Ask & Answer : What is a good heat protection hair serum?

July 31, 2009 Paris B

ask us!

When we last discussed whether to use conditioner after shampoo, Hasegawa Ayane left a comment and asked a very good question regarding heat protection serums before blow drying.

I don’t think I can do without conditioning after shampooing. My hair will feel really dry and will tangle really easily. However, I do not find the need to wash my hair everyday, I’ll wash it on alternate days.

On the topic of blow drying, I heard that it’s best to use a heat protection serum/spray before blow drying. Do you know of any to recommend?

Well, as I answered Hasegawa, I do not use a heat protection serum for my hair before blowdrying. I blowdry at night before after my shower and after washing and conditioning my hair.

Previously I used to use Redken Extreme Anti-snap serum for long hair. It was lovely. Kept my hair smooth, shiny and manageable and was very good if you planned on keeping your hair long as it kept the ends of the hair sealed.

However, I realized that it was giving me spots on my face wherever my hair touched my face and I quickly stopped using it.

So lets answer Hasegawa’s question:-

What heat protection serum/ spray do you recommend to apply before blow drying your hair?

I’m all ears too! I could learn something!

Stay beautiful,

Paris B

Hello! Just stumbled by your fantastic blog and simply had to answer this question 🙂
Some of my favourite heat protective serums are L’oreal elseve anti-frizz serum (it does not contain water), tigi bedhead control freak serum, and kiehl’s heat protective silk straightening cream.
I like to finish with the body shop grapeseed gloss, or charles worthington dream hair shine serum (again, neither contains water so they cut down the frizz after a blowdry).

I use Marc Anthony’a Simply Straight Heat Protect Flat Iron Spray before I use the straightening iron on my hair. And after that, Joico’s K-PAK Protect and Shine Serum. These would definitely work before a blowdry too.

I’ve never used a heat protective serum before, despite being aware of the harm done to hair by blow drying boldly. normally i would just apply hair serum on towel dried hair and blow dry, not sure if the hair serum does protect hair from heat or not though.

anyway on a side note, i find that it’s pretty hard to get a sunscreen for hair in the market. don’t you think so? malaysia is summer all year round, yet there isnt a proper/nicely stated- sun protection hair products in the mass market. or is it just me who cant find one?

I used to use this leave in condition from “Lanza”. It’s no longer available now in Malaysia but a bottle of 300ml lasted me for 4 years as you only need very little. It uses the Keratine Bond technology and mine is certainly running out already. I love Lanza a lot but so sadly they have changed most of their formulas and the dealer in Malaysia isn’t bringing in anymore coz there were lots of complaints from users.

The funny thing about this leave in conditioner is that if you blow your hair and if it’s too hot it will smoke, indicating that the hairdryer is too hot but certainly no damanged done to your hair. It also protects well coz I noticed that my hair didn’t turn brown. Now my hair is slowly turning brown coz I’m running out of it.

Just some advice I got from a hair concious hairstylist is that it’s better to avoid ingredients like Silicone and any form of Waxes when you blow dry or iron your hair. It works for me. 🙂 I hope this helps

I’ve tried ALL sorts of hair creams/ leave-in conds/ serums/ watnots (not talking about hair treatments which is wat Jojoba is talking about I think). I perm/ dye/ colour/ bleach/ highlight/ straighten my hair every 3-4 months (I get bored easily). I also blow dry my hair everyday (twice a day) and iron flat/ curling iron it occasionally.

And I’ve only found one which is easy to use, doesn’t cause my skin to break out upon contact with the hair, CHEAP, and best of all, doesn’t feel like u have anything extra in your hair AT ALL.

Schwarzkopf’s Bonacure Moisture Kick In Leave In Conditioner Hair Spray. There’s one for normal hair, and another for coloured hair. I’ve used and recommended both. Both are fantastic. You can get it at the hair stock shops in Sg Wang etc for only RM50 for 2 bottles.

Don’t get anything else from Schwarzkopf though. The rest of their products suck ass.
