Choosing a good hairdresser

December 14, 2007 Paris B

I have been through quite a few hairdressers in my time, and I am really quite fussy about my hair. However, the most recent hairdresser I’ve visited is, in my mind, one of the best I’ve ever been to.The simple reason for liking my current hairdresser is the fact that my hair looks as good out of the salon and after a self wash and air dry, as it does just after he has worked his magic on it.

In my previous experience, I used to notice that whilst my hair looked good right after my hair cut, in a couple of hours, or after I’d washed it the following day, it’d fall back into a previous style of its own. When I asked my then hairdresser how to maintain the style, he told me it was all about using styling products, to keep my style in shape. So, I indulged in these styling products but found they mostly weighed down my hair and I prefer my hair to swing free.

So, when I moved, and subsequently changed hairdressers, I found that my current hairdresser used a minimum of styling products on my hair. In fact, all he’d use would be a little slick of hair gloss and that was it. My hair would swing free and light but remain in its blown out style for at least 2 days so long as I did not wash it. Once I did wash it, I could replicate the blown out style to a degree at home, and my hair would always look just like how it looked the first day it was cut.

This was an eye opener for me. Thus, my personal pointers to watch out for when choosing a hairdresser is:

  • It is all about the cut -Â The way he cuts the hair allows it to fall into its desired style even after a hair wash at home and with air-drying. It must therefore be a good cut.
  • Whether your style is held up by styling products or because its a good cut – My hair doesn’t feel like a helmet and weighed down with styling products and I feel like a super model walking out of the salon. The only tools of my hairdresser’s styling is a good cut and his hairdryer.
  • No hidden charges – My previous hairdresser would charge a basic fee for a cut and wash, then tack on other charges for use of branded shampoos or hair treatments. When I go to my current hairdresser, the price I see is the price I’m charged at the end. RM70 for a wash and cut for women and RM50 for men.

The hair salon I presently go to is De Headline Salon (Tel: 03-2142 0515) at Low Yat Plaza in Kuala Lumpur. It is on the UG floor on a side lane after a money changer and is next to a slimming salon. The decor is quite eclectic but the staff are friendly. My stylist is Thomas who I know I will frequent for a long long time. He is so popular, you need to make an appointment in advance and turn up on time or risk having to wait a long time. If finding a good hairdresser that works for you is like entering into a relationship, I’ve found my prince charming!

In fact, my family and friends are now using him too based on my recommendations and everyone loves his touch. Awesome!

Good for you. I’m very fussy when it comes to my hair especially after washing it. For those who find One Utama a convenient location, I recommend :

Razor Edge Salon 2nd Floor (Old Wing)
    Price : RM85 (female) RM60 (male)

Price is more on the steeper side but the products and service is excellent. Like Paris, I normally judge the quality of the cut by looking at how my hair look after my first washing and a week after my cut (for the hair to grow out a lil).

My previous hairstylist was great too but he moved and I didn’t like his new place (I guess the ambient and product used by the salon plays a big role too) so I engaged with another guy in the same salon. He tells me what’s right and he gives lotsa advices that I’ve never heard before. And for that I thank him because I’ve never been happier. My previous stylist was all about giving in to me and sometimes my hair turn out bad because of my decision which I felt he should’ve advised me on.

I’m a fussy person and so is my stylist (probably due to his age too). Thats why I love him. He’s very meticulous and have asked me to come back for a free trim if I’m not satisfied or if my fringe grows long but I don’t wanna trim the back yet.

Look up for Daniel (off on Tuesdays) but there’s this uber hot guy there…gawd….so hot….his name is Simon (off on Wednesdays). I see that he specialises mostly in short cuts. So if you’re interested, he’s an alternative =P

        Hi,
Do you all still go to razor edge? How much do they charge for colour? Thanks.

I have been having my haircut at D’Cal in Sg Wang by Kelvin for the last 10 years or so. He’s so good that my wife, mum, cousin and aunt also have their hair done by me. You are right about finding and sticking with a hairdresser that you like. It’s a personal thing 😀

Fab! I’ve been looking for a new hairstylist to change to. My current one just doesn’t do it for me anymore…

Sounds like a great hairstylist! I’m pretty happy with mine at the moment, but will definitely keep Thomas and Daniel (from S-Kay’s comment) in mind when I wanna splurge a bit more. *grin*

    Hi!

Can anyone update me the whereabouts I can locate Thomas, the hairstylist? The earlier comments I read mentioned Plaza Yow Chuan but I can’t seem to find that comment anymore. There was a telephone number too. Very interested to try him out. Please help!

Thank you ParisB. I know I have read it somewhere but unfortunately I can’t open the bottom part of that page today. Would you be kind enough to give me the phone number again? Thank you.

An “I’ll be out all day and need my makeup to An “I’ll be out all day and need my makeup to stay on” look 😅 Super simple and using stuff I already own. How many do you recognise? 😅

For the base I think the key is the Nars setting powder which is basically a silica powder. Many brands have similar white powder for setting. I did this same look yesterday and it barely budged/faded by evening. Only lipstick needed a little topping up 😊

And this is about all the makeup I can handle these days 😂 no eye makeup cos I can’t be arsed 🤪

Posting for posterity because I like this photo 😆 Also hello! 😜

It’s interesting that when I meet people they always ask me “Are you still blogging?” which tells me they don’t read my blog anymore (cos if they did they’d know I am lol! Weekly generally, but still writing) Yet I don’t blame them because a lot of social credit is placed on one’s Instagram presence. This I fear, is an area I am lacking. I pop in every now and then, share stories that are totally unrelated to what people follow me for, then wonder why they unfollow lol! Other times, spider webs gather in the corners of my unused account. I don’t blame them. Not everyone wants to know what my dogs are up to 😜

Anyway I make no apologies. It’s ok if you follow. It’s ok if you don’t. It’s ok if you’re interested in stuff I do. It’s ok if you’re not. Life goes on for both you and I and ultimately, we just both want it to be happy. So do what makes you happy 😊 I’ll still share my beauty finds and I still blog once a week. I may share what I’m up to from time to time, or I may not. I can tell you that I’m keeping busy and that I have a lot on my plate, none of it glamorous unlike that of most content creators/influencers. It’s too boring for most for me to share here so I’ll just share the good bits - as Instagram intended 😂

But if you want to find me, you’ll know how 😊

The review for the product is somewhere on the blog mywomenstuff.com
Yes I know many of you are terrified of lizards 🦎🫣

But I liked this sunscreen - for the body. Even though it left a white cast. Even though it is hard to remove. It kept my arms protected through a weekend of brutal sun exposure and I survived without burning! ✌🏻
