks very ‘salon’ … I’m definitely gonna try this cos I just spent almost RM500 on a perm job so I’m reluctant to spend a few more hundred on a color job soon after. This is a timely post cos I’ve been curious about this product but too chicken to try it. Thank you thank you PB! *muaks*
ParisB says
Thanks Shorty! If you just got a perm, better wait a bit before you introduce colour. Too much chemicals in the system 😀 Salon hair jobs are so expensive aren’t they? 😛
Hanny says
Pretty! But I’ll think I’ll visit the salon for me first dye ^.^
ParisB says
Thank you Hanny and yes if you plan to colour your hair, the salon will do a much better job than you can ever do at home. Plus your colour comes out looking brighter and lasts longer too! Just a bit of advice. Don’t go the way of red tones – they fade quickly and beware anything too blonde – it can start looking brassy. And use a good hair mask and hair treatment often and your hair will be as soft as ever 🙂
Jenn says
Eh your hair is so shiny!! 😀 😀
Your new color looks good on you!! Glad to hear that it colors your hair evenly for you!! Mine was patchy!! Maybe because my hair is too long already! 🙁
You’re right – professionally done hair coloring is still the best! Especially after doing a certain treatment – hair is just so shiny!! Hahaha!! 😀
ParisB says
Jenn! Your hair is so long compared to mine, you probably need 2 boxes 😛 This can’t beat the pros, but it is great for a little bit of fun right? 🙂
shuaddict says
Great results! I’ve heard that the application process for this is much easier than other hair dyes as it uses the ‘bubbles’ which help it stay up + not drippy and cause less of a mess. Have to try it now!
ParisB says
Yup! I think the bubbles also help to make the colour stay more even. Its just like having shampoo in your hair for about half an hour 🙂
Connie De Alwis says
Looks pretty even in pics la. Nvm, I’ll examine tomorrow. I’ve heard both dashing and unenthusiastic reviews for this hair dye so when I totally changed my hair color, I still went back to Gatsby. lol. But ONE DAY I shall give Liese a try just to see what they hype’s all about
ParisB says
Thanks. I actually found this a little “mild” compared to the other home colour I tried. As in the colour doesn’t feel so harsh. Some of the bubble dye got onto my skin and it didn’t even stain it, even though I took a while to remove it. My previous one left a stain the minute it touched my skin. So perhaps its a bit “mild” for those wanting something more dramatic.
AnnaYJia says
That is nice ~~~ It does really gave you “what you see is what you get” eh ?
I got a soft beige last time but sadly my hair color just turned into brown color >_<
ParisB says
Perhaps the brighter colours show up better? Try pink next time 😀
AnT says
Wow Paris~ Thanks for the tip of Moroccan Oil Oil Treatment 😀 muax~
ParisB says
Do you have it? If you do, use it. Its pretty amazing stuff 😀
AnT says
Don’t have it though 😛 Will try to get it soon. So I heard a little goes a long way 😀 Thanks so much babe! 😀
ParisB says
Yes a very little goes a very long way 😉 I’ve got a review coming up… as soon as I get my butt down to it 😛 Too many people have been asking
melvel says
I love this product. Marshmallow Brown is my favorite color. The color looks even better as time passes.
Just a tip: You really should finish a whole bottle for the length of hair that you have. So that you will be sure to color all your hair evenly.
ParisB says
Thanks for the tip Melvel! I shall use up the next bottle next time and see how it goes. Problem was my hair already felt saturated so I thought I didn’t need anymore. But will use your tip next time 😀
j3nny9irL says
Oh! Now that is where the picture came from! haha should’ve known. Well it does look very easy though. Hmmm I think right, the back part of your hair is kinda like virgin hair bcoz it’s shorter that’s why the colours don’t stick to it yet. You should alwiz start from where your hair is still new and slather up a bit then only continue to the top of the head. I guess that way you get more even colour 🙂
Aiyah anyways it still look great haha for RM38 man… No complaints rite
ParisB says
Erm… but my hair (should) be used to being coloured 🙂 It was all virgin hair as it were cos its been ages since I had any colour done. Perhaps next time I’ll pull a comb through if there’s no one on hand to help. It’ll help distribute colour more evenly too 😀 But as you said, for RM38 I ain’t complaining! 😉
j3nny9irL says
Hmmm the next time you do colour your hair better get more butterfly clips or some other clips to section your hair. Now I’m tempted to play haha 😛 NooOOooo….
Evonne says
How a great review ! You look great with the colour ! I am gonna try this soon ^^
ParisB says
Thanks Evonne! I hope it works for you too 🙂
Volvoxx says
The first time I colored my own hair at home was ages ago. I have thick black hair, and as a result (since I didn’t bleach before coloring, and probably I chose a ‘safe’ dark brown shade), my hair, post coloring, is just the same as before coloring. Suffice to say, I never really bothered buying a box to try coloring my own hair again.
My BF has grey hair problems…so instead of having to go to the salon and spend a fortune, I nagged him to let me do it for him…which turned out nicely 😀 . Once I used the leftovers and colored my hair (his hair was really short then) and I think I saw a tinge of color this time. Haha!
ParisB says
Its so much easier to colour someone else’s hair than to do it ourselves eh? Very dark hair can pose a problem, especially if you want to have a very light colour. Best way to achieve this is to bleach and then colour… but how many of us will do that at home eh? 😉
Volvoxx says
I haven’t had my hair colored professionally…but my general conception about it is that…I’d rather not kill my hair that much by bleaching it. It wouldn’t be so bad if I’d go to a proper professional salon to do it but to do it myself……I’m imagining myself standing in the bathroom and screaming while holding a whole clump of my hair that dropped off. Yikes!
ParisB says
Haha… I know what you mean. I’d never bleach my own hair too. I’d leave it to the professionals 😛
xin says
nice! im definitely going to get one. prob can dye chai’s hair somemore to share a box. LOL. i wonder how is this compared to the Beauteen which i have tried 2x
ParisB says
haha!! Just don’t use pink else I don’t think Chai will agree -__-
Rane says
I love Liese Bubble dye too, have tried brown and pink previously. I have thick hair thus one box is just nice for me 🙂 Great to hear that it’s selling in MY now, as I bought mine at RM50 per box from SG before~
ParisB says
Golly, that’s pretty expensive. Yes its been available here since August, I think 😀 glad you’re liking it too
Jessica says
Hair colour never show up like it is on the box and I have to say, the colour looks much nicer on you than on the box! I’m on the lookout for DIY hair dyes that carries purple undertones.
ParisB says
Thank you Jessice 😉 I know Liese has pink tones but I’m not sure about purple. I think L’Oreal has one, but theirs isn’t a non drip formula
