Shu Uemura UV Underbase Mousse SPF30 PA+++ – new and improved

March 15, 2010 Paris B 35 Comments

The UV Underbase mousse is one of Shu Uemura’s “Famous Five” and one of their most iconic products. So when a brand chooses to revamp one of their star products, you better jolly well hope they come up smelling roses.

Happily Shu Uemura does 🙂

What makes it different from its precedessor? A couple of things:-

  • The UV underbase mousse now comes with SPF30 PA+++ for better uv protection
  • The nozzle dispenses the mousse more easily

These are the 2 things I noticed immediately. Also, the packaging has been upgraded to be in line with the UV Under base Fluid. Very good idea 😛

The function of the UV Under base mousse however remains the same as its predecessor – its a primer and makeup base and has a light tint so you can use it on its own. I much prefer the mousse to the fluid under base as it performs better for me. Also, Shu Uemura’s new beauty ambassador for this product is something!

Used on its own, the UV Underbase mousse is very light and sheer. If you like, dust some loose powder over it and it can help create a more even tone for your skin. I don’t advocate not using a separate sunscreen but if you don’t like sunscreen, this can help to a degree.

Used as a makeup base, I like this best under powder foundation. It grabs onto powder foundation like a magnet and does not let go so I get a lovely base look. I’ve recently been test running a new moisturizer that’s leaving my skin a little oily in the day, so I use this base primer to keep the oilies away and keep my foundation looking fresh. This might be one for the oily skinned girls 🙂

The new nozzle allows you to dispense the foam while holding the can upright which I find so much more convenient than the old one that required you to hold it vertical downwards. Also it can last a long while since you only need very little – slightly smaller than a golf ball size.

Does this new formula perform better than the original? I think so. I used the previous formula for a while but then I passed it onto a friend because I felt that the mousse left my skin feeling a bit dry. However, this new formula does not leave my skin feeling dry so sorry my friends, I’m holding onto this one 😛

One small snag. At time of writing, I don’t know how much this one will be. I was told it would be launched in March 2010 but keep a look out in the stores to be sure. The previous UV Underbase mousse retailed at RM135/65g. I’m expecting this one to be about the same price.

Update: This item retails at RM108 – Thanks Jeslyn! 🙂

Pros: Light texture, Might suit those with oily skin, Good base for powder foundation, Easier to dispense than previous packaging, Reasonably priced

Cons: There is a fragrance, Some might consider this pricey

Shu Uemura New Beauty Ambassador – Yamada Yu

Also while scouting around the interweb I came across the new beauty ambassador for Shu Uemura – Japanese actress, model, singer Yamada Yu.

She will be fronting the ads for the Shu Uemura UV Under base mousse. I just had to show you because I was absolutely gobsmacked by her legs! Oh to have legs that go on forever like hers 😛

The Shu Uemura UV Underbase Mousse has been around a long time. Have you tried it and if you have, do you like it?

OOOO… It looks lovely, and wow, isn’t a golf-ball sized glob of product too much? Anyways, being new to makeup, and being a college gal, I have not tried it yet, hehe. Perhaps when I get a job… ^.^ Glad that it works for you, though.

And on a lighter note: Lee Chong Wei won the All-England and Ferrari had a roaring one-two finish in the Bahrain Grand Prix, YAY!

Mousse has a wonderful way of “growing” after you have pumped it out of the can so it sorta “grows” to just slightly smaller than a golf ball size LOL And I was pleased about the Badminton though less so about Ferrari. I’m not a fan of Ferrari 😛

Wow those are some LONG legs! I’m glad to hear that the formula is improved! Primers don’t really have an effect on me, but I’m intrigued by the texture of this product. Thanks!

*adds item to HK shopping list* BTW, it looks like quite a miserly-sized bottle. How long does that one tin last for? Then again, the sooner this finishes, the sooner we get to play with new stuff 😛

Its quite small yes but you don’t use a lot each time. Its like hair mousse. 1 bottle can last a long long time coz of all that foaming action 🙂 I don’t know how long it’ll last coz I don’t use it everyday and I gave away my old one 🙂

Haha glad you are liking it – it does help my powder stay on all day but less so with liquid. I’m not sure why 😛

Erm… I’m not sure about silicones to be honest. I’ll check my bottle when I get back provided the ingredients aren’t in Japanese! And yes i’d love to meet up 🙂 I’ll drop you an email 🙂

I’m so interested in this! 😀

And Yamada Yu is super-tall (so is her rumoured boy, actor Oguri Shun *sorry so random*) and she was funny acting as a shopaholic in debt in the drama Binbo Danshi~

I haven’t even heard of her before this *hides* But I read about her romance with Oguri Shun. Apparently reporters at the press conference were more interested in that than in the new Shu Uemura product! LOL

I just bought this base (in pink) and can’t wait to try it tomorrow. When tested at Shu’s, I really liked the texture and find the mousse formula quite a novelty 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation!

I’ve been wanting to try this! Thank you for the review and stating how there’s an older version and this newer version! I am so getting the new version rather than the old version! hehehe.
It costs AUD54 in Australia, by the way. And around SGD65 or something like that in Singapore.

    Hi Paris,

I’ve been a lurker on your site for a while now – absolutely love it! Your reviews are always nice to read and I really appreciate the effort you put into all your entries.

I’ve been using this product since forever! I loved it so much that I remember buying 5 bottles at once! I have your typical combination skin – dry in winter and oily in summer! This mousse is really light and doesn’t cake my skin like other primers or bases. Think of it as a very diluted tinted moisturiser!

I have yet to try the repackaged version but if its anything like the old one then it must be something!

P.S Keep up the good work!

I’d like to ask whether this is a good base for liquid foundations. ^-^

I’m wondering is this suitable for guys who are looking for a sunscreen which can keep their skin matte without looking like a oily faced geisha?

I know a guy who uses this. If you don’t mind that there’ll be a bit of a tint on your skin, you can try it.

    Hi Paris,

was just wondering, does it make your face look really white in photos? and what’s the difference between the pink and beige?

    Reply

      November 15, 2010 at 11:39 am

No it does not make my face look white. Pink is for those with a pink tone and it is supposed to help your skin look more radiant. Beige is for those with a yellow undertone i.e. most Asian skintones.

    Hi Ladies

Just checking if you have experienced any breakout after continous usage of this product. I suspected the new formula cotained silicon and saw the ingredient Dimethicone Peg-10. It did make the skin appear smoother but it made me breakout at chin/jaw area. Even my beautican commented that my face seems to be “clogged” recently. Not sure if this attributed to it but I am giving my face a break from this, sigh!
