The Lipstick Economy Project : 30 days 30 lipsticks!

May 31, 2009 Paris B 52 Comments

Recession! Down times! Hard times! Save Money!

Hands up who’s been hearing all this lately? The current economic recession is not a myth, its a reality. But cosmetics companies may be finding a silver lining in the dark cloud of recession because of the “Lipstick Economy”.

Lipstick Economy
  • Save

The Lipstick Economy theory is that in times of economic down turn, the sales of lipsticks go up because its one of the cheaper cosmetics and it still helps you look good. You can skip the eyeshadow and blush but still look pretty polished with just lipstick on. So it might be an indicator of the economic situation. (NY Times) Think of the Great Depression – women were still immaculately turned out with bright red lipstick defying the gloom and doom of the economy!

People who might otherwise spend on a luxury item or a higher priced item may cut back. Instead of spending money on collagen lip implants they can try a lip plumper at a fraction of the cost. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars or ringgit on a new dress, they may save that, but for a personal treat, buy a new lipstick. Few lipsticks exceed the RM100 mark – those that do, like the Guerlain Rouge G fall under luxury. So, if you might otherwise spend RM1000 on a new bag then spending RM145 on a new Guerlain Rouge G lipstick might be a nice substitute – you still get luxury and a treat but you save RM855 🙂

So, with the lipstick economy firmly in mind, here’s my project for June – 30 lipsticks in 30 days.

30 lipsticks 30 days

Ooh so excited. I love Frenched! And hope you can work MAC’s Russian Red in sometime, and a Chanel Red. I’ve been eyeing those two…

I have Benefit’s Frenched and MAC’s Russian Red too!

However I’m still searching for my HG red. Frenched doesn’t stay on my lips and RR is too matte!

      Hi Juschev

Frenched is a little creamy. I apply, blot and reapply. The colour stays longer.

      Hi a.min

It wasn’t to finish the colours, but to see how much is used up in a month. Thus far, its going good for me! I’ll post an update later in the month.

This is such a fun project! Perhaps after this I’ll be converting myself into a lippie girl like you, ParisB? Coz i’m more of a lipgloss girl.

Yeah the statistic is true. i’ve read about it in Female mag. Glad u raised the issue here. =)

      Hi Hanna

Oh I hope you’ll be converted! 😉 I’m not very much into lipglosses. I guess I like colour and texture and lipglosses don’t quite offer me that.

    Hi there,
I really enjoyed reading your article and would like to link it to my blog. I think my readers would enjoy this test as well as the main article from the NY times. 🙂

One thing, though, I noticed that you didn’t have any Avon products. That’s disappointing. I was hoping to see what you thought about that brand 🙂 (Hope it’s nothing negative.) 😀

Thanks and you may link away. I haven’t tried any Avon lipsticks or products hence no reviews 🙂
