“Give me Liberty or Give me Death” were the famous words attributed to American freedom fighter Patrick Henry. But that’s morbid isn’t it? Instead MAC Cosmetic’s new collection is called “Give me Liberty of London” – a collection done in collaboration with Liberty a very famous fabric store and luxury department store in London.
If you ever go to London, do go to Liberty’s – the exterior of the store is built in Tudor style and is a whimsical throwback to the Elizabethan age. These days, it has expanded from being a fabric store to a luxury department store but its worth a visit and I love their deep purple plastic bags which is their signature colour! I think my Mom still has hers kept away from our last visit there 🙂
MAC’s new “Liberty of London” collection draws inspiration from the fabrics that Liberty’s carries. The packaging is white with whimsical artwork on it. In another time and in another place I’d say it makes me think of Alice in Wonderland. But in this time and place I’d not say it because I think its far more whimsical than the current perception of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland 😛 But there’s my prejudices showing. Some pictures of products are after the cut.
The collection is quite large and for MAC, quite muted.
Images show from top left:-
- Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl (peach with shimmer) with Summer Rose (pink with shimmer) closed next to it to show you the case.
- Deborah Henry rocking MAC’s Liberty of London look – she looked amazingly like the model on the ad!
- Lipsticks (from left) in Ever Hip (creamy light coral), Peachstock (peach), Blooming Lovely (lilac mauve) and Petals and Peacocks (bright pink)
- Eyeshadows (from left) in Give me Liberty of London (light matte pink), Birds and Berries (Dark green blue), Bough Grey (bluish gray), Flame’s Desire (reddish purple) and Free to Be (matte coral)
There are also 2 lipglass, 2 blush, 2 nail lacquer and 2 sizes of makeup bags in the Liberty for MAC print.
My eye was caught by the Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl. I’ve been using Shy Beauty for a while now and I’m quite liking it used as a very light blush instead of merely as a highlighter as recommended. I’m just wondering if Shell Pearl might not be quite close in shade to Shy Beauty. Maybe I’ll bring Shy Beauty and compare it in store 😛
The MAC Liberty of London collection is now available at all MAC stores. No swatches from me but you can expect the inimitable Jenn to provide us with swatches soon! 😉
I think it would have been nice if MAC had come up with an eyeshadow colour that’s the signature purple of Liberty’s. Perhaps Flame’s Desire was meant to be it but its not quite deep enough a purple for that.
Inspired by Liberty Fabric in Strawberry Thief
If you are wondering where the “Liberty of London” features in MAC’s new collection, its in the design on the case. MAC drew inspiration from the fabric designed by William Morris in 1883 – a design called Strawberry Thief. Here’s how it looks:-
MAC updated it on a background of white and added splashes of colour and then colour coordinated their cosmetics with the colours on the design.
Has anything caught your eye? Its just Shell Pearl beauty powder for me for now but if I find its too similar to Shy Beauty I’ll pass 🙂

I saw some clothes from the Liberty of London for Target line. Loved them, too bad Target is not anywhere near Malaysia 🙁
As for this MAC collection, hmm…not so much.
ParisB says
Haha! I like your reaction – I felt a little hmm… too 😉
plue says
lipstick rm66, lipglass RM66
you miss out the blush? blush rm79. LOL.
i like the designs on this collection and i really think it’s purdy! maybe the signature purple of Liberty’s is in the blush, Dirty Plum. quite a dark purple colour it is!
ParisB says
Thanks for the prices. Wasn’t paying attention 😛 I was surprised at the blush but no I think its in the eyeshadow. Anyone who can wear Liberty’s purple on their cheeks must be.. er… dead? 😛
plue says
eh pb, do u mean i ish dead? LOL, cuz i got that purple!
the SA told me to use it as a contour colour, a more glam version instead of using brown. good for fairer skin ladies and also for night outing.
so now i know me ish dead. dead. dead. boohoo. pb u cruel woman.
ParisB says
Erm eh? I think I said that IF they used the Liberty’s royal purple for blush, it would be perfect for a zombie. Go check out Liberty’s royal purple here and then I’d dare you to wear it even if its for contour 😛
plue says
EH????? Okay, now i got ALL mixed up. For once I thought you said MAC Liberty’s purple, instead of Liberty’s liberty purple. =_= Sorry, my bad!
If that’s the shade of blush, dun think can use it, but then, who knows! LOL. If it’s e/s it’d be awesome!
ParisB says
I know right? I can just see it as eyeshadow although I’m sure there’s already a colour in MAC eyeshadows that can pass 🙂
Jenn says
The scarf is crazy!! :S But then again it’s a Liberty… i just wonder how many of those can they sell!
I’ll definitely be bringing home several items with me, but i’m most excited about Shell Pearl! 😀
Thanks for the mention and flattery!! Wahaha!! i’ll go swatch this weekend! XD
ParisB says
They probably only have a few scarves in and probably snapped up by collectors 😛 I’m waiting to test out Shell Pearl. I don’t want to bring back something thats going to look remarkably like Shy Beauty – but then you could probably tell me that eh? 😉
Sue says
I just don’t like their price when they charge them together with the products. -_- Argh. I can only say hi & bye MAC. 😛
ParisB says
hmm… not sure what you mean by charging the price with the products…?

I only got Prim & Proper blush and Blooming Lovely lipstick from this collection. Shell Pearl is sold out here so are most of the lippies. I wanted Petals & Peacocks but found it a bit similar to Show Orchid. Blooming Lovely is a beautiful spring colour. It’s gonna be my most used lippie this spring 😉
I tried Shell Pearl but it’s a bit too light for me. I was never really into beauty powder. I’m all about MAC blushes. 😀
ParisB says
I was quite taken in by Blooming Lovely too! Its gorgeous. But I was afraid it’d be a bit dry.
Amanda says
Give it a try 🙂 It doesn’t dry my lips at all (I always have dry lips). I like the texture of Amplified lipsticks.
ParisB says
Oke I’ll go take another look 🙂
Jyoan says
All the lipstick colours are beautiful. =) But Blooming Lovely is my least favourite, because of skin tone difference. I do not understand Shell Pearl also, because I don’t use highlighters. That would be too light as a blusher for me. But yes, it’s really a hot favourite over here too. Look forward to your Shell Pearl comparison, and most likely lipstick swatch too. haha. You have so many lippies!
ParisB says
Yeah Shell Pearl looks potentially very very light. Might only work as blush for those who are extremely fair. I know right – lippes are my weakness 😛
lyn says
I bought the blush in Prim & Proper a couple of weeks ago when it wasn’t officially launched yet. That was the only item I liked from the collection.
ParisB says
Interestingly the blushes didn’t catch my eye. Now that’s really strange for me 😉
unique daisy says
Did mac had a price increment recently? the last time i visit mac, the lipstick was still RM63. Or is it just for this collection?
ParisB says
I think its just for the Give me Liberty of London collection due to the prints 🙂
