Everyday Minerals Flat Top brush vs Lumiere Cosmetics Kabuki brush

September 2, 2009 Paris B 27 Comments

Woohoo! As requested a while ago, here’s a showdown challenge between the Everyday Minerals Flat Top brush and the Lumiere Cosmetics Kabuki brush. Both are highly rated for mineral foundation application.

EDM flat top vs Lumiere Kabuki

But how do they rate against each other?

Note: I do not use mineral foundation. The challenge was done using 2-way powder foundation.

Everyday Minerals flat top feels softer on the skin

Both brushes are lovely and soft on the skin. However, the Everyday Minerals brush feels just a touch softer on my skin. The Lumiere kabuki is a little floppier but its also nice – its a matter of which you prefer.

Everyday Minerals flat top applies with more coverage

Both brushes are dense and pick up powder well. Its advisable to tap off excess before applying. However, I find the flat top brush picks up more colour and applies foundation with more coverage.

If you want something more sheer the Lumiere kabuki is advisable. It deposits powder and colour more evenly. The Everyday Minerals flat top deposits colour more heavily but still less so than a sponge.

Lumiere Cosmetics Kabuki buffs foundation better

If you use the swirl tap and buff method for applying mineral foundation, I personally feel the Lumiere Cosmetics Kabuki works better. It buffs foundation into skin better and diffuses the powder better too.

The Everyday Minerals flat top brush, as I noted above, can deposit colour or powder heavily on one point of your skin and you have to work quickly to diffuse it or risk it looking a little patchy.

Both the Lumiere Kabuki and Everyday Minerals Flat Top are good brushes

At the end of the day, because I already own both, I use them interchangably without too much fuss. I’d say either is a good buy because some people might prefer the flat top while others prefer a round top kabuki.

The Everyday Minerals Flat Top is cheaper, but some may not like how it works especially if you don’t like very full coverage for powder and it takes a while to get used to using a flat top brush.

Both brushes are available at LovingMinerals.com so yes they are available in Malaysia for quite an affordable price! You can read my more comprehensive review for the Everyday Minerals flat top brush and the Lumiere Cosmetics Kabuki brush by following the links 🙂

If you have used either or both and would like to share your thoughts on which works better for you, do please! I’d love to hear what others think of these 2 brushes 🙂

Stay beautiful,

Paris B

Thanks for sharing this Paris, I just recently bought a mineralised foundation and a long handled Kabuki Brush, tell you the truth I have no idea if it’s good or could be better.

Now i might look into the flat head as well on my Need More coverage days 🙂

I don’t have Lumiere but I find EDM picks up the foundation from compact powders quite alot. I prefer to use these brushes with loose form of foundation/powders. 🙂

      Hi Sue

Yep the EDM does pick up a lot which is why some people may not like it as much but I find that once you blend it out, its nice for more coverage days 🙂

I like both, I could not decide which one was better, so I made my sister get the flat top while I got the Kabuki! Haha!

      Hi Synaesthesia

Just swipe the kabuki brush over the foundation and apply on your skin as normal. It picks up more than a sponge but applies sheerer. The flat top does work for liquid too but its hell to wash out! 😛 I prefer the Duo Fibre for liquid foundation

Both brushes can actually be bought in Malaysia for a cheaper price, but first you’ll need to sign up for a Lowyat Forum account, then search for the correct thread to place your order. The EDM flat top’s only RM35 at one of the threads. 😀

Too bad Loving Minerals aren’t restocking on the Lumiere brush set any time soon though. Well, too bad for me that is. When I found out about it they already ran out of stock. 🙁

Paris, do you have the EDM long handled kabuki brush as well? If you do, is it worth getting both the flat top and kabuki?

      Hi Electronicfly

I don’t shop on Lowyat so I prefer going through Lovingminerals 🙂 As for the EDM long handle kabuki, I just ordered it from lovingminerals today! So lets wait till it gets here and I’ll review it 😀

Whoa! You’ve answered my question even before I asked ! LOL.

I have the EDM FT, it’s sooo soft. I use it for my mineral foundation.
Am thinking of getting the Kabuki for loose powder, but I think I’ll get EDM’s long handled Kabuki because it’s cheaper 😛

I bought the Everyday Mineral’s one from LM because I like the fact that the handle is longer. I use it on days when I want to get a smoother coating of my compact powder foundation. Sometimes sponges can be a little thick on certain days. I also like using it to buff my loose powder on when I’m setting my foundation. Now… if the Lumiere one can with a longer handle… hehehe…

    wow thanks for the comparison!
    its good to know.
but lumiere is pretty expensive. 🙁
haha doesn’t effect me much since i barely even touch my EDM Flat Top Brush now.
i do wonder how does EDM Long Handled Kabuki compare to Lumiere’s Kabuki thou.
since both of them have rounded edge. 😛

You’re welcome and I’ll compare the EDM long handle to the Lumiere Kabuki soon once I get my EDM!

Thanks for this post, finally someone did this comparison. I have the EDM flat top but not the Lumiere one. EDM kabuki is one great brush too and it is great for days when I want lighter coverage since flat top gives heavier coverage. Maybe you can try this out someday 🙂

Hmm..this post makes me wanna get EDM flat top brush although I already have Lumiere’s baby kabuki. The baby kabuki does take me awhile to cover my whole face and this is a perfect excuse to get another brush ^_^

      Hi Adrianna

I haven’t tried the baby kabuki – I thought it might be too small especially since I don’t use mineral foundation a lot 🙂

I love the EDM flat-top brush. Haven’t used it in a while now since I don’t use mineral foundation anymore. Your post reminded me of it. Time to take it out and use it on my powder instead 🙂
