Review: MAC Porcelain Pink Mineralized Skin Finish (MSF)

August 10, 2009 Paris B 25 Comments

porcelain pink MSF

Ok so my first MAC purchase after many many years and did I like it?

Would you be surprised if I said yes? 🙂

Yes I do like the MAC Porcelain Pink MSF (Mineralized Skin Finish) powder. It could be more pigmented, but hey! Its not a blush so I’m not fussed. At a pinch, it does show up a little on my skin.

I don’t know what I am in MAC, but I take Lancome Maquiliquide foundation in BO-01, Diorskin Nude foundation in 010 Ivory, Paul & Joe powder foundation in 11 and pretty much most of the lighter foundation colours. One of these days, I’ll get myself colour matched to MAC.

I have no swatches on my hand – it shows up too light. On medium-darker skin tones, Porcelain Pink will show up only as a highlighter. The nice thing is that its not glittery like some of the other MSF I saw. It imparts a nice shimmer if you use a large fluffy brush to dust it on your skin. And it has a lovely way of evening out skin imperfections so you look like you have perfect glowy skin. Kid you not – show you below!

Use Porcelain Pink alone as a highlighter blush

Dusted on its own over foundation, there is a slight sheen to the skin – nice for days when you need less makeup on yet want a glow to your cheeks. I use a more compact brush – mine is the Anna Sui Flat Top brush which is discontinued – and apply it starting from my cheekbones and use the remnants along the sides of my face. There is slight colour and glow. But don’t over do it or you risk looking like an oil slick.

Use Porcelain Pink over pink blush to make the color pop!

However, the MAC Porcelain Pink MSF really comes into its own when dusted OVER a light pink or even peach blush. I usually apply a light pink blush like Benefit Dandelion, then use a large fluffy brush (my Sonia Kashuk Powder brush is perfect for this) and dust on Porcelain Pink over the blush starting from my cheekbones and then use the remnants along my face and hairline. It brings out the pink in the blush and brightens the face yet is quite subtle so its not overly shiny.

Here is a picture approximation of what I mean. Depending on the colour on your monitor you may or may not see the difference. Both were taken on different days under different lighting.

mac porcelain pink swatch

Picture on the left has more accurate skin colour, picture on the right looks strangely pink because of camera glitches but shows up the cheeks better.

Dammit! I’m raving about a MAC product! 😛 It tells you I’m fair when it comes to likes and dislikes eh? 😛 Hehe…

What are the cons? It feels grainy to the touch and its limited edition and expensive at RM115. Oh and you won’t like it if you are darker than I am or want to use it as a blush because seriously folks, the MSF is not a blush so don’t knock it for not performing like one.

Do I need more MSF after this one? No I don’t. I’m happy with just one 🙂

If you’ve tried using the MAC Mineralized Skin Finishes, which one’s your fave? Do you own Porcelain Pink too and do you have other tips on using this?

Stay beautiful,

Paris B

This one looks sooo lovely on you Paris!! I like it both ways, whether used alone (the glow is so lovely!!) or paired with Benefit Dandelion!!

Although i’m probably a borderline MAC fanatic (ok, who am i kidding! lol!), i don’t own any of them MSFs! But you’re making me regret a little for not getting this one!! haha!! 😛

Have a wonderful week ahead Paris!! 😀

      Hi Jenn

You don’t have MSF?! But I thought they were a cult classic! Hehe… Nevermind – next time eh? 😉 And you have a good week ahead too!!

    It looks great on you!

i feel a little sad for not getting this, but I guess it’ll be repromoted? 😛

Some MSF really can be blush on their own! Which I quite like, ahaha! i like my face stuff to be a bit more versatile!

      Hi Plue

I’m sure Porcelain Pink will turn up again – this is the 3rd repromote I think… I find the MSF too shimmery for blush which is why I’m glad this isn’t 😉

I was at MAC the other day and looking at Porcelain Pink too… I’ve already had Perfect Topping MSF from Sugarsweet collection. I found that Porcelain Pink is similar to Perfect Topping, which stops me from getting it. I love Perfect Topping as highlighter but with light hand otherwise it’ll makes me look like a disco ball, which I’d tried… Hahaha… other than Porcelain Pink, Colourcraft collections MSFs are dark and expensive at RM115.

      Hi Synaesthesia

I guess if you have something similar then Porcelain pink is not a must have. I don’t and I doubt I’ll ever get anymore LOL

whoa! PB has fallen to the wiles of MAC 🙂 i was pretty tempted to get Porcelain Pink, but i couldn’t imagine ever finishing up my Perfect Topping MSF from the Sugarsweet collection. Perfect Topping is really really subtle and not metallic at all, and has a smooth, fine texture, unlike the Colourcraft MSF’s. I’d say out of all the Colourcraft MSF’s Porcelain Pink was definitely the best pick of the lot. i’ve generally not been a fan of highlighters before this, but PT has definitely converted me. i just wish all MSF’s were this subtle and glowy instead glittery and metallic. le sigh.

      Hi Jooj

Hehe… Just this once I’ll rave about MAC 😉 But I do agree with you – the reason I never bothered about the MSF before was because they were all so shiny – there’s just something wrong with walking around looking like an oil slick

Wew, you can really pull it off PB! It looks very lovely on you.
I was so excited when Colour Craft collection came out, but it’s quite a disappointment to me so I didn’t get anything haha.
Great trick there on applying it on top of Dandelion ^_^

This looks amazing on you! And you know what? This is literally the ONLY MAC product that I’ve been jonesing for a while now–didn’t know that it was relaunched! Did I miss the boat again?? Seems pricey though for a MAC product. But I’ve been itching to buy some makeup since it’s been forever!

      Hey Monstro

It is pricey but considering I NEVER spend any money at MAC I guess its alright 😉

It looks really pretty on you! 🙂 I only have 3 MSF, Petticoat, Brunette and Smooth Merge. My favourite is Petticoat. I can wear it on any blushes I have. I wear the other two as blushes.

      Hi Amanda

I’d read a lot of good things about Petticoat too! But they haven’t repromoted it recently have they? Or perhaps I’m mistaken…

Wow!! Looks like more and more people are into MSFs…well, at least most of my friends are starting to….but sadly most of them are limited editions. By the time I get some new recommendations from my friends, most of them are already OOS….one of them is the Petticoat MSF!

      Hi Vonvon

Just this once for me 🙂 I did check out Petticoat before but found it too pink and too shimmery – I’m happy that Porcelain Pink is just what it is 🙂
