Reminder: Have you washed your makeup brushes?

Ok its all very well us chatting about makeup and sharing tips on how to apply makeup and what to use but lets take one step back and think for a moment. Have you washed your makeup brushes recently?

I thought about this one over the weekend as I dumped all my regularly used makeup brushes into the sink. It was high time 😛 Yes those are my regularly used brushes up there looking bedraggled like a wet dog 😛

In my early days of blogging, I shared with you tips on how to wash your makeup brushes and I will share these same tips with you again because its how I washed my brushes then and still do.

My brush cleaner of choice is Johnsons & Johnsons Baby Shampoo. Yes, the very same yellow liquid that has not changed since the day I was a wee child.

  • Save

I keep a little bottle handy in the bathroom for the times when my brushes need cleaning. Here’s how I use baby shampoo to wash my brushe.

  • Pour some baby shampoo in the palm of your hand, add water and create a lather.
  • Swirl your brushes in the lather.
  • Rinse thoroughly, pat dry and lie flat.

I used to wash my brushes about once a week but since my acquisition of the Stage Keep it Clean Brush Cleaner, I’ve managed to stretch it out to once every 2 weeks.

  • Save

I picked this one up during their last sale for about RM10. I believe it could be RM40 or not as the case may be. Pretty economical because it can last a long while even with regular use.

To use the Stage Brush Cleaner, I do this:-

  • Lay brush on a piece of tissue paper.
  • Squirt brush cleaner on it until bristles are damp.
  • Wipe brush on tissue to remove dirt and old color.
  • Repeat from step 2 if necessary until brush wipes clean.

I found that the Stage brush cleaner made my blush and powder brushes feel softer and fluffier than when I use the baby shampoo. Hence I use it in between proper washing of the brushes.

So, have you washed your brushes lately and if you do, what do you use?

Hey! I use the same shampoo too for my brushes! Problem is, I hadn’t been using enough of makeup to clean my brushes. I should clean the blush brush, honestly.

I don’t do the wet wipes thing perhaps because I don’t like the feel of wet wipes very much 😛 I usually do it on a Saturday morning so it has at least 2 days to dry before Monday when I start using makeup again

I spot clean my brushes after every use. I’m anal about keeping them white bristles really white!! haha!! 😀

Its really great that the Stage brush cleanser comes with a spray! The MAC one doesn’t, and i find that that causes alot of wastage! I now decant some of it into a spray bottle!! 😀

Yes! I have that MAC brush with white bristles – 239? The eyeshadow one and the fact that its not white after use bugs me too! I haven’t tried the MAC one but yes, the spray was why I bought the Stage cleaner haha…

Oooh thanks for the reminder–I’m slacking in this department!
I like to use Cetaphil for deep cleaning brushes. But I think I need something quick like the Stage one you have as well. 🙂

    I wash every week!

I got a bottle of cleaner from Beauty Buffet from Bangkok. Great stuff.

I will use the spritz cleaner to get the colour out and use a facial cleanser to wash the brushes.

I wash my kabuki brush every weekend, but I use the blue J&J Bodywash instead… However, dishwashing liquid works pretty well too!!

Ooh I wouldn’t put dishwashing liquid anywhere near my face really. Although you rinse it out clean, some residue may stick to the bristles. Also, dishwashing liquid is harsher and may not be so good for brushes. Just my thoughts.

the Stage brush cleaner is pretty awesome stuff – and thankfully the only bottle I had to bring to SG! 😀 might pick up a tiny bottle of baby shampoo sometime soon though.

Thanks for the sharing especially the method u used w the Stage Brush Cleanser. However I stilll feel doubtful, will the brush really clean by just wiping on the tissue? And my imagination is your dustbin will be full of lotsa tissues! 😀
As for me, I used two methods for my brush.
I used MAC Brush Cleaner (bought at RM35 some time ago) only used to clean my eye brush because they are smaller and easy to clean, qucik to dry too. I tried once to clean my kabuki, but geezz…it seems to be so wasted…
So for my kabuki brushes I used Isoderm, a gentle cleanser similar to Cetaphil. Same way as you did with the baby shampoo. I did so to my eye brushes alternately.

Its not the wiping that cleans the brush but the brush cleaner. Also 2 pieces of tissue just about do it for me for a blush brush 🙂 I don’t use eyeshadow brushes – I use fingers 🙂 Thanks for sharing your cleaning methods!

My brush is smelling good. Just used Cetaphil to clean, and after washing off all soap and patting dry, swirled in tea tree oil. It’s dry now. And the tea tree oil smell has gone off a lot. =))) Bristles really soft. I just love clean things. All of a sudden feel like using my blush again.

For eye brushes, I alternate between the Stage (think it’s RM25 per bottle) and the MAC and usually spot clean so I don’t need to soap them up as frequently. Face brushes are usually washed with J&J every two weeks. Other brushes that I don’t use often get washed every month or so.
