Definite Cosmetic Water in Penang and Thoughts on Estee Lauder Blockbuster Set 2009

September 26, 2009 Paris B 14 Comments

The weekend came round so quickly this time I almost felt like I was running Back to the Future! We only had a 3 day work week here in Malaysia – awesome right?! 😀 I did all my chores last week and this week I’m going to relax on the couch with the final installment of Harry Potter – I know I’m late but better late than never! 🙂

On the cosmetics front, Definite Cosmetics launches a new skincare product – Hydra Swiss Spa Cosmetic Water – and they are doing so in Gurney Plaza Penang from September 25-27, 2009. I love how they have taken something big like this out of Kuala Lumpur, even if it means I can’t check it out just yet! 😀

definite

So if you’re in Penang, drop by Gurney Plaza and check it out and get a backstage makeover while you’re at it.

For those in Kuala Lumpur, it would appear that things are a little quiet on the sale front. I’ve had a request to talk about the Estee Lauder Blockbuster 2009 set. So since I have nothing much else to report, here are my thoughts on the set.

Estee Lauder Blockbuster Set 2009 – RM220 with every RM230 purchase

el-blockbuster

This is an annual Limited Edition Estee Lauder offering that squeezes over RM1,800 worth of products into 1 traincase for you to take home for just about RM450 (Pay only RM200 for the set with every purchase of RM230). I saw it at the counter and played with it a little.

I’d say the Estee Lauder Blockbuster Set is a good buy if you don’t already have a ton of makeup or if you’d like to split it up and share with friends or family. Some more enterprising women even break it up and sell on ebay or various online auction/sales sites.

What I liked

I liked the 4 lipsticks – all 4 of them! I’ve always like the creamy texture of Estee Lauder lipsticks. The blush palette too was calling out my name. The 3 blushes looked so perfect and the palette is just the right size for toting around.

The gold pouch is a perfect size for carrying around too and it looks lush and bling! I’d just get these if it was sold in a mini-pack! 😀

What I did not like

What I did not like was the 15 colour eyeshadow palette. The colours looked meh and to someone new to makeup, it will just be too confusing. For those with a reasonable amount of makeup, you’re likely to just toss it aside as the texture of the shadows too are rather blah and hard.

The brushes can be passed on. The bristles were stiff and felt scratchy to my fingers and the shapes were all strange. Not even brushes I’d use at a pinch, sorry EL!

What I’m ambivalent about

The red traincase is gorgeous but its just one giant suitcase inside so its not so practical to tote things around in.

The mascara and eye makeup remover is a pretty decent deal. Not having tried either, I’d hazard a guess that now would be a good time to.

The 3 eyeliner pencils too look alright – black, silver and gold. I used to use the EL liner pencil in black – smudged a little but otherwise alright so I’m not overly crazy nor fussed about them.

So those are my thoughts on the Estee Lauder Blockbuster set 2009. Overall, it is a good deal as you get a ton of cosmetics for a very small price. Get this if you want to break it up for gifts or be entrepreneurial or if you’re a collector. If you’re just curious, think about why you want it and check it out in person first to make sure you like what you will be buying. Remember you have to spend at least RM230 on Estee Lauder products first to qualify for the purchase so be prepared to shell out at least RM500.

I just realised that I’ve never bought a Blockbuster set before! :O Have you?

Happy weekend!

my brother’s friend once bought me a blockbuster EL set while she was studying in the US. over in the states, their packages/gift sets are more sincere as they do not force you to buy a product to enjoy any benefits (PWP). yes, the brushes are not of good quality if you’re used to your kabuki brushes 😉

i would so love to get this set because of the various eye-colours they have there but i find that RM500 is a little too much for someone who doesn’t use any EL products 🙁

      Hi Juan

You said it! If you don’t use any EL products, it would be way more expensive than you expect.

I read about this set on newspaper last few weeks.. kinda interested with the set but like what Juan said, it is a bit expensive for someone who doesn’t use EL products.. I just want to buy the set, but before that I have to spend RM230 first.. So, I’m still considering about it..
(I love the gold pouch too!)

      Hi Jean

If you have a friend or your mum uses EL then you could perhaps share it 🙂

I love EL’s blockbuster!! I’ve collected the previous 2 and despite the colour payoff’s not that great, I still find myself reaching for it for those toned down looks 🙂 I am still lemming for it but I’ve burst my budget for this month…*looks painfully at wallet*

      Hi Jessica

Aww… From experience the blockbuster sets don’t sell out that quickly so perhaps you still can get yours next month? 😉

I think, it was year 2007 I got the EL blockbuster as a bday gift.. I gave most away.. The eyeshadow was, well, not nice 😛 the colours was shimmery n din appear well on my skin n not lasting.. even the lipsticks, it was creamy n the colour not appearin on my lips.. i kept the blusher palette, eye liner and mascara which, i like 🙂 i was tempted to get this blockbuster but then, its too costly..

      Hi ali3nated

Strange you should say the lipsticks didn’t show up. I’ve always liked the creaminess and opaque texture of EL’s lipsticks 🙂

I love EL products! This will be my fourth set of Blockbusters.! 4 years in a roll. I love the eye shadows they look beautiful and stay all day. The lipstick is also wonderful it lasts, moisturizes great.! If you haven’t tried it you should. This is most def. for people who “know” how to use makeup the “right way”. Not for amatures lol

I find most people who complain about the blockbuster usually don’t own it. This is my 3rd set and I like all of them. Just finished my 2007 eyeshadow pallette completely. I have started on a couple of colors of the 2009 pallete. The browns and vanilla colors are very nice. If I want darker colors, I just add my bobbi brown or elizabeth arden to it. The lipsticks are very moist, not very longlasting but I dont mind reapplying as I hate drying lipsticks. The cleanser is easy to use and comes with a pump. The two mascaras, one is a base n the other is a black, I think. The eyeliners this year is a much improved version over the 2007 as they are softer and easier to use. I use bobbi brown gel liner for top and EL liner for bottom of my eyes. Thank God no more awful lipliner! I miss the 4 litle gloss tubes though I gained the full size cleanser in exchange. The blusher set lacks a bronzer which I love in the 2007 set. Other than this little gripes I love the set a lot and the gorgeous red case! RM220 is a steal as my bobbi brown eyeshadows cost Rm80 a pop! The brushes are completely useless in makeup but the large ones are good for brushing away excess eyeshadow that falls on my face. None of the brushes are designed for makeup applicaton a the hairs are way too long! The gold pouch is really very beautiful, almost good enough for an evening out!

Yes, the blusher set is really great for toting around! Just took it out and compared with my 2007 blusher. This packagaing is so much better and looks like their regular products rather than a EL. I am using the EL 2007 huge and heavy blusher set for home and this 2009 darling for toting around! The colors matches my Bobbi Brown eyeshadows to a T!.

Luckily I bought 2 sets this year. The 15 eyeshadow set just dont last! EL eyeshadows are not very pigmented and mostly pastel shades except for their brown and dark amethyst shades. After a couple of months (since Dec 09), I have hit pan on the sea glass, vanilla and honey drop eyeshadows!

Blushes on the other hand is quite lasting. Still using the 2007 set of blush. Arlready tried Tiger Eye, Passion Fruit, Crystal Pink and Crystal Baby lipsticks. Really good value if you want to try all the colors without paying full price!

The take it away eye makeup remover is not as good as my loreal gentle eye makeup remover though. I feel it is a bit drying. The cleansing lotion is great.

Both brown and silver artist eye pencils are great. Brushes still suck in the 2009 version. As for the train case, it is soft and light this year, compared with the solid cases of 2007 and 2008. a negative for me.
