Recognised those shoes? Did you cringe?
Yeah I thought so! 😀
Crocs classic design shoes have been reviled again and again by most of the fashion crowd. I’m not in the fashion crowd but I too would look askance at people wearing it, as if to say “Couldn’t you find anything better than a plastic shoe with holes?”
But its one of those things – you shouldn’t say anything until you’ve walked a mile in the other (wo)man’s shoes and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my case, I caved in about a year ago and although I only own 1 pair of the “plastic shoe with holes” I do rather like in in a perverse sort of way… even if its ugly as sin.
You see, the shoe is comfortable and the material its made out of and the fact it has holes makes it a great pair of shoes/sandals to travel with where its hot and likely to be wet. I’ve tramped all over Bangkok in these twice – I like wearing these there because I’d be fine if it rains, my feet don’t get hot and sweaty, and the soft firm shoe bed makes for a good walk and it does not slip.
Which brings me to my question: Would you wear something comfortable even if the rest of the world thinks its ugly as sin?
Now I know many would snort with derision at this point. “Yes, its all that you said, but its UGLY!!” You might exclaim. I must admit that’s the case. You risk having feet that look like it just went through a swiss cheese making factory. Crocs must have realized this too because their recent new designs look more like proper shoes than these perforated boat-like shoes and that for me, has lost its charm.
But ugly or no, fashionable or no, I still wear mine because of the comfort level. I do get complained at by friends – “Not those shoes!” – but I wear them regardless – perhaps its a bit of rebellion but its mostly for comfort. Yes I’m prepared to sacrifice a bit of looks … ok ok … a LOT of looks for comfort. 🙂
I’m not endorsing Crocs as a shoe – merely using it as a prop to tell my story. Do you own something everyone thinks is ugly but which you wear anyway because its comfortable?
I don’t expect you to agree with me on this point – in fact I’d love to know if you don’t 😀
Stay beautiful,
Paris B

I started wearing Birkinstocks when everyone thought they were ugly as sin…so yeah, I’d wear something ugly if it’s comfy 🙂

PB u need to be careful when going on escalators in one of those. i’ve seen half a pair of crocs stuck halfway through the part where an escalator ends (i don’t know the proper name for it, but i hope you get the picture) at pavilion the other day. had the wearer not acted quickly enough, his/her foot would have been fed into the escalator together with the shoe! maybe the soft plastic easily follows the form of the ridges on the escalator steps, it became stuck in between the ridges so the wearer could not step off the escalator in time. could’ve been nasty!

Thanks for all your responses everyone! I thoroughly enjoyed reading them all and no, no hard feelings at all! 😀 I like wearing my one pair of Crocs and the reason I got the Classic Mary Janes was beacuse I couldn’t wear any of the other designs – my feet are too narrow 🙂 AND I had to see what all the hype was about 🙂 My flipflops of choice are my Fitflops – comfortable and look good!

at first i thought that i’ll never over going to put them on. but now if i have to tour the malls, i prefer to walk on my olivia crocs rather than my stilettos or wedges or gladiators. just to get another excuse for still touring the mall as i’m not tired, yet. hih. so yes for comfy (BUT only with decent design. not the boat type) 🙂

I have the red suede mary janes from Crocs. They are not comfortable, but they’re pretty.

I own a pair of prima, it’s the shoes that I wore the most last year, and now it’s what I wear to go shopping. I can walk for 7 hours straight without getting achy feet! 😀
I own the ‘pasar malam’ cheap version of the original design. Wore it once, never touched it again…

Classic Crocs make me cringe.
I suppose if you wore them in black or brown they wouldn’t look too bad (they don’t, actually… on my guy friend) but I’ve seen them in horrifically bright colours. D: I wanted to gouge my eyes out with a spoon.
The other designs aren’t so bad though – the wedges and ballet flat versions look alright.
