Have you ever had the problem when your concealer or foundation feels too thick? Or when you apply it, it feels and looks a little cakey?
I have that problem sometimes with the Lancome Effacernes concealer and Ayu asked what I meant when I said that I’d warm it up with my fingers before I apply.
How I warm up my concealer is like this:-
- Squeeze a dab of concealer on the back of my left hand
- Use my fingers of my right hand and rub the concealer back and forth. You’ll feel it have more slip due to the warmth of your fingers
- Dab to apply
This thins out the concealer so you don’t end up putting cream that’s too thick on your face which can result it looking cakey and fake and cause it to settle into fine lines.
This tip works with most cream based concealers in a pan e.g. Boi-Ing or the Revlon Age-Defying cream concealer; stick concealer or thick foundation too. I do the same thing whenever I encounter thick creamy texture. My concealers and foundation go a much longer way too 😉
Do you do the same thing? Does it work for you? Do you have another trick to share for thinning out thick concealer or foundation? 🙂
Stay beautiful,
Paris B

Hi Jenn
Perhaps its just that you’ve been using concealer of the right texture for you! 😉

Yay- great minds! 🙂

Whenever I want a less thicker foundation, I use MAC Fix+ to thin out my foundation. ^_^ Add few drop of FIx+ into my foundation and use foundation brush to apply. ^_^

Hi Skylarkz
Thanks for that tip!

I do the same thing!
I prefer to warm up all my liquid face products especially my bb cream.
You get a less cake-y effect if you warm it up behind your hand. 🙂

Hi Lynn
Yep! What you say is quite true – it sinks into the skin better too!
Shanghainese Dumpling says
Yeah I do the same thing too, but when I use a past type you can try to use hair drier to blow on it to warm it up
ParisB says
Hi Shanghainese Dumpling
Hairdryer! I didn’t think of that! But won’t it dry out?

What I learn from Benefit Flawless make-up work shop is:
First, we can dip our finger into warm water, dry it, den use the warm finger to rub the concealer on your another hand (like u do).
I think it’s quite troublesome cause need to prepare warm water..
But they also mentioned that we can just do it in a simple way, which is the method you use~^^

Hi Jean
Thanks for the tips. I’d skip the warm water too because its so hard to prepare it since most of us don’t have hot water in our bathroom taps. But if we did, then its worth trying.

good one Paris! I usually cup my face after application to give it an all-over warmth…

Hi Jessica
That’s another good tip! I do that too when I apply liquid foundation so it sets better. 🙂

I am 70 yrs old, i like to use a little foundation to even out color but everything I have tried, looks cakey……..And I look worse then if I use nothing at all……at my age it seems that everything I use shows my wrinkles and flaws more…..I know I cant hide them, but would like to minimies them if possible thank you

Hi Donna
Perhaps you could try a lighter water based foundation? The Lancome Maquiliquide is very light as is Diorskin Nude. In the alternative you could try tinted moisturizer or mixing some foundation with moisturizer so its lighter.

I’ve never warmed up my concealers either. And I’ve stopped putting concealer on because it totally looks cakey and yucky. This is a good tip though that I will have to try. Thanks so much!

My skin is acne prone, so I try to avoid using finger to apply my concealer. I just use a brush to get a little bit of concealer, then hold it for couple seconds under the light.
