Review: L’Oreal Ultra-Volume Collagene Mascara

September 1, 2009 Paris B 14 Comments

You might have noticed this new L’Oreal Ultra-Volume Collagene mascara at some L’Oreal counters although its due out only in September 2009. They seem to hide it somehow – I wish they’d showcase it better because this mascara is pretty good stuff!

l'oreal volume collagene mascara

I haven’t tried any L’Oreal mascara prior to this so I will not be able to compare. However one element that makes this a winner in my book is the fact that there is no scent – no chemical fumes, no scent nothing!

L’Oreal made this mascara to boost volume in Asian lashes with a Hydra-Collagen complex with collagen and hyalyronic acid to boost volume and retain water for plumper lashes. Honestly, I don’t know how all that works. All I know is to see how it works on my lashes.

Now for the $1 million dollar question – does it give you the Snuffleupagus lashes that Eva Longoria sports in the ads? I’ll show you in pictures – a picture speaks a thousand words yes? 🙂

I applied 2 layers as I normally do in the mornings. 1 layer is usually good enough though.

L'oreal ultra volume collagene mascara

The answer clearly is no – you don’t get Eva Longoria’s lashes. The mascara enhances your lashes – fattens them up and keeps them looking plump and visible but unless you already have thick lashes, you won’t end up looking like Eva Longoria. More’s the pity 😛

L’Oreal made the brush head for this mascara HUGE. Now, I’m always complaining about how big mascara brush heads are a no-no for me. I will similarly complain this time, but less vehemently. For some reason, I don’t get mascara smudged all over my eye with this giant brush. Perhaps its the shape? Or maybe the bristles are longer. The big brush head does mean its a little harder to get to the little lashes but if you are careful and persevere you get there 😛 That said, if you have small eyes, you might just want to skip this – that brush head is a monster!

You may also want to make sure you wipe off the excess from the brush when you remove it from the tube. Perhaps its the shape or design but it picks up quite a lot of excess. Another point to note is that it can apply a little clumpy but is easily fixed if you don’t apply too much. 1 to 2 layers is about right. Anything more and you risk spiders… and I hate spiders! 😛

It does add volume to my anorexic lashes, holds up the curled lashes and does not smudge throughout the day. It does not add much length but I’m not fussed. I haven’t been this happy about a drugstore brand mascara since… well… never! 😛

The L’Oreal Ultra-Volume Collagene mascara retails at RM49.90 at all L’Oreal counters. I believe there’s a special package out now with a heated lash curler and the eye-lip makeup remover for RM69.90. If you see that, grab it! Its a steal!!

Pros: Adds volume as promised, Inexpensive mascara, Smudge proof

Cons: Brush head may be too big for smaller eyes and shorter lashes, Potential to clump

How are the Malaysians coping back at work after the long weekend? 🙂 I’m just barely getting through the day after 3 days of sleeping in late – in fact I was up late this morning… *snore*

Stay beautiful,

Paris B

Hi! I have the same mascara and after the 10th use the brush does get clumpy. I tried washing the brush head and it helps quite a bit. Because mine was getting to the point that even the first coat was spidery.

I had my review on this mascara too… bought this mascara in the package. No idea how to use the heated curler as I’m too timid and scare my clumsiness will accidentally burn my skin. Hahaha…. Personally, I like this mascara as it’s smooth and easy to apply despite the big brush gave me some problems… I’m agreed that this mascara did not gives me Eva Longoria’s lashes too but I like how it allows my lashes to be seen… hahaha.. normally, my lashes would just hiding somewhere no matter how i comb them with mascaras…

      Hi Synaesthesia

Yay glad you like it too! I didn’t get the heated curler – i’m afraid I’d burn off all my lashes! 😛

Hmm..doesn’t really look appealing to me. Like you mentioned, it doesn’t lengthen and I think it’s very clumpy. Anyway, you can actually buy other good mascaras for that price such as maybelline and majolica majorca.

      Hi Sarah

Its a volumizing not lengthening mascara. Personally I’m liking it plus I’m allergic to Majolica Majorca and Maybelline mascara has too strong chemical fumes for me. Still, it might not be for everyone 🙂

      Hi Lynn

Is that the sort that wrap around your lashes and wash off? I’ve never tried them too 🙂

I use this together with Maybelline’s mascara for the length and the result is pure awesomeness 😀 Length and the volume!
