NYX Cosmetics in Singapore

When I first read that NYX Cosmetics was in Singapore, I was quite excited about it. I like NYX Cosmetics stuff. They are cheap (by USA standards) and you get very good stuff for the price. I find that NYX eyeshadows and blushes are one of the best drugstore items around, and are comparable to even department store brands. They are that good!

On my most recent trip to Singapore, I stumbled (quite literally) onto a NYX Cosmetics counter at the Guardian in Paragon Shopping Centre on Orchard Road.

There was quite a good selection of stuff - single eyeshadows, trios, blushes, mosaic blushes, false eyelashes, foundations, concealer etc… basically some of nearly everything in the line.

I loved that because I finally could test out the NYX mosaic blushes (They are the round ones you see in the lower left corner). I was expecting a couple in the mail and being able to test them out in person was awesome (I love them by the way, but thats the subject of another review!)

The prices however, are another matter altogether. They are high for drugstore makeup. e.g. the NYX loose powder eyeshadows (again subject of another review) are only US$3 (RM9.60) or even US$1.99 (RM6.40) but they are S$13+ (RM30) in Singapore. I’d pay US$3 for them because they are US$3 nice but not S$13 nice. Ditto the rest of the products.

I’m not sure how long it’ll last at those prices. NYX cosmetics website ships internationally but at a high price. You can also get your NYX fix from cherryculture.com or ebay. I got mine from ebay and after shipping etc paid about RM19 for a NYX mosaic blush which I can tell is going to be a staple for me! :) However, if you detest the wait, and prefer to check your products in person before you buy them, head on to a Guardian pharmacy in Singapore for your NYX fix!

Stay beautiful,

Review: Makeup: NYX Cosmetics eyeshadows

NYX eyeshadows have been compared to MAC eyeshadows in terms of quality. They are very pigmented and are of good quality. I am not much of a MAC cosmetics fan, so when faced with this comparison, I’d stick my head out and say that NYX eyeshadows are even better than MAC.

This review is for the pressed eyeshadows which I have - the Ultimate Pearl shadows (round pan) and the regular eyeshadows (square pan).

The Ultimate Pearl shadows come in a large round pan with a quilted pattern on the surface. They are highly shimmery and have a soft texture. This makes it easy to apply but also easy to shatter. The pigmentation is sheer so it isn’t for those who like strong pigment but it works well to have some colour on your lids at work. I found that the older ones were actually larger than the newer editions. You can see it in the picture. That said, they are really large, so its not likely you’ll ever finish one up anyway. I’ve since gained some colours and lost some others so this is just an idea. They cost about US$6 each retail but can usually be found in beauty shops or drugstores for a lot less.

The regular eyeshadows come in a square pan. I have the old versions which are flat on the top. The new ones have a quilted top. These ones have excellent pigmentation. The colours are intense and stay on for hours. The colour selection is large and in a word - amazing. I’d definitely say these are worth every single penny, especially so when they cost only about US$5 each and similarly can be found for a lot less at beauty stores and drugstores.

I’ve heard that this brand can now be found at certain Guardian pharmacies in Singapore. I have not seen them for myself so it would be nice if someone from there could confirm their availability and how much these cost there.

Pros: Cheap and excellent quality

Cons: Hard to find

Review: Makeup: NYX Cosmetics Powder Blush

Rhyea asked about NYX blushes in a comment on my post below where I confessed to being a blush addict.

Pictures 220

These are the only NYX blushes I own at the moment. I used to have about 6 but I gave away the rest for various reasons, mainly because I had too many duplicate colours.

NYX Cosmetics is pronounced “nix”. According to their website:

NYX was named after the ancient Greek goddess who ruled the night just like many of our fans out there who rule the night life in this hip and modern techno-savvy world!

They are based in Los Angeles and their products are very reasonably priced. In fact, I’d go so far as to say they are really cheap! The quality of their makeup is very good for the price. I find their powders relatively finely milled and the colour pigmentation is pretty good. I did not expect much for the price, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see that it was all good. In fact, the pigmentation is so good, I’d say they are equal to some higher end products!

They are however, not so easy to find, even if you are in America. Check out the store locator to see if NYX is available to you nearby. Those who care about animals would be happy to know that NYX does not test on animals, so they are safe to buy.
On to the NYX powder blushes (US$6.00/RM20 each)

As I said, I presently have 3 colours:

Cinnamon - a peach blush with a brown undertone. It goes on sheer.

Angel - A light sweet pink blush that is neither warm nor cool. I’d say it should fit most skintones.

Peach - A straight peach with little pink undertone. This colour would be gorgeous on most Asian ladies.

The 3 blushes I have have little or no shimmer so they are great for work. The texture is on the sheer side but I like that in a blush so I can layer on the colour without making mistakes. The problem with a pigmented blush is that if you make a mistake, boom! instant clown cheeks!

Packaging wise, its very practical. The blushes come in a large square pan with a quilted surface. The cover flips up and has a clear cover so you can tell what colour it is inside. Great when you have too many in your drawer!

This brand is very underrated and worth checking out, if you can get your hands on it. If you have friends going to or are based in the USA, ask them to check it out for you. Its cheap and can be found at Ulta drugstores (not all, so check the store locator). It is sometimes cheaper in the stores.

You can also buy it online but it costs more. The website ships internationally, but a trial order I made cost me $38 for one $6 blush shipped to Malaysia by airmail! Horrors! Alternatively, look on ebay.com. There is a seller on ebay.com that sells NYX Cosmetics at a price slightly under retail, and her shipping is very reasonable. I’ve never bought from her personally, but I’ve made enquiries about shipping costs which I found very fair. Others I’ve come across have had good experiences with her though.

All said, I’d say these blushes are some of my best finds and among the cheapest too!

Pros: Cheap, good quality, large range of colours

Cons: Hard to find, not available in Malaysia

Rating: ★★★★☆
