MAC Cosmetics Holiday Collection 2009 : Some thoughts

November 2, 2009 Paris B 10 Comments

I’m confused. Is MAC’s holiday aka Christmas collection for 2009 known as Magic Mirth and Mischief or is that a different line altogether? You can tell you aren’t reading the blog of a MAC Cosmetics fan when you see this LOL…

Anyway, I was in Penang over the weekend for work where I stumbled (literally) on the MAC Magic Mirth and Mischief launch. I tripped over the raised edge of the platform and it was only by sheer luck that I did not end up on my face 😛

You can read about the MAC Magic Mirth and Mischief collection on Lipglosseater where you can also see some nice clear swatches. I’m here to tell you what I think about the limited edition sets and brush sets MAC comes up with every year for the Holidays.

MAC Lip and Eye Bags – Holiday 2009 (RM150) (link)

These bags caught my eye first. Actually I was quite taken in by the lip products. The House of Mirth Deep lip bag set is nice if you like a strong lip. The lipstick is Fantasia and Get Rich Quick Dazzleglass gloss. The other lip set is a light pink in Put a Spell on you Pink Lip bag. Lipstick, gloss and pencil come in a little bag.

All thoughts of lipstick flew out of my mind the moment I saw the eye bags. Ah these are some eye bags I don’t mind having! Haha… The SA did not believe me when I told her that Melon Pigment in the Alakazam! bag is a repromote. I should know girl, I have a sample! And its gorgeous! MAC pigments are about my only weakness from MAC and to prove her wrong, I’m wearing Melon today with chocolate liner whee! 🙂

I was tempted by the Naughty Noir Eye Bag – Shimmertime pigment, Blacktrack fluidline, mini #209 liner brush and mascara. Shimmertime pigment looks amazing – a pale pinky peach shimmer I just know I can wear over anything. The rest of the products didn’t grab me though. So I’m going to dig through my pigment stash to see if I can find something to take the place of Shimmertime 😉 Otherwise, I’d have to see if they sell it separately (SA said no 😛 )

MAC Brush Bags – RM250/each (link)

Every year MAC comes up with travel size brush sets for the Holidays. Prices have gone up. They started at about RM200 and then they were RM220 are now RM250. I actually thought the ones from last year – Adoring Carmine – were decent. I personally own a set from quite a few years ago – the blush brush is almost dead but its otherwise a decent set of first brushes.

However I must profess great disappointment in MAC’s brush sets from this Holiday collection. The brushes are nowhere as large as they look in the picture – they are in fact quite small. I was fascinated by the 2nd set – that white angled brush (#187SE) and skunk brush (#168SE) looked appealing. But when I touched them, I knew I’d pass. The bristles felt plasticky and stiff and in a nutshell, felt and looked cheap. Sorry MAC lovers!

MAC Lip, Eye and Face Kits (link)

I don’t recall the prices of these but I must admit they are cute. Out of the 4 eyeshadow palettes available, only Sorceress really caught my eye. It looks a lot better in person too.

As for the face kit, Hocus Focus is  a very pretty palette to have. So pretty I was very VERY tempted to get it. 😛 The blush at the bottom is Peachykeen – a very light pink-peach blush. The 2 powders on the top are Pretty Baby and Sunsparked Pearl beauty powders – light shimmer powders that look like they would make nice highlight shades. The colours are lighter in person than in the picture. The SA told me that the palette can be used for eyeshadow too – good for multitasking eh?

MAC Holiday 2009 Magic Mirth and Mischief thoughts?

On an overall basis, I’d say that the Holiday 2009 collection is a very pretty collection. However, if you’re a MAC fan, you might find that you already own some or part of each kit MAC puts out which may be a bit of a bummer. If you’re new to MAC then this is a good way to try some of the products. The quality in the limited edition Holiday items do differ from the regular line so I won’t suggest you base your perception of MAC cosmetics just on these.

If I were getting something, I’d likely get one of the Eye Bag sets – the one with Shimmertime maybe since I already own a bit of Melon. And I’d likely get Hocus Focus face kit… IF I was getting any.

Are you getting anything from MAC’s Holiday 2009 collection? Have you seen it?

Stay beautiful,

Paris B

Usually for the holiday collections, there will be different names for the colour collection, brush sets, palettes and bags. But this year, it seems like the Magic, Mirth and Mischief name only applies to the colour collection… the rest are just called Holiday face kits / palettes / bags, etc. 😛

I’m also loving the bags!! They look so adorable! But alas, i didn’t like any of the items in them enough to justify buying any! 😀

Hmmm… so didcha get anything from the holiday collections? 😀

I went to their event at KLCC, had a free cleanser sample and a free makeover by their makeup artist.
They even push me to buy the pink lips set because there are only two left! I kinda like the lip gloss and the cute pouch but I did not buy anything because I know they always come up with those limited edition stuff, I must buy smart, not just buy anything which is stated “limited edition”~Lol

I think it’s a nice collection but nothing has really caught my eye so I’ll pass.

nothing really reeled my in either. The SE brushes are usually pretty crappy. Heck, not all of the full sized ones are great either. I got the Superdupernatural Mineralize Blush but not for “collection” sake. Just because it’s a really good color for me 🙂

Appalling right when even as a non MAC devotee you know more about MAC than the SA does? :p I’m guessing that they usually hire untrained part timers for promo areas.

just a note: for the Hocus Pocus face palette, the powder in the bottom is Pretty Baby beauty powder. the peachy-pink blush on top is Peachykeen, and the highlighter is the Sunsparked

honestly it was the only thing that really attracted me out of the whole collection, but i held back b/c Pretty Baby really doesn’t show up on me at all. a 67% hit rate for a palette isn’t quite enough for me. we’ll see if it shows up at the EL warehouse sale next year 🙂

The holiday collection this year is very pretty but I only got myself a Totally Wow! lipstick, Partial To Pink cremesheen glass and Conjure Up blush. I don’t buy MAC because of limited editions, I buy when I like something. I’ve skipped quite a number of collections this year because I don’t find a lot of them interesting or worth buying.
