Ok its all very well us chatting about makeup and sharing tips on how to apply makeup and what to use but lets take one step back and think for a moment. Have you washed your makeup brushes recently?
I thought about this one over the weekend as I dumped all my regularly used makeup brushes into the sink. It was high time ๐ Yes those are my regularly used brushes up there looking bedraggled like a wet dog ๐
In my early days of blogging, I shared with you tips on how to wash your makeup brushes and I will share these same tips with you again because its how I washed my brushes then and still do.
My brush cleaner of choice is Johnsons & Johnsons Baby Shampoo. Yes, the very same yellow liquid that has not changed since the day I was a wee child.
I keep a little bottle handy in the bathroom for the times when my brushes need cleaning. Hereโs how I use baby shampoo to wash my brushe.
- Pour some baby shampoo in the palm of your hand, add water and create a lather.
- Swirl your brushes in the lather.
- Rinse thoroughly, pat dry and lie flat.
I used to wash my brushes about once a week but since my acquisition of the Stage Keep it Clean Brush Cleaner, Iโve managed to stretch it out to once every 2 weeks.
I picked this one up during their last sale for about RM10. I believe it could be RM40 or not as the case may be. Pretty economical because it can last a long while even with regular use.
To use the Stage Brush Cleaner, I do this:-
- Lay brush on a piece of tissue paper.
- Squirt brush cleaner on it until bristles are damp.
- Wipe brush on tissue to remove dirt and old color.
- Repeat from step 2 if necessary until brush wipes clean.
I found that the Stage brush cleaner made my blush and powder brushes feel softer and fluffier than when I use the baby shampoo. Hence I use it in between proper washing of the brushes.
So, have you washed your brushes lately and if you do, what do you use?

Proud to announce, I did! And I do every weekend, its a date thing between me and all my brushes ๐
ParisB says
Yay for making it routine! I tend to overlook it for up to 2 weeks at a time โ eeps!
geekchic says
Hey! I use the same shampoo too for my brushes! Problem is, I hadnโt been using enough of makeup to clean my brushes. I should clean the blush brush, honestly.
ParisB says
Hahaโฆ snap! Yes clean the blush brush โ its the one I use most often too
Nenen says
Thanks to remind to clean the brushes, I should check all my brushes ๐ . I just find your blog.
ParisB says
I hope to see you round! ๐
LyNn says
*sigh*
i too posted the importance of cleaning and washing makeup brushes on my blog before
but even i myself cant seem to find the time
i do clean them everynight with wet tissue wipes
but not deep cleaning ๐
ParisB says
I donโt do the wet wipes thing perhaps because I donโt like the feel of wet wipes very much ๐ I usually do it on a Saturday morning so it has at least 2 days to dry before Monday when I start using makeup again

I spot clean my brushes after every use. Iโm anal about keeping them white bristles really white!! haha!! ๐
Its really great that the Stage brush cleanser comes with a spray! The MAC one doesnโt, and i find that that causes alot of wastage! I now decant some of it into a spray bottle!! ๐
ParisB says
Yes! I have that MAC brush with white bristles โ 239? The eyeshadow one and the fact that its not white after use bugs me too! I havenโt tried the MAC one but yes, the spray was why I bought the Stage cleaner hahaโฆ
Monstro says
Oooh thanks for the reminder–Iโm slacking in this department!
I like to use Cetaphil for deep cleaning brushes. But I think I need something quick like the Stage one you have as well. ๐
ParisB says
Yep I use the Stage one in between washing โ doesnโt make you feel so bad about not washing the brushes ๐
Sue says
i just washed my brushes the other day! i bought this 80ml detergent from daiso.. works wellโฆ. =D
ParisB says
Thatโs awesome to know!
Cas says
I wash my brushes using Johnsons shampoo too. Which reminds me, been a while since I cleaned em ๐
ParisB says
Yay for Johnsons & Johnsons baby shampoo! ๐ Time to get cleaning missy!
xin says
I just did last weekend too! ๐ also with the good old trusty J&J ๐
ParisB says
Another vote for the J&J! Yay! I bet J&J didnโt now this about their baby shampoo LOL
Shay says
I wash every week!
I got a bottle of cleaner from Beauty Buffet from Bangkok. Great stuff.
I will use the spritz cleaner to get the colour out and use a facial cleanser to wash the brushes.
ParisB says
Ooh never come across Beauty Buffet but hey! Whatever works! ๐
Hanny says
I wash my kabuki brush every weekend, but I use the blue J&J Bodywash insteadโฆ However, dishwashing liquid works pretty well too!!
ParisB says
Ooh I wouldnโt put dishwashing liquid anywhere near my face really. Although you rinse it out clean, some residue may stick to the bristles. Also, dishwashing liquid is harsher and may not be so good for brushes. Just my thoughts.
beetrice says
the Stage brush cleaner is pretty awesome stuff โ and thankfully the only bottle I had to bring to SG! ๐ might pick up a tiny bottle of baby shampoo sometime soon though.
ParisB says
I buy the small bottles of shampoo too. Its the only time I visit the baby department LOL
aichaku says
iโm a clean freak washing every week & using wet wipes aft every application, but i think i wanna pick up this cleaner from Stage too! it sounds v good. thx for sharing it.
ParisB says
Youโre most welcome and I hope you like it if you try it. I should probably do that wet wipes thing but I donโt use eyeshadow brushes much.
Pearl says
Thanks for the sharing especially the method u used w the Stage Brush Cleanser. However I stilll feel doubtful, will the brush really clean by just wiping on the tissue? And my imagination is your dustbin will be full of lotsa tissues! ๐
As for me, I used two methods for my brush.
I used MAC Brush Cleaner (bought at RM35 some time ago) only used to clean my eye brush because they are smaller and easy to clean, qucik to dry too. I tried once to clean my kabuki, but geezzโฆit seems to be so wastedโฆ
So for my kabuki brushes I used Isoderm, a gentle cleanser similar to Cetaphil. Same way as you did with the baby shampoo. I did so to my eye brushes alternately.
ParisB says
Its not the wiping that cleans the brush but the brush cleaner. Also 2 pieces of tissue just about do it for me for a blush brush ๐ I donโt use eyeshadow brushes โ I use fingers ๐ Thanks for sharing your cleaning methods!
Hanz says
Gosh! Such an embarassment to admit, I hardly washed them! Thanks for the reminder & the tip.
ParisB says
Haha no better time than the present! Better for your skin too ๐
Jyoan says
My brush is smelling good. Just used Cetaphil to clean, and after washing off all soap and patting dry, swirled in tea tree oil. Itโs dry now. And the tea tree oil smell has gone off a lot. =))) Bristles really soft. I just love clean things. All of a sudden feel like using my blush again.
ParisB says
Ooh swirled in tea tree oil too? Thats nice ๐
bubbles says
i use 50/50 of face cleanser that i donโt really like for my face and olive oil ๐ then wash them under warm water
ParisB says
Does the olive oil wash clean out?
Amanda says
I wash my liquid foundation brushes and concealer brush after every use using J&J baby shampoo too ๐ I wash the rest of my brushes every Sunday with MAC brush cleaner.
lyn says
For eye brushes, I alternate between the Stage (think itโs RM25 per bottle) and the MAC and usually spot clean so I donโt need to soap them up as frequently. Face brushes are usually washed with J&J every two weeks. Other brushes that I donโt use often get washed every month or so.
gio says
I spot clean them after every use and then every weekend I wash them with the Johnsonsโ shampoo too. ๐
