Tine at Beautyholics Anonymous asked me about 5 items I do not need and 5 makeup and skincare don’ts. I’m going to break this up into 2 posts because I think each category merits a post of its own!

My Five Must-NOT Have Items
These are 5 beauty related items I can happily live with-OUT, in no particular order. You may or may not agree with me but one of it has taken me through hell and back out again so I’m quite justified in saying that you will never find it in my beauty cupboard!
- Tresemme Hair Conditioner. This off the shelf brand of shampoo and conditioner is supposedly formulated for salons or has a salon formula. It left my hair feeling soft, but left my face a mess of acne. I never knew that hair conditioner or hair products can cause acne but apparently this one did for me, and many readers have left comments on similar reactions to various shampoos and conditioners. My acne problem cleared up once I stopped using this conditioner. Never again.
- Lip gloss. Ok, I’m sure there are many who will be happy to disagree with me, but I say that lipgloss is one of my must not have items. I’d be quite happy not to have any lip glosses in my collection at all as I hardly use them. I dislike the goopy texture of lipgloss and the thick feeling it leaves on my lips, and when my hair sticks to my glossed up lips! I prefer lipstick as I think it looks more polished, and you can mimic having gloss on, if you use a glossy lipstick. That said, the lip glosses I have tried and like are Revlon Superlustrous lip gloss, Guerlain Kiss Kiss lip gloss and Dior Addict lip glosses. The Guerlain and Dior aren’t thick and last longer than normal and the Revlon ones are just good stuff for the price!
- Nail Polish. I used to have regular manicures and pedicures because it made my nails look pretty. Then, I realised that for all the money I spent, it never lasts because I use my fingers a lot – typing, scraping stuff, undoing staplers – you aren’t supposed to but I do anyway because fingers are just more convenient. I tried applying nail polish myself at home, but failed miserably because I don’t have a steady hand and I have no patience. So, its bare nails for me! I like it this way because when I was using polish, I found my nails would turn brittle and peel or turn yellow.
- Face Bronzer. I’m not saying that bronzer is something not to have, but it is definitely something I can live without. I am naturally fair all over and I don’t tan (I can’t really tan anyway – I’d just burn) so bronzers are something quite alien to me. I understand the bit about getting a “healthy glow” but I just never saw the need for me to use it. Maybe its because for me, a “healthy glow” translates into glowing skin and pink cheeks. Besides, the few times I tried using bronzer, I found that my face was a shade or two darker than the rest of me – made quite a comical picture, it did.
- Lip Palettes. I don’t like lip palettes so I don’t own any anymore. I don’t like how they melt if you carry them around in our hot tropical weather; and I don’t like the messy look of the lip palette pans after you have dug into them with your brush, especially after the colour has been used a lot. I understand the convenience factor, but I still don’t like them. This is also why I tend to steer clear of face palettes that have mixed cream and powder products in them.
There you have it. 5 items that do not work for me or that I do not like one way or another. Makeup and skincare are very personal things so my holy grail product might be your worst nightmare and vice versa.
So, are any of my “must NOT haves” your “must haves”?
Stay beautiful,
It’s so funny, because I bought the Tresemme shampoo and conditioner after reading your review, and I’ve loved it and used it ever since! It’s so far the best drugstore-brand shampoo and conditioner I’ve used :p
I don’t use lip palettes either. Guess I’m just too lazy to have to use a lipbrush. I normally steer cleer of makeup palettes with lip colour in them.
Anyhoos, thanks for doing the tag. Can’t wait to read your makeup/skincare mistakes 😉
Fake lashes – I have two sets and I hardly use it unless I’m in the mood for it on a very special night outing.
Make up palettes – Coz I end up not using some of the stuff inside
Bronzers – Haven’t tried but will not ever get them. Weird on fair skin
Lipstick – I only have one which I use for work. BB in Tangerine. I prefer colored balm coz I don’t need precision on application. I do that when putting on lipstick (no mirror) but it doesn’t give me the same confidence
Eyeshadows – Have them. Don’t use them. Eyes are better without them most of the time =P
On a side note. I must have my glosses. But I only use them when I know I will be indoors the whole day or else your hair would just fly and stick there continuously =P
Tine: This is a classic example of one man’s meat is another man’s poison! I’m glad its working for you because my hair really felt great when I was using it. But when I broke out… bleh…
S-kay: I don’t even dare venture near fake lashes lol… no idea how to put them on. Thanks for your input! I hear ya on palettes provided they are mixed palettes.
that lip palette SCARED me! it made me think of the future of my Chanel Think Pink palette. sob…
here are what i don’t need:
lip liner
tanning lotion
anything comes in a PENCIL
false lashes (not that i have great lashes. i just don’t like fake lashes on me!)
and same as you, bronzer
I have a problem with mixed palettes-I’ve been a sucker for palettes, but now I’m discovering that it’s just so difficult to keep the lip stuff clean from the eyeshadow bits. And yar, lip palettes just look messy after a while don’t they? But oh how pretty they look when brand new!
Oh I so love my lip gloss! There’s nothing like an ultra mirrored glossy lip! 🙂
As for bronzer, I love that cheesy J-lo look-LOL! So when I take the time, I really love to get that tanned face and neck–must extend to neck, yes.
Liquid liner would be one that I just can’t get a hang of. Maybe it’s the applicator I have that comes with it, but I get the worst possible line with my crappy skills. It makes me look like the daughter of frankenstein, hah.
Anything is contains oil [except for lip balms] is thrown away…
My face seems to disagree with any facial products that contains oil!!! Even tea tree oil!!!!
Once L’Oreal true match 2 way cake was a must have on my dresser… I used it for quite sometime… And I had breakouts. But I didn’t know the reason… After a while, I didn’t buy the refill… Thank goodness I didn’t!!!
I went to guardian today because I wanted to get the refill. But this time I checked the ingredients… CONTAINS MINERAL OIL…. Funny… I didn’t noticed that once I stopped using the powder, my face stopped having breakouts.
my must have will be the eyeliner and mascara.
cant live without them.
i like lip gloss, but i drink a lot and i do not like them sticking on my bottle.thus, i seldom use lip stick and gloss.but i really like the glossy looking of the lips~~~
i like to put on the fake eyelashes too.they make my eyes look gorgeous!!i will just put them on without liner and mascara and my eyes will still look big !!love them.
sunblock is also a must for me! 🙂
I love Lipgloss! I’ve very dry/cracked lips so lipstick on it’s own can be very drying. Sometimes, I just like to use lipgloss only. Love the luscious plump lips it creates!
Jojoba: Pretty palettes are a waste don’t you think?
Monstro: Oh you should look to jojoba for liquid lining. She’s a pro and I don’t know how to use it either!
Ms. Blacklace: Glad you worked out what works for you and what doesn’t. Makes it easy to avoid but makes your range of cosmetics much smaller too eh?
Akiki: Wow to be able to put on false lashes! I dare not even try yet!
gracie: I never really understood the use of lip gloss as a balm but I agree that lipsticks can sometimes be drying. But nope, still no lipgloss for me! hehe…
