Have you noticed how every new movie these days has a 3D version of it? Aren’t they tired of it yet? I personally refuse to watch anything in 3D – gives me a headache and when I realise, after suffering through wearing heavy 3D glasses that feel awkward and uncomfortable, that most of the movie doesn’t give the 3D experience, I feel cheated.

Fortunately, the Kanebo Lunasol 3 Dimensional Eye palettes deliver
I love my Japanese makeup but there are many who don’t because it is perceived to be too sheer or too shimmery. Japanese makeup, for the most part, seems to accentuate rather than colour. I like that and I find its not as easy to make mistakes too!
The Kanebo Lunasol 3 Dimensional Eye palettes from last year are a slight departure, in the pigment department. These palettes are pretty pigmented, which is always a nice surprise. Plus, they also have that lovely iridescent shimmer that somehow only Japanese makeup seem to be able to perfect – the one that makes your skin softly shine without looking like a glitter ball exploded in your face.
I had my eye on 05 Deep Beige for the longest time since I had a peep at it and sometime late last year, I caved and got it. Its a very neutral eye palette but one that can pack a pretty punch. Plus, I get something ridiculous like 8 shades of varying textures in 1 very compact palette. What’s not to love?
Apologies for the obviously used, messy looking palette. Its well used as you can probably tell, as I pull this one out every so often when I want a clean sophisticated look, or a look for work or just when I’m boggled and too tired to be creative.

The palette is a standard sized Lunasol palette with a bronzed metallic looking cover. Its just metallic to look at though as its quite light. Each palette comes with 2 applicators – a dual ended sponge tip applicator and a dual ended sponge/brush tip applicator. I usually toss my applicators at the first opportunity but with Japanese makeup, I usually keep them. They perform at a pinch, and the brush ends are usually of very good quality even for a small dinky thing like that.
Like most Japanese eye palettes, the colours are gradiational and from the same colour family. For 05 Deep Beige, we’re talking taupes and deep grey-browns. Absolutely beautiful shades!

Kanebo Lunasol 3 Dimensional Eye palette – 05 Deep Beige
You can see that there are 2 pans in there that contain 3 shades of colour of slight variations but with 3 different textures. The 2 solid colours are shimmery. The one on the top right, is a shimmer gold-cream that is best used as a highlight. The one on the lower left with the name Lunasol imprinted in it is a shimmer light taupe that is surprisingly pigmented and makes a very pretty lid colour all on its own. The shimmer shades are what gives the 3D effect to lids.
The top left pan houses an almost glittery gold-cream, shimmer cream and iridescent cream shade. These shades can be used alone or you can just brush over all 3 shades and get a combination of textures. You could use this on its own, or use it as a highlight powder.
The bottom right pan houses a matte deep grey brown that is almost black, shimmer grey-brown and a lighter more glittery grey brown. I prefer to use these 3 colors separately. The matte deep grey brown works well for lining while the other 2 deep shades work well for shadow and contour. What this palette is good for also, is for a smokey eye.
The colours are relatively soft to the feel, but aren’t too powdery when used with a brush. I don’t experience fall out of shimmer or glitter or colour. They stay on my lids even without primer (I don’t have oily lids) although if you have oily lids, a lid primer solves that problem.
Here are the swatches to give you an idea of what it looks like on skin. I swatched these with my finger with just 1 pass.

Kanebo Lunasol 3 Dimensional Eye palette 05 Deep Beige swatches Clockwise from Top Left: Shimmer gold-cream, Shimmer white, Iridescent shimmer white; Shimmer light gold cream; Glittery grey brown, Shimmer deep grey brown, Matte grey brown black; Shimmer taupe
Pretty pigmented colours, wouldn’t you say? The top trio is pretty sheer but they are mostly for highlight anyway. The shimmer single shades are almost creamy on skin and are so easy to blend and apply. You could use fingers or just a brush and it works well. The only colour I’d say is a bit more patchy is the matte black so I use it more to line, or I mix up the colours and then the texture is less patchy.
Here’s how I wear it most of the time.

