Review : Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner

July 20, 2009 Paris B 78 Comments

When I first saw the Maybelline gel eyeliner, I was reminded strongly of the Kate gel eyeliner. It must have been the packaging and the brush that is included in the set. So, I was rather worried at first because you see, the Kate gel eyeliner I have has a very strong chemical scent I truly dislike. It also did not last long and was just basically one failure after another. The only thing I liked was the brush. I think I’ve tossed the liner.

I’m happy to report that the Maybelline gel eyeliner is anything but a failure! The first thing I did when I opened the tub was to take a healthy sniff. No scent = good! The second thing I did was to test the included brush. Tapered, dense and fairly stiff synthetic bristles make for a good liner brush. I was already fairly impressed. The next test came how it applied. The Maybelline gel eyeliner is a nice creamy gel so it applied very smoothly. It was easy to pick up colour and to apply it. Here are my tips for applying gel eyeliner.

It was easy to get a nice line near to my lashes and a nice winged flick at the outer edge of the lid. I have Black which is a dark dark black – just how I like my liners. Upon applying, it can take a couple of seconds to dry, so don’t blink too much or it might transfer.

Once applied, it lasted on me the whole day without smudging so I’m giving this the thumbs up! The Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner retails at RM39.90 at all Maybelline counters. It comes in Black, Brown and Blue (Limited Edition).

You know, since gel eyeliners dry out eventually I might just switch over to the Maybelline gel liner once my Bobbi Brown gel liners dry out for good. It performs just as well for me, and costs much less! Now Maybelline, pretty please make some nice metallic colours and I’m a convert! 🙂

Pros: Inexpensive, Longlasting, No Smudge, Good dark colour, Useful brush, No scent

Cons: The metal cover looks strange, Takes a few seconds to dry

Have you tried the Maybelline gel liner? Do you have any thoughts on this? I’m rather taken by the thought of having a blue liner 😀

Stay beautiful,

Paris B

      Hi Monstro

I’ve never tried the L’oreal HiP liners so I can’t compare sorry! 🙁 I’m sure you’d be too busy running after baby to put on makeup!

I usually don’t wear eye makeup cos I hate removing at the end of the day. I can’t put on eyeliner without looking like a raccoon or Amy Winehouse 😛 Putting it is one thing, removing is another…

    Anyway, thanks for the review!

Thanks for the review! I’ll definitely go and check this out. My dark brown Bobby Brown eyeliner is dried up and I’ve only managed to get a green and a silver Mac fluidline from the warehouse sale last week.

By the way, I notice that the staying power of my Bobby Brown eyeliner has reduced tremendously ever since it has shown signs of drying up. Anyone has a tip or two to share on how to revive the drying up pot?

Hi, I made a comparison of the Maybelline gel eyeliner with a Filipino local product, Fanny Serrano. Please check it out on my blog. Thanks for a good review and pictures!

Have you try to heat your dried out gel liner?
I put them on the microwave for 15″ or more (just remember to make it in several heating, instead in 1 long heating).
    Or using my straightening iron.
The gel would turn to creamy again.

      Hi MPie

Thanks for the tip. Yes I’ve tried it but do be warned that it will dry out even faster after heating repeatedly.

Hi. I just tried Maybelline Gel eyliner and LOVED It. I had a problem with my eyeliner not staying on all day and it seemed to flake. I had to constantly re-apply to get the blackest line I could. I have not tried any other gel eyeliners, but this one is BY FAR the best. It stays on all day. The only con, you have to purchace makeup remover, but if this stays on ALL day.. i will buy LOADS of makeup remover!

Hello! May I know where to get these in th Philppines? And do they run when for example tears or water touches it?

It does not run at all for me. I suppose you could look at the Maybelline counters to see if they stock it in the Phillippines but I’m not sure

    Hello,
Thanks so much for your thoughts on the Maybelline gel liner. I do have a question though. Can this gel liner be applied to the waterline of the eye?

The control of a pencil, and the intensity of a liquid. You have just gotta LOVE IT!! This is my favorite liner yet, and I’ve tried them all. Stila has nice colors, and can double as a shadow, but should I go to sleep with my Stila liner on, I have to remove it, and start fresh the next morning. Lasting drama lasts, and looks as fresh as when I applied it the next morning. Plus it’s half the price of Stila!!!

    Hi Paris,

I bought myself a tub of the gel eyeliner and it was so difficult to remove them. The area around my eyes got so red and painful from excessive rubbing in an attempt to remove the eyeliner. What do you use to remove this eyeliner?

I use a waterproof makeup remover – the one from L’oreal is not bad. Or i use cleansing oil and it removes without problems. I clean the brush about once a week with the rest of my brushes. I use baby shampoo but you can use a brush cleaner.

This is my first time using gel eyeliner and I’m wondering whether you wash the brush every time after you used it? What then do you use to wash the gel off the brush? I supposed water alone is not going to remove it completely.

yes it is a good product indeed. i bought the brown one, it looks great. i suck at applying eyeliners using pencil or liquid. but instead of using the brush which maybelline provides, i used an angled brush. it works perfectly and it’s almost a miracle that the lines were perfect.
