Insta-Updates: Getting Shorter by the day

guerlain liner kohl pencil

This morning, I sharpened my to-go eyeliner pencil and watched it get shorter. I play around a lot but there are some gems I go back to every single time. When I’m messing with pencil liner, I hold no truck with those that smudge, transfer and disappear after a while. And I always… ALWAYS go back to this one.

This is my Guerlain Eyeliner and Kohl pencil liner that has been with me for years (old review here). It lines like a dream, smudges easily for a smokey base, or does not smudge when I don’t want it to. Its getting shorter by the day which tells me it will be almost time to repurchase… soon icon smile Insta Updates: Getting Shorter by the day

What’s your to-go pencil liner then?

Mine is MAC Pearglide eyeliner in Lord It Up. I wear it almost every working day. I keep my work makeup very simple – foundation, mascara, eye liner, blush and lipstick. I’m glad MAC has made the Pearlglide eyeliners permanent now.

pencil eyeliner has NEVER worked on my as i have oily lids and infolding lids…
they’d disappear within minutes……
for years, the only thing that stayed on my was the KissMe heavy rotation…
but i didnt love it because it flakes after 4hours or so…also, i am quite clumsy hence it is difficult for me to draw a thin line with it…another reason is i have always prefer dark brown over black eyeliner and kissme is in very intense black.

I recently decided to give pencil liner another try.. due to a relative pricetag in blogsale…Bought a Dior Crayon Eyeliner in Noir Trinidadand and a Lancome Le Crayon Khol in Chataigne…
Sadly, dior just disappear within 5 minutes! (i am not joking about 5minutes!) and leave me with super smudgy panda eyes……
Lancome is slightly better..although it ended the same as dior without primer, it stays for 3 hours WITH primer..before transferring itself to my lower eyelid…

i truly like the effect of eyeliner, giving me big eyes and what not…but..HAIZ….

I know a lot of people have problems with pencil liners so you aren’t alone :D I think those who do have problems will prefer liquid or gel liners. They last longer, don’t smudge and are easier to control. I always find myself going back to pencil liners for the convenience though. I guess I’m lucky to have found “the one” hehe…

MAC powerpoint eyeliner is the only one that ever made it to the end… it was a little stub when I was finished with it! XD

The million dollar question is… did you repurchase? ;) Glad to know there’s one that you love enough to finish :D

Pencils all smudge on me, so I use a liquid pen liner.
But I have not tried the Guerlain one :D Maybe on my next trip through duty-free.

Which liquid liner do you like? I actually really like the Maybelline Hypersharp one. Cheap and effective!

I haven’t tried that one yet; I use Kate Supersharp Liner but the K-Palette Real Lasting Eyeliner works well for me too.

I’m more of a gel liner gal, pencils smudge on me too often, while I’m too impatient for liquid most of the time :P Stila Smudgepots ftw!

my go to pencils are lancome khol in black coffee and ebony- but then again because of oily monolids only use for smoky eyes which they are perfect for! otherwise am currently loving k palette liquid eyeliner…

I’ve heard so much about K Palette and how long lasting their liners are! I must consider that the next time I’m looking for one ;)

Ooh yes, I’ve heard about Topshop’s liners and how good they are too! I keep forgetting to look at their cosmetics though. I think being placed inside a clothes shop that I never go into isn’t great market positioning LOL!

Michelle Beh April 26, 2012 at 8:07 pm

You are definitely right about that. It is a great marketing positioning which made us always overlook their cosmetic .

Hmm now I want a Guerlain eyeliner darn it!

My go-to eyeliners would probably have to be UD ones, since I collected a whole bunch of travel-size ones. I only use pencils on my lower lash line though, so I don’t have too much smudging problems. My recent find is Diorshow Eyeliner. It stays ALL DAY on my lower lash line without any budging, smudging, or fading even without a primer (although I do wish the texture were creamier, but anything creamier does smudge on me by the end of the day)!

