Fenling Fenling Quite Contrary : How does it stack up to Ecotools?

June 23, 2010 Paris B 15 Comments

A while ago, I told you that I picked up a brush that looked like the one from Ecotools, felt like the one from Ecotools but was in fact by “Fenling”

With a name like Fenling, yes its something that came out of China. But point to note: So does Ecotools brushes.

This one’s a short handled powder brush with synthetic bristles like that of Ecotools, and a bamboo handle. Point to note again: Ecotools does not make a short handled powder brush so this one’s not a copy or a dupe in the true sense of the word.

But I know what you’re thinking. “So what if its not a copy or a dupe – how does Fenling stack up?”

Really, it stacks up quite well indeed!

For a price like RM16.90, you could do worse for a powder brush. I will not recommend this one for mineral powder foundation because its not dense enough. In fact, its a little floppy.

But if what you want is a powder brush to brush on loose powder, or to apply powder foundation in place of a sponge, hey! you could do worse! You could even use it for blush if you like although I find that it splays too much.

It works, it travels well, its soft and you won’t cry if it goes missing or your cat eats it. You’d just go out and pick up another because at RM16.90 your wallet won’t cry either.

Pros: Soft synthetic bristles, Handy size for a powder brush, Applies loose powder or pressed powder or powder foundation well enough, Good for travel, Affordable

Cons: Not easy to find, Looks too much like the Ecotools (including packaging) to cause confusion

So, there you have it. Were you thinking that this self-proclaimed brand snob would be harsh on it for looking like Ecotools? Don’t you love it when I’m totally contrary to public belief? 😉

Would you get this?

Paris B

The Fenling powder brush retailed at RM16.90 and I found it at a Jusco Wellness pharmacy in MidValley Megamall – not sure where else it can be found.

I’ve seen these ‘dupes’ around too and though it may somewhat feel the same, I have to admit I’m a full-time supporter of Ecotools for what they’re doing for the environment etc.
So, no Fen Ling for me..I’ll stick to my Ecotools…I love em toooo much!

Ecotools brushes are awesome (that bamboo blush brush is going to die from being used everyday!) but for a no-brand, the Fenling isn’t bad and its easy on the pocket for those for whom it might be a concern 🙂 Better than buying those scratchy cheapo brushes I see at beauty shops anyway 😛

True, it’s a great alternative to Ecotools. 🙂 I have almost all of their brushes, bought em on one of those drugstore sales in US (courtesy of a friend) *hugs brushes*

I’ve heard of Buy 1 Get 1 Free I think in the US – its the best time to get the Ecotools! I shall be keeping an eye out for sales to get another blush brush 😛

Oh, I’ve gotten four brushes from the Fenling brand too! Three are these slightly-floppy-mostly-dense long-handled Kabukis that are oddly perfect for liquid and cream foundation application, while the last is a *huge* Kabuki with multi-coloured bristles.

The thing about this brand is that their brushes are all dense, but not quite dense enough for something like say, mineral foundation application. They are great for their price though, and I have to say I love how the synthetic bristles feel on the skin. Glad to see you liked it too! 🙂

I did see some other brushes but didn’t pay attention – glad to know there are other brushes in the line that work too.

Now only do I realize that the cheapo brushes I bought from Yokoso Shiyuka recently are by Fenling too! And they’re really surprisingly soft, compared to the other scratchy/pokey brushes selling there.

I’m still looking for a powder brush to travel with so I might just go hunt for this one the next time I’m back in KL. The price sounds really tempting to a girl on a budget… which I’m always on 😛

You’re welcome! They aren’t bad – just look too much like Ecotools to be comfortable hehe

Hmmm I actually bought the Fen Ling Brush to try out. Seriously it feels exactly the same as Ecotools. I’m an Ecotools supporter as well. I must say that Fen Ling has that very strong lacquer smell which I do not like. I tried washing it but the smell is still there. Oh well… I just bought one to try and I bought it from Jusco Wellness Pharmacy at Sunway Pyramid. I’m not sure where else it’s available though 🙂

Hmm… I didn’t notice a smell. Maybe quality differs from batch to batch – its not bad right? Not perfect but will do 🙂

I saw Fenling 6 pieces brushes selling at Sasa,Pyramid today. It’s at promotion price now at rm44.90 if I’m not mistaken.I’m still not sure whether to get this or the Ecotools one.I saw the 6 pieces of brushes from Ecotools selling at Shins,Pyramid too. It’s around rm84+..So which to pick?Is Ecotools more expensive online or getting it at Shins is cheaper?I’m not sure where to get Ecotools online though….

Ecotools is definitely cheaper online (The markup at Shins is crazy!) If you are used to shopping online, you can try Makeup Masala where I got my Ecotools brushes. I don’t know how Fenling brush sets fare. I’ve only tried the one brush featured.

I’ve just got the Fenling 6 piece brush at Sasa Subang Parade at RM44.10. Not bad for that kind of price. Ecotools at Shins is sooooo expensive for the same 6 piece brush. Maybe I’ll try look around if somebody is selling it online in Malaysia.

I remember when I first tried the #antipodesskinca I remember when I first tried the #antipodesskincare Aura Manuka Honey Mask. It blew my mind away! Soothes skin. Boosts hydration and just makes you feel like you have the best skin ever! Not kidding. If you have a spot or irritated skin, it calms it down and helps get rid of your spots too. Honey is anti bacterial after all, so it’s a great multitasker.
I also love the Manuka Honey Skin brightening Day Cream. It’s light but creamy and sinks into the skin. I’ve reviewed them both on the blog in the past. If you run a search for Antipodes, you’d also notice how much I love the brand! 😁
I’m super late with this but if you’re planning to purchase any of these 3 Manuka honey items from TNS Skinlab, the code MYWSTUFF10 will give you an extra 10% off (until tomorrow 31 Dec) I highly recommend grabbing the Aura mask. You’ll never want to be without (I always have a backup!)
Thanks for the gift @tnsskinlab and I must apologise for my tardiness 😩 I’ll learn to cope better from next week!
