I was reading Tine’s poll on eyeliner when it struck me that I have not reviewed my favourite eyeliner – Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner. A quick check through the archives confirmed this. How could this have slipped through the cracks?
The Bobbi Brown long wear gel eyeliner comes in a little glass pot and you use an eyeliner brush to apply it. I use a cheap flat angled brush with short bristles that I got from a beauty store because I find that it applies easier. Other people like to use a fine eyeliner brush like the one from Bobbi Brown.
This is a gel eyeliner and has a creamy texture. It applies very easily and best of all, lasts without smudging. Granted, I do not have oily lids. A friend of mine has oily lids and she finds that even this longwear eyeliner fades throughout the day. However it is one of the better ones she’s tried.
How I apply it is to load up my brush by brushing it across the top of the gel a few times. Then, I just apply it on my lash line as close to my upper lashes as possible. I like to draw a relatively thick line so it shows up when I open my eyes. I like that it gives me a more wide-eyed look and actually helps make my eyes look bigger. The magic of makeup!
I presently have:
Sepia – a matt very dark brown. Its my everyday liner.
Bronze Shimmer – a shimmery bronze. I find this one a little on the lighter side and the metallics don’t really show up once applied on the lids.
Hunter – a matt dark green.
Cobalt – a matt dark blue
I found that Cobalt was drying up faster than the others, even though I keep it closed tight. I have been using the others for a while and they are still doing ok. I would recommend that you close the lid tight after every use and not leave it exposed to the air too much.
I am contemplating getting black or graphite next because I’d really want to get a black liner. The Kate gel eyeliner unfortunately doesn’t do as good a job. The Bobbi Brown long wear gel eyeliner retails at all Bobbi Brown counters for RM60 or RM65 if I recall correctly. As it lasts a long long time, I’d say its absolutely worth it.
Pros: Long wearing, a lot of product, many colour choices
Cons: Dries up if you aren’t careful

Hiee.. I find liquid eyeliners too harsh for me and I’ll always end up looking like an opera singer. Is gel eye liner similar? I’ve read how people have said gel eye liners are great and natural looking and etc.. but it’s so.. “mah fan” since you HAVE to learn how to apply it properly first.. and quite inconvenient to carry around.
Did your oily eyelid friend finally find a good eyeliner? Coz I’m looking for one myself, no luck yet.. 🙁
PB says: I don’t know how to handle liquid liners, but this gel liner is a cinch. The line can be pretty harsh but I like it coz my lashline disappears when I open my eyes and this helps accentuate it and me my eye look bigger. My friend hasn’t found anything good for oily lids yet but I’ll report if she does!
The best one for oily lids is Revlon felt tip liner, its quite expensive though, but cheaper than Bobbi Brown… You might not like it cause it looks quite heavy, but they have few different colours like brown if you want it to look softer… but it is guaranteed it wont smudge all day long and washes off very easy too .
I’m using those waterproof/smudge proof eye pencil from Dior. Migawd! Finish damn fast ok! It’s like almost to the length of my normal pencil liner already (which I’ve been using for almost 2 years)
My lids tend to turn oily also throughout the day but thankfully so far it hasn’t affected my waterproof/smudge proof liner yet.
I think I wanna give the gel liner a try. What I normally do for my liner to last the whole day is to either use dark shadow and line it on the eyeliner and bring a pencil liner around in case of emergency.
PB says: I stopped using pencil liners when I switched to gel. And I like that dark shadow trick too. I think I’ll write about it some day 🙂
Sounds like a great eye-liner. And good price too. I am still using the old pencil-liner, which is difficult to apply, but since I have been mastering it for some time, the result is not bad. But I am sure it doesn’t come up as good as Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner.
I will definitely try that one.
PS. I have added your site to my new blogroll. I have always liked yours and you definately inspired me to write. Quite concerned when you stopped posting for a couple of weeks last month. Now I am glad you’re back. Keep up the good work, Paris.
PB says: Aww… Andie, you made my week! 🙂 And the gel liner is awesome provided you have a good brush that goes with it.
I love this one! It goes on soooo easily! But you’re right, it may look bit overdone if drawn on too thick, but its okay!! I love to look like an opera singer! hahahah
PB says: I love the defined eye look too! 🙂
dear, its RM65 per pot.. hehe~
and i found out its nice and lasting on my lids as my lids are also oily…
i have sapphire shimmer and black ink.. the shimmer blue are nice~ and black ones are dramatic.. hehe.. i used to have bronze shimmer, sold it off coz my eyes doesn’t stand out coz its too light…
i’m using cyber colors brush which i always feel that the brush is always poking my skin…. how abt urs?? nice to use? i wanna get another one soon..
ps: added you into my blogroll too~ hehehe~
PB says: Thank you and thanks for the price correction 🙂 My brush is pretty nice and cheap. I’ll review it some day. 🙂
Can you use gel eyeliners on your waterline because some people say you can and other say no. I’m interested in buying the bobbi brown one but I mainly use eyeliner on the waterline and I’m confused haha
Yes you can if you can get it to stay on. Most people prefer using a pencil for the waterline. Its easier to control than a brush but if you can work a brush, go for it!
Aw man, I just checked a Bobbi Brown counter (Isetan, KLCC), and it costs RM 80!
Damn inflation.
I wonder how much it’s gonna cost now D: anyone?
