I was chatting with FA online one day on this topic of whether we really need eye cream and what I use or would recommend.
Well, FA I’m no expert and to facilitate our discussion, I decided to take a look around the web to see what other people thought. After doing some research, the conclusion I reached was that the reviews are mixed as to the need for a cream specifically for the eye area.
Some say yes eye creams are necessary because the skin around the eyes are different. The skin around the eyes are acknowledged to be more delicate and so, more emollient creams and specialized creams are needed for this delicate area.
Some others say no, eye creams are redundant and that usual face moisturizers will do. The further contention is that it is all a big ploy by the cosmetic companies to make us spend more money on unnecessary creams and gels.
I rather like the idea that we don’t need a specific eye cream for the eye area. In fact, I presently do not use a dedicated eye cream but use my regular facial moisturiser. I usually put a dollop of moisturiser or cream in the palm of my hand, rub it with the other palm to warm and spread it and then apply it to the face. I find that this way, the moisturiser is better spread out on the skin in an even, thin layer. After applying the moisturier to the skin, I then apply whatever is left to my eye area and that’s it. So far, so good. 🙂
However, I too have fallen into the trap of buying specialized eye creams before this. The one I have used and am most likely to repurchase is the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Recovery Complex. What I like about this eye cream is that it is light and has a gel-like consistency.
It absorbs quickly and doesn’t feel oily nor tacky. It also makes my eye area feel smooth which I really like. What I don’t quite like about it is the packaging as I feel it can be unhygienic.
All that said, if you are a proponent of eye creams, then by all means, don’t stop what you are doing. This is especially if it works for you. For myself, I haven’t used eye creams for a few years now. I don’t have problems with fine lines around the eyes or crow’s feet (yet) and I believe that to an extent, it might be genetic. So, I’m sticking to my usual routine as highlighted above.
However, if you do use eye cream, or even if you are using the facial moisturizer method as I do, take care not to pull too much on the skin around the eyes. Use the fourth finger of your hand to apply anything around your eyes. Its the weakest finger and thus exerts the least pressure. You don’t want your eye cream routine to be the cause of your fine lines and wrinkles do you? 🙂
