Would you wear something comfortable even if its ugly?

September 13, 2009 Paris B 29 Comments

crocs

Recognised those shoes? Did you cringe?

Yeah I thought so! 😀

Crocs classic design shoes have been reviled again and again by most of the fashion crowd. I’m not in the fashion crowd but I too would look askance at people wearing it, as if to say “Couldn’t you find anything better than a plastic shoe with holes?”

But its one of those things – you shouldn’t say anything until you’ve walked a mile in the other (wo)man’s shoes and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my case, I caved in about a year ago and although I only own 1 pair of the “plastic shoe with holes” I do rather like in in a perverse sort of way… even if its ugly as sin.

You see, the shoe is comfortable and the material its made out of and the fact it has holes makes it a great pair of shoes/sandals to travel with where its hot and likely to be wet. I’ve tramped all over Bangkok in these twice – I like wearing these there because I’d be fine if it rains, my feet don’t get hot and sweaty, and the soft firm shoe bed makes for a good walk and it does not slip.

Which brings me to my question: Would you wear something comfortable even if the rest of the world thinks its ugly as sin?

Now I know many would snort with derision at this point. “Yes, its all that you said, but its UGLY!!” You might exclaim. I must admit that’s the case. You risk having feet that look like it just went through a swiss cheese making factory. Crocs must have realized this too because their recent new designs look more like proper shoes than these perforated boat-like shoes and that for me, has lost its charm.

But ugly or no, fashionable or no, I still wear mine because of the comfort level. I do get complained at by friends – “Not those shoes!” – but I wear them regardless – perhaps its a bit of rebellion but its mostly for comfort. Yes I’m prepared to sacrifice a bit of looks … ok ok … a LOT of looks for comfort. 🙂

I’m not endorsing Crocs as a shoe – merely using it as a prop to tell my story. Do you own something everyone thinks is ugly but which you wear anyway because its comfortable?

I don’t expect you to agree with me on this point – in fact I’d love to know if you don’t 😀

Stay beautiful,

Paris B

Hahaha….I would need to see if the ugly comfy thing is cheap or not. The crocs are not cheap. And I can get by with a comfy pair of slippers.

    lolz agree with shay~

those crocs are really *Toot* ugly
friends who wore them swear they are extremely comfortable~
but i think its different with the people who wore them. I once saw a beauty wore crocs and the crocs was like beautified by 45% more by the wearer = =.

At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What I think looks all right may be downright fugly to another. So I can’t really say.

I still think Crocs (not all of them though; just the, err, above picture :P) are ugly. But then again, I’ll be doing quite a lot of walking in BKK in December, so maybe I should just swallow my pride and don a pair? 😛

I’ve yet to crack and buy a pair. My daughter has gone through two pairs already. I was going to consider them for nursing shoes, but learned that the Worker’s Compensation Board stopped covering slips/falls or back injuries in health care professionals that wear them… Can you imagine? Apparently, it’s easy to slip and fall in them.

I work in a hospital and Crocs (the clog ones) are extremely high-fashion in the operating theatre. They are comfy for long hours standing up, can resist surgical knives or heavy equipment dropped on them, easy to wipe blood off and looked prettier than the ugly, sad, black clogs that are normally allowed in the OT. You’re definitely in the cool crowd wearing them. =D

But outside the OT, I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing it anywhere. They are other comfy+pretty footwear out there such as the Ipanema Flip Flops so I wouldn’t justify Crocs as the only comfy footwear choice out there.

Hahaha don’t kill me for saying this but i do think that the regular crocs clogs are not very nice too look at! 😛 That being said, i do own a pair of Crocs Prima, so i hope i don’t come across as being a hypocrite! hahaha!! 😛

So to answer your question, i don’t think i’ll wear something that is so ugly that it hurts me everytime i look at it! lol! It has to be “acceptably decent” and comfortable at the same time. Picky me huh! 😛

Hi, sorry …. I hate them, those classic crocs I mean. And I totally CRINGE when I see a whole family of 5 or more all wearing identical classic crocs …. what is this, the clown parade??? I agree with Liz, for comfort and chic, seriously Ipanema Gisele sandals tops the list for me, sexy yet oh-so-comfy.

My daughter owns a pair of newer pattern, light pink croc which she bought at a flea market at Solaris, very much cheaper and genuine. She wears it everywhere, sometimes even to work. I would have bought one too but couldn’t find one my size. They are actually quite pretty and not big chunky ones. I’ll definitely buy a pair the next time.

I used to wear heels all the time..like seriously…day and night…Always shop for new heels…until one day,…I earned the consequences of walking on heels..:(…I got knee pain so bad…my feet ache till I could not even go jogging anymore…:(…I never blame those heels for this pain until someone advice me so…since then, my shoe rack are filled with comfortable flats..well, not all comfortable shoes are ugly like crocs.haha..:)…Hush Puppies make comfortable shoes yet stylish..skechers…Scholl…Hawkeye..:)..you know, the one that look sporty yet stylish and comfortable…:)…but some of them are ugly. But, yeah!!…I learn my lesson, I dont mind wearing them if its ugly…as long as it comfy and safe for my limb :P.

Oooohhhh, I can’t do Crocs! Although I will admit that the “ballet flat” style is quite cute.
When I was pregnant, a friend gave me this advise: Crocs should only be for your child – ONLY for her!
Hehehe, I’m sticking to that – and I’m a heels kinda girl, anyway. The higher, the better!

I admit I was pretty curious when they fad first started but I couldn’t bring myself to walk into the store. That overpowering smell of rubber just repelled me from the entrance ^^;; My nose took a beating. On persuasion of the Boyfriend I finally did walk into the one in the Curve one day and my jaw just dropped.”You want me to pay what? For a pair of ugly slippers?” Sighs… I never bought a pair. I’m quite happy with my 30 dollar Ipanemas from 2 years ago ( even that price tag made me bulk). I’d rather have my toes expose then walk around like I was auditioning for the role of Ronald McDonald. Those shoes are huge on my size 4 feet!

I think the sandals are so overpriced in the western fashion industry.
In Thailand we have sooooo many sandals from so many brands that are stylish and comfy at the same time. Most of them are under 10USD. I have my favorite sandals that is sooooo comfy from local Thai brands ADDA and Monobologo. They are only about 5-6USD. Cheap, comfy, cute. I love my Adda sandals very much. I can walk whole day without feeling any pain on my feet. Who need Crocs?

i wear stuff which ppl think is ugly but to me, they are ok, different standards of aesthetic value i think 😛

i’ll never want something that’s not comfy because that’s just a waste of money. i do want a pair of crocs ballet flats, those look nice and since i walk quite a bit, it’s better than heels! 😛

Oh dear…u don’t have to wear the one with the holes if u’re think they’re look ugly. They still have another option for comfy shoes. U can have their wedges, I have 2 pairs of their wedges and i swear i can walk around mall for 3 hours non stop with that shoes. AT least the wedges got no holes and ‘prettier’ too. ahaha..

haha, if I must wear something comfortable, the choice is Havaianas, never Crocs. I love the buttery soft soles of Havaianas.

    Hi Paris,
Definitely Yes! I owned a pair of crocs shoe as well. It is the exactly design with yours but mine is in mixture of dark and light pink with flower-ly design. It’s more better than the original coughuglycough design. I am loving with it and it’s comfortable. =D
On that time i bought, my mum said it’s ugly. because i wear quite often and she said it’s nice and with lovely color. This shoe is worth for its price!