I usually use the deep shades in the lower right pan on the outer lid, then in this one, I used the shimmer cream-gold on the inner lid and blended with the deep shade. Then, I took a fluffy blending brush, brush it across the 3 light shades in the top left pan and use it to blend and tie all the colours together. Its simple, quick and makes for a lovely defined, I might say 3D eye
Definitely one of my favourite eye palettes of all time.
In a nutshell
The Lunasol 3 Dimensional Eye palette in 05 Deep Beige is one of the 5 shades of the 3 Dimensional palettes available in the range. Each palette contains 2 pans that have 3 shades in them, so you have a total of 8 shades of varying textures in one very compact palette. The applicators included are of quite high quality and are definitely useable. I like the textures and colours in Deep Beige. The colours are safe and neutral and can be lightened or deepened depending on your preference. The colours are quite pigmented and its nice that the shimmer shades are not too shimmery. On skin, they just glide on, looking creamy with a lovely shine without glitter. I’d say this palette is a winner from Lunasol. I hope they don’t discontinue this!
Pros: Safe and easy to use colours, Many shades with different textures in one compact palette, Shimmer shades are creamy on skin and not too glittery, Easy to blend colours without fall out, Pigmented colours
Cons: Pricey, Some may find it too shimmery
Who will like this: Anyone who likes Japanese style eyeshadows, Anyone looking for a neutral compact eyeshadow palette that is wearable daily or to create an evening smokey eye look
For the sake of completeness, here’s how I usually look when I wear Deep Beige.

Ok sometimes I don’t look so happy
But I usually go light on cheeks (I used the Lunasol blushes) and kept the lips a neutral sort of rosy that isn’t too bright nor too nude (can’t remember lipstick now… sigh!)
Its a gorgeous palette and I absolutely love it so I will highly recommend it if you don’t shy away from shimmer. Its surprisingly easy to use and looks good whether you use just 1 shade or do an elaborate smokey eye. Definitely check it out
Do you do 3D movies? Have you tried anything from Lunasol that you like? I had one of their first eyeshadow palettes (Skin Modelling). Wasn’t terribly impressed with it and the later palettes that had chunks of glitter in them. I ignored the brand for a while, but I feel they have redeemed themselves in my eyes with their Fall 2011 collection and I’ve been keeping an eye on the brand since. The products are pricey but ultimately the results are worth it

I have this too and I agree it is so easy to wear! The shimmer isn’t overwhelming and the taupes and greyish browns are gorgeous. I’ve been neglecting this palette for a while now. Time to bring it out again

Yes yes, time to bring it out to air
I think this is the best of the 5 palettes. I have the lilac one and it isn’t as amazing somehow.
i have the same series in soft beige which i love-hate and whilst i have dont face the problems with the shimmer/glitter fall out like other Jap brands, i cant seem to make the browns ‘sit still’ on my lids..i dont have oily lids + i use eye primer but by mid day, the deeper shades would have fallen onto my eye-bag area…this is really one of those love-hate palletes that i own..always want to use it coz i just love the colour but will kick myself by mid day, coz i look like a walking tara-panda.

Aww… its a pity the browns refuse to stay put for you
Its quite odd though that they wouldn’t stick to primer either. Have you tried patting it on? I find that patting on my shadows help them stick better than swiping them on my lid.
I love Lunasol!! I always wanted to get this series but it’s always sold out at the counter near my place.

Seriously? Sold out? Wow! I think this is the best series Lunasol has come out with. Hope you manage to get your hands on it
I have the exact same palette but due to my medium skin tones it turns out to be quite an enhanced rather than made up look. Although I like my colours but I guess neutrals are good for ‘no brainer’ days lol. I somehow find that Japanese makeup are more suited for people with fairer skintones, medium skintones like myself are better off with Dior or Mac or Sleek
I also do not think I will be getting any more of Lunasol stuff cos I feel they are very highly priced for something thats too ‘neutral’ lol.. By the way 3D movies make me giddy too but I usually opt for the original versions.

