How to apply lipstick to look like Song Hye Kyo

March 4, 2010 Paris B 30 Comments

Song Hye Kyo for Laneige

During my introduction to Korean makeup styles by Mr. Steven Cho, makeup artist for Laneige, I perked up a little at his demonstration of how Korean makeup artists apply lipstick on their models.

Apparently, according to Mr. Cho, Korean makeup artists are heavily influenced by the make up artists for Korean drama series because everyone wants to look like the popular actress du jour on tv. Don’t we all!

Here is how he told us to apply lipstick to achieve a natural dewy glowy look just like your favourite Korean movie star or maybe like how Song Hye Kyo looks in the Laneige ads.

  • Use a lip brush and pick up colour from the lipstick tube.
  • Apply the colour on the middle of the lower lip blending outwards with whatever colour remains on your brush.
  • Pick up more colour and apply on your upper lip again starting in the middle of your cupid’s bow and blending outwards with the remaining colour on your brush.
  • Apply a layer of clear or light shiny gloss over your lips.

And you’re done! I attempted that today with my own lip products at home so do hop along if you’d like to see how it works and how it turned out 😀

Nyx Opium Lipstick and Esprique Precious lipgloss

For my Korean movie star dewy kissable lips look, I used the NYX Black Label Opium lipstick and Esprique Precious lipgloss in PK883. If you click over to my earlier review on the NYX Opium lipstick, you’ll see how bright and pigmented it is when applied straight from the tube.

Following Mr. Steven Cho’s instructions, I achieved this dewy look which makes Opium (and any red or dark lipstick) look so much more wearable eh? 😉

  • Using a lip brush, I applied Opium starting from the center of my lips. The colour is sheered out a lot so I’d suggest you can use a slightly deeper shade of lipstick when using this technique.
  • I then dab the lip gloss on the center of my lips and blend it outwards over the lipstick.
  • I get a dewy fresh look that is a great look for the day. I prefer something heavier at night but this is great for simple day looks.

The Esprique Precious gloss is lovely. Its not sticky and its a light sweet pink with lovely sparkles in it. Mine came in the Christmas set so I don’t know how much it retails for usually. Best for you to ask at the Kose counters.

Before and After shots

The reason for using a lip brush to apply the lipstick is so that the colour is light and sheer. If you use lipstick straight from the tube, it tends to go on the lips stronger which does not quite fit the natural “kiss me” look the Korean artistes are going for.

Are you going to try this yourself? Or are you already using this method of lipstick application?

Did I pass the Song Hye Kyo pout? *mwaks*

Muaks. Pass with flying colours. 🙂

Good tip to use. Too much work though if I’m on the run. Good for the first application of the day before I dash 🙂

Mwaks! Yes its only good 1st thing in the morning. For the rest of the day, I just leave it bare or slick on lipstick instead.

nice post, but i’m already using this way to apply my lipstick, haha 😀
my main reason was because I didn’t want too much color on my lips as some lipsticks are very pigmented. =)

You pass of course, with flying colors!! Hehehe!! Your lips is so shiny!! 😀

I can’t bear to use a lipbrush to apply lipstick… don’t want to ruin my lipstick in the tube!! 😛

I thought Song Hye Kyo looked AMAZING in that picture!! So pretty and classy!!! 😀

Haha… same!! I don’t like using lip brushes in general – I just go straight from the tube. But sometimes (like for this method, no choice la…) You know what? I had to google Song Hye Kyo like crazy to find a pic – didn’t know who she was >.<

OOO!! Pretty!!! You are indeed a lipstick goddess, not meaning to be cheesy, but you are! But I have an ultimate dislike for glosses, because they do not stay on very long, haha. I prefer glossy lipsticks!

I don’t really follow Korean stars though, being more of a Hollywood and TVB person. ^.^

Ooh how nice to be called a goddess hehe 🙂 I don’t use glosses much I’m a lipstick gal but this is one time I’m glad I have glosses on hand to transform a look 😉 I don’t know Korean stars either. Come to think about it, I’m not sure I’m familiar with any stars 😛

Neat lip trick! I think I’m using the lazy girl’s version of this – I slick on lightly colored lip balm and top it with lashings of gloss… it really does give you the “come kiss me” look! 😀

Btw, if you didn’t mention that you’re using NYX Opium, I never would have guessed it sheered out so prettily! 😛

That’s a clever way of doing it too. I don’t usually like coloured lip balm though. I tend to go out of line after a while and I start looking like the Joker in Batman >.< Actually Opium sheered out a little too much for my liking LOL I'm thinking the stronger lip is more for me.

This technique is a great way to ease into lipstick. But lipstick or lip gloss is a matter of preference – no need to force yourself to like one over the other 🙂

It hardly lasts to be honest. Unless you use a longer lasting gloss then it can last a little while. You’d have to reapply after eating or drinking
