A little while ago, I set a little “Mission: Impossible” task for readers who were interested in being guest reviewers for the new Maybelline Color Sensational lipsticks. Happily, I got some responses else it would have fallen on my face won’t it? 😛
So here we have 4 lipsticks and 4 reviews. Problem was the winner of Summer Sunset was going overseas and could not fulfill her mission and no one else picked Summer Sunset! What’s wrong girls? Don’t be afraid of red lipstick! So Summer Sunset will be reviewed by yours truly who is only too happy to slick on the red 🙂
You will already have seen lots of reviews on these lipsticks on the net but do take another moment to see what some non beauty bloggers have to say about these (they did an excellent job!). Reader reviews in the raw and unedited 🙂
Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Pink Bloom (by Kimberly)
Texture: The texture of this lipstick was very smooth. It was not drying, but because I have dry lips, I had to apply some lip balm as a base before applying Pink Bloom to make it look better.
Colour: Pink Bloom in the tube looked like quite a bright pink to me, with a smooth ‘metallic’ finish. I wouldn’t usually have chosen this colour, mainly because I didn’t think ‘metallic’ colours suit my skintone, but Pink Bloom was surprisingly lovely on me. The pink is actually nicely toned down with the metallic finish so it looked chic and sweet at the same time.
Another thing I noticed was the staying power of Pink Bloom. After many gulps of water from my bottle after I put it on in the morning, and coffee during tea time, the colour was still prominent on my lips. I only had to reapply after lunch, and the colour was actually still there at the time, only that I had to smooth it out as some of the colour had faded from parts of my lips.
Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Buff (By Juan)
Texture: Very creamy and glides on oh so smoothly.
Colour: Very intense
At first application, I was surprised at the intense vibrant colour. I expected it to be of a natural tone quite like a skin tone due to its name. However, the colour came across as rosy, as you can see in the picture and I am surprised that the colour actually looks wearable. The intense bright colour also made my lip looked plump and thicker and I especially liked that it has staying power despite its creamy texture.
Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Papaya Milk (by Calz)
When I first received the lipstick, looking at the outer shell, I was excited because it was “orangey” and for my skin tone (I am quite fair), I can use an orange-based lipstick. However, I got a bit disappointed when I saw the inside because the colour was red. So, I drew a little on my hands. It did not look too red. However, when I put it on, it was very red! I think it is because of my skin tone, the contrast was great.
As for the name, I do not think it suits the colour. Papaya Milk may give an impression of a light orange colour (as least for me).
Nevertheless, I absolutely love the texture and feel on my lips. I have dry lips and I am lazy when it comes to applying lip balm. The lipstick is moisturising. It felt like applying coloured vaseline. Ok, I am exaggerating. Perhaps it felt like body shop’s cream lipbalm with colour (the lip balm which has the fight aids packaging).
Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Sunset Red (by ParisB 😛 )
Texture: As everyone has mentioned, it is smooth and moisturizing.
Colour: Very strong and pigmented.
Summer Sunset is a deep dark red. The color of the lipstick does not match that of the case which can be a pain if you don’t test it first. I’m not quite into deep reds as I prefer brighter reds so this one wasn’t a love for me for colour.
That said, if you are more tanned, I think it would be a lovely red on you. Because I’m fair, it comes across making me look old 😛
And as a bonus, here’s the swatches of all 4 colours on my skin.
Interestingly, you might note that on my skin, Buff looks red while on Juan above, it looks a rosy neutral. If I were buying these lipsticks, I’d get Papaya Milk because I think it suits my colouring best 🙂
Pros: Affordable, Pigmented, Moisturizing, Smooth texture
Cons: Colours are very intense, Colours in tube are different from case and name, Better to test before buying.
I hope you have enjoyed reading other people’s points of view on one same product. I might run more of these in future – spread the love and all – do let me know if you’d like that 😉

I was so ready to go out and get Buff when I see it on Juan but went ‘Eeek! Brown!’ when I see it swatched on your skin tone, PB! 🙁
p.s. I enjoy reading guest reviews (MWS readers are a well-informed bunch!) so yes, the occasional post is most welcomed. 🙂
ParisB says
Yup the colors look so different on our skin tones. I’d suggest Revlon Blush for a soft rosy neutral – at least on me 😉

Would you believe I love the texture of Maybelline Colour SEnsational Lipstick and I use them all??? hahahah I love them ! Not all the shades for sure but how moisturizing it is! 🙂
ParisB says
Its great that it works for you 😀 The shades are very pigmented – maybe a lighter colour might do the trick for me on this one 🙂

I would really, really like to try one, but I still have not decided which one to get. I have too many pinks as it is, and I’m afraid of reds… Haihz. Decisions decisions. Thanks for tempting me, though! ^.^
ParisB says
Haha there are quite many colours so I’m sure there’s one for you! Maybe a light neutral? Buff is too dark.

I’m gonna swatch Buff next! It looks good. What I usually do it use my fingertip to collect the colour from the lower sides of the store’s lippy tester where it’s untouched. Then I brush it on my lips. Buff looks more pigmented than Revlon’s Colourburst in Blush though.
ParisB says
Buff is definitely darker than Revlon’s Blush. Its not a color for me but you might like it depending on your colouring 🙂

It’s annoying when the names are by no means indication of the colour presented in the tube. It can be confusing and cause unneccesary waste of money when the colour doesn’t come off on you as expected. worse still, looks horrible on your lips. sigh.
ParisB says
Well I guess that’s what testers are for 😉 we’re lucky we can test before buying unlike people in some other countries.
Connie says
you girls pull off those colors better than I ever could! I do enjoy reading guest reviews occasionally 🙂
Kimberly says
Haha, thanks Connie!
It was really fun trying to do a guest review with no experience whatsoever..and it was hilarious asking my colleague to take a close up shot of my lips in the pantry while no one else was looking!!! =P
Thanks again to Paris for this great chance..=D
ParisB says
You’re welcome Kimberly and I’m glad you had fun doing it 🙂

I dragged myself to Watsons after your first post in April, and tried out every single tester left on the rack. For some reason, none of the colours suited my skintone! sobs… they do look so lovely on your reviewers but I guess I’ll have to wait for something else to come along. Getting the right lipstick is really annoying cos I have different coloured lips 🙁
ParisB says
Perhaps you’d prefer something less intense? The new Revlon ones are very pigmented too

I so wanted pink please because it was supposed to be a MAC dupe for Angel. What’s the closest to MAC Angel/Maybelline Pink Please that we have locally yea?
I desperately need a MAC Angel 🙁
I have this in Chesnut. I like how it applies, way better than Revlon’s Soft Nude which is just a disaster on me. Drying, sank into the lines (that I never even KNEW i had! LOL) streaky and just bad. I love the colour of Maybelline’s Watershine Pure in BM31, just wish they had that colour in colour sensational’s formula because watershine is not pigmented at all.

i was just wondering how much the lipstick retails for?
ParisB says
Apologies its RM24.90.
