Review : Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque

September 17, 2009 Paris B 31 Comments

My facial skin has been feeling a bit dull and uneven of late. So, when my eyes fell on the new Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque I decided to slap it on and see where it took me.

kiehls rare earth masque

The instructions say to apply a thin layer on the skin. The reason I suspect is because it can be drying. The new Kiehl’s Rare Earth skincare line does after all have Amazonian White Clay as its key ingredient. Clay in skincare has been used traditionally to absorb oil and is used usually in masks and this Amazonian White Clay is known to remove bacteria, toxins and excess oil and dead cells that can clog skin and result in enlarged pores. The other key ingredients are oatmeal to absorb oil and aloe vera to soothe the skin.

Because clay can be drying, the Kiehl’s Rare Earth skincare line is tailored for those with normal-oily skins. The sales assistant did tell me the rest of the products in the line may not be suitable for me. I’m glad she was honest and not out for a quick sale! 🙂

I’ve worked out that I’m combination with slightly dry skin on my cheeks but I decided to risk this mask anyway. I’m rather glad I did because I like how my skin felt after using this mask

kiehls rare earth masque

I first applied a thin layer of the mask on my skin avoiding the eye area. After about 10-15 minutes, once its dry to the touch, I rinse it off and do not use another cleanser. My skin immediately feels that little bit smoother and pores look visibly smaller. I’d been battling a stubborn pimple and I think the clay mask seems to have helped a little to dry it out. I’m going to slap on the clay daily right on the spot to get rid of it 😛 (Update: It did not go away totally but the mask helped dry it out so it was not so obvious)

I decide to be a bit of a masochist and left off applying lotion and cream for a spell after washing my face. To my surprise, my skin did not feel overly tight as it usually does after a clay mask. I did however use a hydrating toner lotion and a heavier night cream to compensate.

I’m keeping this for use once or twice a week as necessary. I like how my skin feels after using it and if its helping minimize pores or deep clean my pores, that’s great! Heaven knows how much gunk there is to clean. If you have very dry skin, you might want to steer clear of this one.

A 5.0z/142g tub of the Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque retails at Kiehl’s stores for RM95 or in the USA for US$22. You only use very little so one tub can last you close to a year, I’m guessing. Well worth it! The other products in the line targeted at those with oily skin are Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser (RM90/150ml), Rare Earth Pore Refining Tonic (RM100/250ml), Rare Earth Pore Minimizing Lotion (RM130/75ml)

Pros: Skin feels smooth and clean, Pores are visibly minimized

Cons: Can be drying so its not for those with dry skin

Pick up the Kiehl’s Times!

While you are at the Kiehl’s store, don’t forget to pick up the Kiehl’s Times and if you buy something, make sure you sign up as a member to get it delivered to you. I get mine every month chockfull of news of new items in the store or reminding me of items in their current lineup I could take note of.

2 items that’s got me intrigued in the September 2009 edition is the Centella Skin Calming facial cleanser and Centella Recovery Salve both targeted at sensitive skin. I’m going to have to check those out the next time I’m in the store.

Stay beautiful,

im going to get this after my dermalogica clay mask runs out. the derma costs me 120+ for 75ml..so this is definitely much more worth it. i walked in to kielhs to check, was told by the SA that we could actually use this overnight, of coz, its for topical treatment esp for acne areas. and also, whenever i use clay mask, i usually use a moisturizing toner prior to clay mask, definitely no tight feeling at all after washing off the clay mask!

      Hey prettybeautiful,

Ooh! I won’t use it overnight all over your face! But topically, yes it might be a good idea. I’ll try it and see! 😀 And thanks for the tips about using a moisturizing toner before mask!

I’m actually interested in the Epidermal Re-Texturizing Micro-Dermabrasion and Over-Night Biological Peel… I have acne scars, am wondering if these 2 can help reduce the marks….
I receive their Kiehl’s Times too, and so many products wanting to try every month 🙂

Woohoo~ I am so happy you said they give out samples.

But will they show me some kind of face if I go in and request for samples only? :p

      Hi Celine

I can’t speak for all stores but just be nice and ask for a sample to try. Kiehl’s usully oblige as its their policy to allow people to try before they buy.

This mask sounds great. Thanks for the review! I wonder if they’ll have a deep cleansing mask that’s suitable for my drier skin. need to go check out.

      Hey Connie

I don’t recall a deep cleansing mask for dry skin. Usually deep cleansing masks are drying, from my experience. This one is not bad though. Maybe try a sample? It’ll be fun for an FOTD anyway hehe…

I tried on this mask last night. Instruction said put a ‘thin’ layer of face for max 10 mins, but i felt that it dried up very fast. so i washed it away in less than 5 mins. Result is good thou. skin feel smooth. After that i put on lifting serum and hydrogel. This morning woke up, skin feel smooth and hydrating.

p/s: the mask is the free sample 5ml i got from Mid Valley Kiehl.

      Hey CY

Yeah it did dry up a little fast so I put on a slightly thicker layer. Lovely results eh?

I have the Centella Skin Calming Facial Cleanser. And I really don’t like it. =((( Think it was a waste of money. Was sort of cheated, as it irritates my sensitive skin, but the SA said this is good. Plus, I don’t like the texture, like hard solid dumped in liquid, and the solid clumps together. It’s thin, but not easy to spread.

About the sensitive skin part, I was told later on a forumer that Centella range is actually not for sensitive skin. If I remember correctly, the forumer said Normal/Combination skin. So of course, it depends on person. You may like it very much for all we know. =))

I bought that in a big haste because I was talked over by the SA. I only went in to get a bottle of toner, but there was a promotion to get 2 bottles of anything.

Since Kiehl’s is very generous with samples, maybe can get sample first? I don’t mind pressing out samples for anyone who wants to try, since I already shelved my bottle, and don’t intend to finish it. It’s a few months old though, plus send over to M’sia is more expensive than a local mail.

I use this mask and love it! I also use the facial fuel eye de-puffer and look great everyday! Other than that I use Chanel Precision face wash daily, I have normal to oily skin and this combo is great. Just put on SPF15 in the AM and I’m good to go!

It does leave the skin with a tingling effect. I’d suggest you take it back to the store and tell them of your experience.

I have normal (combination) skin which isn’t exactly dry or oily. I use this mask once or twice weekly depending on when I remember to use it. I also use the rare earth lotion after toning and before my sunblock during the day. I’d say that the lotion is the best. It really helps regulate sebum. Persons with dry skin can still benefit from the use of this lotion as well provided that a good serum is applied beforehand and sunblock is applied after. Just don’t use the lotion before sleep/in the evening as it isn’t hydrating enough for night time use. Every since I used the mask and lotion, my acne prone skin has improved a lot and my skin literally glows and I’ve been receiving compliments

Hey girls (and guys?) I have tried this product and I love it. I have a very oily nose and my pores get clogged frequently on that location. This masque soaks all that nasty gunk off and it makes my complexion so much clearer. My face just looks fresher and feels fresher after I use it. I’ve never felt my face feel softer. Caution though: if you have dry skin this product might not be for you. Most Rare Earth products are amazing though. Con: they are out of stock frequently on their site and Im not sure who carries it in my area (Phoenix Metro area)

No, you should not. It can feel a tiny bit warming and ‘tight’ as it dries. But it should not hurt.