I will have to agree. Asian makeup does tailor best to those who have fairer skintones. I suppose its because of their market – Koreans and Japanese are by nature very fair to start with so their cosmetics will definitely not suit those who need more colour. Also, shimmer tends to show up more on deeper skin tones too, I find. Still, there’s a wealth of Western cosmetics that cater to a variety of skintones out there so there’s lots of choices to have!

I’ve never tried Lunasol before heh heh heh. Nowadays I use my custom Inglot palette for neutrals and my huge Tarte Jewelry Box (From Xmas 2010) heh heh heh.

I have a duo of Inglot neutral shadows. I think the “problem” is that you have to pick the right colours and textures from the billions available, because the ones I have are just alright. I’m not blown away
Tarte does make very good quality shadows but they are a bit soft, I find. Texture wise, I think the Japanese have the best quality but they may not always have the best colour selection
Oh Paris i love the lipstick you have on! What a pretty shade of rose (prays you’ll remember what lipstick it was)
i like how this palette defines the eyes in a gorgeously subtle way, but the price is :O nonetheless i think i’m going to have to give this a try at the counter because i’m on the hunt for a work appropriate palette!

I believe it might be Dior Addict Icone. Its the only lipstick that’s sitting on my dresser for the past few weeks so I’m “guessing” that’s it
Sorry! Yeah the price is quite off putting but Lunasol is marketed as a higher end cosmetics brand which explains the price point
I hope you’d like it if you decide to give it a go
I have always LOVE lunasol!and gosh this is soo ‘delicious’!
I have one of the 4 colors cream, pink, purple& Brown palate…
Would u recommend to get this when I already own the naked palete?

Hmm I’d say its a tough call. You know I’m not that big a fan of the Naked palette so if its up to me, then I say yes. The quality of shadows in Lunasol is, I personally feel, better. However, in terms of variety of colours, the Naked palette trumps this at a smaller price tag. So I’d say that if you do have the cash and don’t mind a similar sort of neutral palette, then its a nice one to own. But if you feel its too similar to the Naked palette, then you can always pass
That said, all the palettes in this range are very neutral toned. Japanese makeup is quite subtle

so pretty! these sort of colours are one of the loveliest and easiest to wear, though yeah it’s a bit boring
i always go and look at Lunasol’s e/s, but I never bring them home, I guess it’s the price that’s stopping me!

Actually I wouldn’t call them boring, coz the colours are quite unique, being quite neutral and not warm or cool at all. And the shimmers are very unique
I will say its more normal, brown being a very safe colour to go with. I usually wait till there’s a promo on or I buy them from my salon where I get rebates anyway so it pinches the pockets less
What a gorgeous palette!! Is it still on sale? I must save up for one… I have the famous beige beige which does not even show up on me except the darkest shade. Lunasol’s lipsticks are my favorite among all the Japanese brands though!
Twitter: paris_b
June 26, 2012 at 2:39 pm
Yep, its a permanent colour and range
I think I know the one you mentioned. One of the early ones? I think the quality in the earlier ones weren’t as good to be honest. This is much better, and yes, their lipsticks are amazing! Pricey as heck though
it looks really pigmented! I haven’t tried anything from Lunasol…. maybe time to check it out…

Yes, these palettes are quite pigmented, but it still has that sheer shimmery quality of Japanese makeup. Definitely worth taking a look

I am currently falling in love with Lunasol. Most of their eyeshadows are great! They are buttery, smooth and almost no fallouts. Although the price is not cheap, I still don’t mind paying that price for a good palette.

I have to agree! They are easy to overlook but the quality of most of their makeup is pretty good.

I only own one eyeshadow palette from Lunasol and I got it a really long time ago when I was on a trip in Asia – at the time I never knew anything about the brand..

Yes! Its quite easy to create a smokey eye look with this one, and the shimmer helps bring a sparkle to the look that’s quite unique
I think its quite popular in Japan and Taiwan but over here, it seems to be a bit under rated. Still, I have liked everything I’ve tried so far and its good to know that you’ve picked up one palette at least!

