I first got this Burberry Lip Cover back in April/May 2011. The colour is Delicate Rose and its a very lovely shade of pinky-nude that is surprisingly flattering on me and I’m sure on many. You can see swatches of it and my review of Delicate Rose here.
When I got it, I was not impressed by the flimsy packaging that gave way on me quite quickly. The magnet cover was a nice touch, but I was quite ambivalent about it. What I did note was that the lipstick had no smell. That was a nice touch.
Recently, I dug this one out again and when I twisted it up and placed it to my lips, I caught that unmistakeable waxy smell of lipstick from the 80’s. You know what I’m talking about right? That smell that says “I’m on my way to turning bad”.
Drat.
I didn’t think too much of it then. But yesterday, I took this out again to use and oh my! The wax scent has just gotten stronger! Application is still smooth, colour is still lovely, but that awful awful smell remains. I had to wipe off the lip colour and start again with something else.
I was understandably upset. This is a RM96 lipstick. It isn’t cheap.
I first had to contend with shoddy packaging back then. Now, just about 6 months later, I find that this RM96 barely used lipstick is starting to turn bad. That waxy smell is usually the first sign of it going rancid and it will only really get worse.
Very disappointing, Burberry. I was planning to try the new Lip Mists but now I don’t think I will. Not with a lifespan of 6 months anyway. I still have that much lipstick left and I really should toss it but for whatever reason, I’m still holding on. Maybe because it still looks sleek and pretty on the outside, even if its rotting away on the inside 😛
I’ve had lipsticks from many brands, high and low end and they don’t die on me this quickly. I don’t know if I got a dud. I do hope so though because I’d hate for someone else to pay this much for a lipstick and then have it stink up in 6 months. For the money I pay, I’m sticking to Dior Addict or Rouge Dior lipsticks – lovely textures, pretty packaging, gorgeous colours and they do not stink of wax!
Am I the only one who has experienced this with Burberry Lip Cover lipsticks? Did you also have a similar problem with Burberry lipsticks? Don’t you hate it when something this expensive goes all pear shaped on you so quickly?

OMG!!! I love their lisptick colour and texture and now 6 months down the road, going bad … feel so sad for them !!!
Paris B says
Is yours still fine?
Eli says
You must have felt like throwing a brick at them. I remember talking to an MUA friend when the Burberry cosmetic line launched and he was on a full-scale rant about how luxury brands shouldn’t try to have their own cosmetic lines.
“But they have pretty colours,” I said.
He rolled his eyes. “Pretty colours, but they don’t have the technical knowhow. Their quality isn’t all that great.”
Paris B says
HAHA to an extent I have to agree with your friend. I think there are only so many colours one can be inspired by from trench coats >.<

oh no…
now that u wrote this,i immediately go and smell all my lipsticks.turn out that they all have waxy smell..
but i rarely wear them.and there are still a lot more in the tubes…
; ____ ;
ps:can i just wear them?..

If the scent doesn’t put you off and the texture is fine go right ahead 🙂 Does it smell very bad to you? Mine has this gust of strong powder scent with an underlying wax smell that bothers me. It was never like this that I can remember which is why I noticed it. I would never voluntarily want a lipstick that smells this way .
AnT says
Omigosh. Very strange dearie Paris. Mine seems fine and it’s more than 6 months now. Mine is the Cameo Pink though. Not much scent though 😀
However, I just got to check the Delicate Rose which I have it at home, not sure whether it stinks or not (worried)
Paris B says
That’s great to hear AnT! I don’t want this to happen to any one!
Rin says
Oh dear, I m so sorry it happened to you. Mine is still okay. Bought it slightly earlier than you. Mine is in Blush no. 9. Just hope it will still be okay even after a year. Anyway, I’ve been following your beauty blog for quite a while & I’ve read your great reviews on Dior lipsticks. I have a confession: I bought my first Dior Addict lipstick after I read your reviews 🙂 Thanks Paris 🙂
Paris B says
Hi Rin! Sooo… what do you think about Dior lippes? Like them? 😀 Hope it was a good rec and I’m sure your lipstick will be fine. Apparently I seem to have gotten a dud 😛
Rin says
Hi Paris! Like them? I love them! My 1st Dior lippie is Dior Addict 578 Diorkiss. I love the colour! I hv now a few Dior lippies 🙂 Will purchase more in the future. So far, very satisfied 🙂 THANKS TO YOU 😀
Paris B says
Ahh Rin you chose such a pretty colour for your 1st Dior lipstick 😀 So glad you love them as much as I do and like you, I’m always up to buying more bleh… my poor wallet 😛
christina says
oh gosh, i’ve been eyeing the delicate rose as well. and i’m on the verge of buying it in a few weeks’ time. do you think you’ll do a follow up on the lipstick (as to why it became like so?) if you do go to the Burberry counter?
gahhhhhh, for 42 SGD this is NOT what i’m expecting 😛
Paris B says
I’ll check if possible but apparently based on others’ comments, this isn’t something that’s happening to everyone.

Hmm, I remember my Arden lipsticks turning bad in less than a year too. Estee and Lancome – 1 to 2 years. But Dior is awesome, my father bought me a tube back in 1998 (Diorific line I think; I was still a student tee-hee) and although it’s all used up now it never went bad and to think it was only used up during the early part of this year (my mom scraped it because it was a lovely color haha). I know it sounds gross but honestly it never went bad, color still as beautiful from day 1, it still had the same Dior smell and texture never changed down to the last bit. For reference this is how the tube looks like http://www.epocacosmeticos.com.br/images/product/DIOR-098127.jpg – so old school 🙂
Paris B says
HAHA I had one of those Diorific lipsticks too Jane! Mine was in a horrific deep berry that I couldn’t wear yet I kept bceause I liked the tube >.<
Liyana Mariella says
Hi PB,
Mine smells like wax too! Pffftt…
I wanted to throw it away but decided not to after considering how much I spent on it (RM96!!! ain’t cheap!) + uber cool magnetic casing + it’s BURBERRY for heaven sake! 🙂
I think it’ll be a nice ‘trophy’ for my beauty collection.
Like you, I’ll stick to my Dior’s and Chanel’s ~
Paris B says
Boo! Try taking it back to the Burberry counter and let them know. I’m going to do the same because at the very least, this is something they should know about!
Kathy says
Hi! Just to let you know I’m so glad I’m not the only one this happened to. I bought my No. 23 English Rose lipstick 4 months ago, and recently, it tastes bad! I couldn’t understand why I wanted to wipe this lipstick off as soon as I put it on. It wasn’t like this before. Just these last couple of weeks. I have never had a lipstick go bad on me before, so I didn’t realize this is what happened. I won’t buy Burberry again. Thanks for letting me know that this happened to you too. After reading our rant, I just threw it in the garbage!
Paris B says
Hi Kathy, thank you for sharing your experience! I’m happy to know this wasn’t a fluke encounter for me and I’m sorry that it happened to you too
