Recently, I had eyeshadows crease on my eyelids. It was the first time ever that such a thing has happened so it was with great interest that I studied this phenomenon. I tried the same eyeshadow the next day with a cream eye colour as base and this time, everything worked fine. Which brings us to this week’s reader’s question from Hasegawa Ayane:-
Hey PB~!
I was wondering if you knew of any good and affordable eyelid primers around? My eyeshadows always seem to fade just after a few hours and my eyelids aren’t oily. It’s not the eyeshadow since many people have reviewed it and it worked perfectly fine for them.
From, Hasegawa Ayane
I personally have a problem sometimes with eyeshadows that fade e.g. Silkygirl Forest Green palette. I don’t use a dedicated eyelid primer mainly because I never managed to get my hands on the infamous Urban Decay Primer Potion or Too Faced Shadow Insurance, both of which are not available in Malaysia. Instead, what I do is use cream eyeshadows or concealer as an eye base. Some cream eyeshadow that work for me as eye bases are:-
- Benefit Creaseless Cream Eyeshadows – mine is Skinny Jeans which works as a great way to deepen colour tones and I’m sure My Date’s My Brother works great too.
- Estee Lauder Double Wear Cream Eyeshadow – I have Ivory Lace which I’ll review in time and it works a treat because its a neutral shade.
- MAC Paint pots – I used to have a couple but no longer use them
Sometimes, I apply a light layer of concealer or foundation over my lid and then pat on the eyeshadow on top of it. It helps it to last. But I find using a cream eyeshadow in a matching colour makes the colour of the powder shadow more vibrant. So help us out here if you are familiar with eyelid primers.
What is an affordable and effective eyelid primer and where can you get it?

Ooh! Such a surprise to see my question here! Thanks PB~ Hope someone out there knows of something. I heard that I Nuovi has an eyelid primer but I’ve yet to read any reviews or been able to test the product for myself.

I’m a huge fan of UDPP, but it’s hard to get it here, in our country. I tried the Paint Pot but no so happy with it. What i do is, i put my Revlon ColorStay foundation straight on my lids, let it dry for a few sec and then put an eyeshadow. And it’s really works.

I almost forgot. Maybelline has a stick eyeshadow which looks like MAC Shadestick and it’s really2 good. I swear! Once u put on ur eyelid, it will stick like magnet. Can’t wash it with water/cleansing foam, have to use cleansing oil to wash it.

Hi Ayu
You know what? You are absolutely right! The Maybelline Impact eyeshadow pencil makes a great base. Thanks for reminding me.

I just got some L’Oreal Decrease (about AUD 13.90 from glossi.com.au) but haven’t got around to trialing it yet. Will post a review once I do.

I finally got my hand ont UDPP recently. Love it so much, it does help the powder e/s stay longer.

Urban Decay really works but it is quite pricey and its hard to fine!!! I think at times, a good foundation works!!! Include foundation on your lids and pat on a nice finishing powder.
PB, I’m glad to be back and thanks for the wonderful messages 😀

i swear by UDPP and TFSI. I tried using concealers and foundations, but they never work. Cream shadows on the other hand, as much i own them, i never use them as base! LOL.
i will need to check n see if i have any neutral creams, i have mostly wild shadow colours. 🙂

I love Too Faced Shadow Insurance. I use it everytime I’m wearing e/s or eyeliners. It really does an excellent job. I’ve oily eyelids and no matter how good the e/s are, they will still crease on me. I haven’t had this problem since I started using this primer. I’ve used MAC Prep+Prime before but I like Too Faced better.

I swear by UDPP. It really helps the eyeshadow last longer without creasing. I tried foundations and concealers but they never worked for me.

I use TFSI. But still crease like mad at the end of the day.

My eyelids are oily and my eyeshadow’s ALWAYS crease but recently I laid my hands on the Urban Decay Primer Potion and it’s the most fantastic product I’ve ever come across. I got it off eBay from a seller based in Spore for RM75 (free shipping) but I also found it in Macau when I went recently and it was much cheaper at only RM50 after conversion. Alternatively if you have friends in the UK, ask them to get it or send it to you. You’ll never want to use another primer again.
If you can’t get your hands on UDPP, I have tried Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Cream Eyeshadow and seriously, it NEVER creases. I tested it by putting it on in the early morning and having a day out in the sun and till late night, it never creased at all. Hope this helps…

I’ve tried Too Faced Shadow Insurance before as it is sold at Sephora in Singapore but they do not work well for me. when used on the hands for swatching, they do help in making the colors more bright and less difficult to remove (ie, the color stays albeit abit less vibrant, even tho I rinsed my hands) but they do nothing for my lids, it creases within hours for me.’
I’m looking at getting UDPP now coz I cant live without a proper e/s primer!

UDPP feels rubbery after using it for some time. it’s pricey and i don’t like the packaging. i prefer benefit eye primer. smells good too!

ooh i can’t believe i missed this post. i’ve tried a whole bunch of e/s primers… so far nothing that’s good AND cheap, lol. e/s primers are so YMMV but personally for me, i would rank them like so: (1) UDPP (2) ArtDeco (3) MAC Paints in the metal tube (4) MAC Paint Pots (5) just regular concealer (6) TFSI (7) Elianto e/s primer. that’s right, TFSI sucked on me. i haven’t personally tried but i’d like to toss in another suggestion: Laura Mercier Eye Basics. they’re supposed to make good e/s primers too, and comes in several shades to match your skintone.
