Zohn Ho looks so young you wouldn’t think he has had 13 years of makeup artist experience under his belt. Plus, he is funny and cute. Estee Lauder sure know how to pick their guys 😉 Zohn Ho is, to give him his full title, the Estee Lauder Global Premier Makeup Artist and Regional Makeup Artist/Trainer Asia Pacific *pause for breath* Whew!
I love his sense of humour best and the fact he said “Makeup shouldn’t be complicated so don’t complicate things!”
I had the chance to chat to Zohn recently so in the spirit of sharing and caring, here are some tips from the Estee Lauder makeup maestro’s lips.
Can you really do eye makeup with just one brush?
Watching Zohn Ho do eye makeup is mesmerizing. He uses just one brush. One brush that he threatens to auction off to the highest bidder because it is pure magic. The secret however, says Zohn, is not in the brush. It is in the application and the exquisite texture of the new Estee Lauder Pure Colour eyeshadows.
The new True Vision technology in the Pure Color Eyeshadows allows you to apply eyeshadows easily and quickly without compromising on colour. So Zohn uses just one brush, taps it on the surface of the shadow to pick up just enough product, and applies it in a windshield wiper motion. Results? Perfect smokey eyes!
How do you lift your eyes so you look more wide eyed and awake?
When you draw on the bottom lash line, take the line at the edge of your eye upwards. It will draw the onlooker’s eye upwards, giving the impression of eyes that are lifted up. It also looks more sultry rather than droopy.
How can I use the teal in the Blue Dahlia palette?
Mix it with the other colours to make it more wearable. Zohn suggests the XO method. If you use the palette diagonally, you can create a day look one way and a night look another way using 3 colours. If you are adventurous, go around the palette to use all 5 colors.
How do you start your eye makeup?
Start with eyeliner. Draw the eyeliner along your lash line (its ok if its not straight) and into your lashes. The eyeliner will frame the eyes to give you a starting point. Then, apply your eyeshadow, on top of the eyeliner to help the liner last longer. Its alright if your eyeliner isn’t straight because you’d blend it all out once you apply eyeshadow. (PB notes: I tried this and it cuts eye makeup time so yes, try it!)
How to make eyes look more captivating?
Apply a glaze over your eye makeup to soften the look, give a glow and to draw and hold attention to your eyes. Zohn uses a drop of Advanced Night Repair mixed with DoubleWear concealer and lightly brushed over your eyeshadow and along the cheekbones with a blending brush. Interestingly, Zohn was inspired to use this technique after attending a baking class! Gotta admit that glazed buns do look much more attractive and appetizing, doesn’t it? 😉 I’ve given this one a shot and I’ll be sharing my thoughts soon!
How do you do red lips so that it lasts?
Apparently, Zohn Ho’s signature look is red lipstick. Zohn discourages us from using a lipliner first. Instead, fill in your lips with lip colour, and then using a lip brush, draw on the outline of the lips. Blot, and apply more colour. This way, he says, your red lips will last… even through kissing. Fascinating… couldn’t give that one a shot 😛
What is a must have colour from the new Pure Colour Eyeshadow range?
Without doubt, Black Crystals and Mink. Black Crystals is a darkened metallic grey-black that is perfect for an easy and quick smokey eye (although I’d just wear it to work 😛 ) and Mink is a matte deep brown that everyone can use for a fool proof look.
I ran out the next day and got my Black Crystals teehee! So don’t all rush to the Estee Lauder counter at once!
I’ll be playing with a couple of the new Pure Color eyeshadow singles so I’ll be bringing my thoughts on them soon.
Incidentally, I have decided NOT to get either of the palettes from Blue Dahlia. I had been wanting them for a long time, but after seeing them, I realized that the singles attract me more and I may not get much use out of the palettes since I already have a ton of blue eyeshadow. So I’m sticking with the Pure Color Eyeshadow singles instead 🙂
In the meantime, I hope the tips here have helped someone! 😉

Pure Color Eyeshadow Singles retail at RM70 each at all Estee Lauder counters. Blue Dahlia is limited edition and the 5 colour eyeshadow palettes retail at RM142 at 6 selected counters only – Isetan (Lot 10, The Gardens, KLCC) and Parkson (KLCC, 1 Utama, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur)
Hanny says
Hmmm… If Estee Lauder Singles are RM 70 then Bobbi Brown’s eyeshadows aren’t THAT expensive, yes?
And I’ve never applied eyeliner before eyeshadow… hmm.. Gotta try that. Sorry for going off topic tho!
ParisB says
I think EL and BB are about par. Depends on preferences 🙂
lynne says
you need to stop posting pictures of gorgeous eyeshadow palettes AND provide cool tips on how to apply them, cos now I WANT! *wails*
bimbotic moment aside, yes do share the results of the ‘glazing’ method – i’m really curious about it!
ParisB says
Hehe ok I will stop la… 😛 I have actually tested the glazing method and its actually surprising! Will share soon as I can!
Pink Cotton says

ParisB says
Nope the center black colour in the palette is not Black Crystals. The latter is a single 🙂 Do share if the liner before eyeshadow works for you 🙂

I bought Black Cyrstal last week and tried the colour at home, unfortunately the colour doesn’t suit me…I think! But to be fair, I tried the the colour without proper guidance from the EL make up artist, so I probably will have to go back and get thier advice on the proper application of it. It will be great if you can share with us your review on Black Crystal! thanks a bunch.
ParisB says
I will! 🙂 Am getting to grips with it myself. I like it worn as a liner, as a dark base and mixed with other shades like purple or green. Try it! I love black shadow 🙂
shusheshe says
Hm..eyeliner THAN eyeshadow? I’ll have to try that one of these days…
ParisB says
Works best when you’re doing a smokey-ish look
Sandra says
I don’t use eyeliner/eyeshadow; but thanks for lipstick tips there!
ParisB says
Glad one of the tips helped! Am glad Zohn shared a lip tip too. I guess many of us take applying lipstick for granted cos the eyes are the hardest to work
AnT says
Wow! Red lips that will last even through kissing! LOL Me will try it out soon 😛
Wonder did Zohn applied some lip colour on his lips or not. Looks pink 😀
ParisB says
Hey AnT Do test out the kissing trick and let me know if it works… 😉

Hi Paris,
I agree with JasmineT. U look radiant-glowy in the photo, i like that too. Would like to hear about your review about Shu Eumura Stage Performer Instant Glow.
Tq.
ParisB says
Hiya Kim I believe its the Lancome Teint Miracle foundation. I don’t have the Shu Uemura Stage Performer Instant Glow so I can’t review it now. If I ever get my mitts on it, you’ll know 🙂
milktea says
She’s right, Paris! You look sultry! 🙂 Your own makeup or Zohn did a makeover on you? (not dissing your makeup skills, okay?)
ParisB says
Unfortunately Zohn didn’t touch me with his magic 😛 The base makeup was mine and eyes too but it was touched up with the new Pure Color eyeshadows and made darker and more smokey. The rest are mine 🙂 Eyes really do make a difference eh?
ParisB says
Zohn was great fun! Thanks for the observation on my skin… er.. to be honest I’m a little hazy on details but I think its the new Lancome Teint Miracle foundation 🙂

Do the shiny bits in Black Crystals fallout? Sometimes these fallouts irritate my eyes.
ParisB says
So far, no fall out for me – I hate those that fall out too!