Haha suggestible! ;) I can’t use the UD 24/7 liners. Smudges on me the minute they get on my lids. I have no idea why :P

I have like a ton of pencil liners, namely Maybelline Cream Pencil Liner, Rimmer Pencil Liner, Nature Republic retractable pencil liner…. and the list goes on. (forgot the actual name of all of the liners)

Don’t really have any favourite at the moment as most of the ones i’ve tried, area always leaving smudges on my under eye……. it’s like ‘opps, no need to smudge it anymore because by 11am, i’ll have it automatically done’. LOL

Anyways, I was really into intense black liners before but now, i’m more of a dark brown or brown liner person. Oh well, i guess I might go back to black liners again in a few months…

I never got into brown liners – I guess I like that dramatic look since my eyes aren’t that large anyway so I can get away with trying to make them look larger hehe… I think pencil liners will generally smudge. For non smudgeability, it will have to be gel or liquid liner :)

Sharon April 26, 2012 at 4:14 pm

Well, for me, I’ve tried it all and everything smudges and I think it must be because I have oily lids. But oh well, I always stay with brown liner as it doesn’t seem to smudge?

Maybe I should try more brands and one day I’ll probably find my HG eye liner!

I think those with oily lids will find it much harder to work liners without smudging. Have you tried using a primer? Or maybe some formula do better in different colours :) I find in some liners, some colours are “harder” than the blacks and so don’t smudge as much.

Reply

Sharon April 26, 2012 at 5:40 pm

Yup, i do use a primer before applying eyeshadow because before this, the eyeshadows only last from 7.30am till about 10.30am but with the primer, the eyeshadow lasts until the end of the day.

So far I’ve only used black & dark brown/brown liners. Brown liquid liners do not smudge though, or maybe it did smudge but not as obvious as the black ones?

But thanks for the recommendation though!!

Hands down, best eyeliner I’ve used! Stays put even on my oily lids, without a primer. It was a sad day when Khol me Bronze was no more available. I’ve since then resorted to Cream Shapers from Clinique. Gel liners are just too much of hassle for me.

Yay for another Guerlain Kohl pencil fan! *high 5* I’ve never tried the Clinique Cream Shapers. How do they compare to this Guerlain one?

Reply

Kate May 21, 2012 at 8:46 pm

Generally satisfactory except I think it needs a primer for better lasting power, but maybe that’s for me and my super oily lids! But nevertheless a great substitute. My fave shade is Egyptian! Probably also because the name exudes a certain mystery and charm of the ancient times hehe.

I recently came across Siti cosmetic line (yup by siti nurhaliza) in Watsons and decided to give the eyeliner a go and to my suprise I actually really love it! I’m also currently using Milani’s retractable eyeliner, super love. It stays on really well without smudging.

Mine is the MAC powerpoint eye pencil in Stubborn Brown. It is easy to smudge when I want to and also looks fine when I don’t. I’m on my third pencil now. ^^ The other brand that I’ve tried was the Benefit Badgal liner waterproof. I don’t like it much aft buying it. I still have like 3/4 of it. Not just it was pricier than the MAC, it just didn’t work with me. Or maybe it is just me?? haha.. But I still have my MAC to save the day!

hi, i have been looking for my elusive pencil liner for tightlining (ended up with tonnes in my drawer !). I bought Guerlain over the weekend with high hopes but it smudges! can i ask whether do you apply primer, or do you notice any difference with /without primer when you tightline?

liq liners (dolly wink, Clio, k-palette) stay put for me whole day. but not sure why, i am still NOT giving up looking for my HG pencil! i hate myself :p

I don’t use a primer but I don’t have oily lids so I don’t get smudges. If I squeeze my eyes shut then maybe there’s transference but otherwise, little to no smudging throughout the day with this pencil. Liquid liners and gel liners will stay on much longer while pencil liners will tend to disappear throughout the day. Its just how the formula is :) And don’t hate yourself. I’m sure there’s one out there!