I’ll actually have to look into Japanese brands when I’m home (soon, yay) this summer. I never got into makeup before I left, so I don’t really know what to expect! I guess I’m too used to eyeshadows packed with pigment at this point, though I do think the mix of finishes in this one is interesting!

Haha Taiwan is heaven for Asian makeup
I think though that if you are used to very strong colours then Asian makeup will definitely be a bit of a disappointment. Its always that age old debate. My choices of Western makeup is also dictated by my preference for Asian – so I go for sheerer colours overall but high quality
Yet to own anything from Lunasol …. You are such a temptress!! (love & hate you, Paris!! Lol)
Very curious on your take of what would be a better buy… This or Naked (original aka #1)?
Last note… I hate 3D movies! Hate d glasses! Always smudgy, scratchy and god knows how many billion bacteria are “homing” there!!
Twitter: paris_b
June 26, 2012 at 2:59 pm
Whew! Lucky you said love before hate LOL!!!
As for the comparison with Naked, as I told Gin above, I think it comes down to preference. The Naked palette is a bit cheaper (RM10 I think) and the colours are more varied. This is more different shades of the same tone. I can’t say which is better, but this is more compact as opposed to Naked. I think it’ll come down to personal preferences. I’m not a huge fan of Naked so if pushed, I’d pick this
This is beautiful, earth tone is still the tone that I will comfortably use on my eye lids.

Neutrals are under rated and are the easiest colours to wear
I do have problems with warm browns so this one is quite perfect.
Love the shimmer light gold cream, lol the moth in me is talking again! Very pretty on you and makes it a very versatile for day and night wear I think

Love this, Paris! Earth Warm color is definitely my color. Always look odd with cool tone color. And, btw i enjoy your FOTD a lot. Those other beauty gurus out there are very good with make-up. But most are too complicated for me to try. I like the simplicity of yours. It compliments your face and you definitely know what works for you.

Aww thank you Nani! You made my day!
The primary reason I don’t do fancy makeup is because I’m really not all that good at it and what you see is what I’m wearing to work so I can’t do anything too fancy
But its great to know that it helps you and my mantra is “Life is simple, don’t complicate it” and I guess it carries over into what I do too
Thanks again!
I have this is Cool Beige. I love it
I’m medium/light (depending on the season) and this shows up really good on me, as with most Asian eye makeup. I also love Japanese eye makeup in general as compared to western brands, for some reason western brands can’t seem to pull off a beautiful nuanced eyeshadow, most of it are very loud and colorful and strong, even if it’s a neutral palette. In particular, Japanese brands (hello Suqqu!) has mastered the art of nuance and subtlety and they consistently produce ridiculously soft and smooth palettes
Lunasol is touch and go for me. Some of it’s collections are too shimmery. I’ve come to an age where I steer clear of many shimmery eyeshadows, this palette is is not as heavy handed w/ the shimmer as compared to its previous releases.
Twitter: paris_b
June 27, 2012 at 9:47 pm
I was debating Cool Beige too! But decided to go with a deeper shade
I must agree with your observations about Japanese shadows. Most of the time, it’s not about the colour but what it can do and that is something I have yet to see a western brand do well. You just reminded me of my one Suqqu palette! Must dig it out
and yes, I too shied away from Lunasol’s previous palettes thanks to the glitterball effect. But the new blushes are heading there :/
i think this is one of the more interesting brown shade palette i have seen..sheer enough for day use and the darker colours sure can create smouldering sexy look for the night..i may get this one despite the price, mayb bcoz of my tan skin somehow brown shadows ( esp those towards taupe & grey) suits me more.. i detest those brown with pinkish tones shadows (a mistake i made by buying 1 fr Sasa, under the cyber colour brand)

It’s not just you Samantha. I can’t wear red or pink tone browns either and they are the ones we find most often! It’s hard to find a true straight brown that doesn’t have that red undertone so when I do, I tend to pick it up
These colours look amazing on you!
