Maybe its Maybelline Long Extreme Double Stretch Mascara

December 2, 2009 Paris B 21 Comments

Ooh… Maybelline mascara and I have a love-hate relationship. I love how cheap and affordable they are (especially when mascara dries up so quickly) but I hate how they tend to weigh down my lashes and smell chemical because the fumes bug my eyes.

So, when I got my hands on the Maybelline Long Extreme Double Stretch mascara I eyed it with suspicion.

The Maybelline Long Extreme Double Stretch mascara (which is a mouthful btw) reminds me of the XXL Volume mascara. Same principle – 2 step mascara. Step 1 involves you applying a layer of white fibers on your lashes to add length and volume and Step 2 is to apply the mascara over the fibres. I hated XXL so I was already a little prejudiced 😛

There was some consolation for me:-

  • The brush head though long, is not fat like the XXL Mascara
  • The chemical fumes are not too strong – my eyes hardly feel anything
  • The brush bristles are well spaced and reduces clumping

On the flip side the brush handle connected to the holder is too short since its a dual ended mascara so I have to hold the brush at an angle and use only the front half of the brush or the holder/body will bump against my face. I’m not sure you know what I mean 😛

The brush does apply the white fibers quite evenly and when I use the black mascara over it, it does not turn grey. The black covers the white fibers quite well and the fibers do help to lengthen your lashes so thats all good.

However, do note that its NOT a volumizing mascara so don’t expect va-va-voom fat lashes as in the TV ad. Seriously, those lashes in the ad are plastic! You can see the light glinting off the plastic shine 😛 Here’s a picture I prepared earlier to show you the effects on my puny lashes 😛

You can see the difference in lash length and there is some volumizing at the root but the overall effect is very natural and not super glampuss. I’d use this as an everyday mascara because I’m not born with it and so its definitely Maybelline! 😛

The wearing power is good and it does not smudge on me. However, I must point out that this Maybelline double stretch mascara cleans off best with warm water. For once, believe the hype.

I tried everything else – cleansing oils, eye makeup removers, oils – and nothing removes ALL the mascara than just regular warm water. So, what I do is clean off my makeup with my regular makeup remover and then clean off the mascara in the shower.

Allow some warm water to run over your lashes to soften the mascara. Then (with your eyes closed) gently rub your lashes. You will feel the mascara coming off in rubbery tubes. Repeat until clean.

So for once, I have to follow instructions to get the best results 😛

A tube of Maybelline Long Extreme Double Stretch mascara retails at RM36.90 but you know the drill – Maybelline goes on sale often! 😉 For the price and performance as an everyday mascara I’d hold on to this one. For once Maybelline and I see eye(lash) to eye(lash) 😀

Pros: Lengthens lashes, No chemical fumes, Washes off easily, Brush works well and formula does not clump, Affordable

Cons: The brush is a little short and too close to the holder

Have you tried this one? Like it? Hate it? Don’t you love the purple background of the mascara pic? teeheee… 🙂

Stay beautiful

I’m not really a big fan of Maybelline’s mascaras. Tried the silver tube (forgot the name) & hate it so much. But i love their Define-A-Lash in pink tube (not available here in usual drugstores). Only RM20 and give me vavavom eye lashes (Or maybe beacuse i’m born with it :p).

      Hi Reena

I had to LOL at your last comment – brilliant! 😀 I’m not a fan of Maybelline mascara too. This is one however that seems to work. Guess that’s why Maybelline has so many different mascara to cater for all of us fussy ladies! 😉

A two-step mascara is too much trouble for an everyday effect. PASS! Thanks for the review dear!

oh, I can so imagine you eyeing the mascara with suspicion. I’ve seen that look before! :p

Ahh… I might just pick one up to try to satisfy my curiosity. I’m a Turbo Boost girl through and through… not quite keen on dual-ended mascaras but but but…

      Hi Synaesthesia

Oh this one is nothing like the Cat Eyes one! Its got a typical wand and no smell. But then perhaps it works for me so… 😉

I saw this in the ads and I’m suspicious how it works compared to their old XXL as well. Hm… I wonder if I’m going to spend RM30++ on this… 😛 Great review though!

      Hi Sue

Compared to XXL I’d say this works better because the wand isn’t as fat and the bristles wider apart. The effect too is different. Well, maybe some day when you run out of your mascara then give this one a shot 🙂

I spotted this as well today, but I don’t like double ended mascaras. Why can’t they just make both sides black?!

Did you try their Impact Express Pencil Shadow (was RM21 when I saw it)? I tried it on my hand and it glided on very smoothly and it was totally smudgeproof! My hand was bright red and I only managed to scrub off a tad bit with my tissue..

i love fiber mascara that makes my lash go va va voom in length.
    so long and flirtatious. 😛
i thought i’ve finally gotten over maybelline mascara but they just recently came up with new ones
and your post is really tempting me
my favourite from maybelline so far is the cat eye one because although its a volumn mascara, it really lengthens my lashes to the next level
