liese hair dye Your Say: Does your hair colour affect your makeup choices?

A while ago, we discussed if our hairstyle affects our fashion style.

Now that I’ve coloured my hair again, after years of having my natural hair colour, I’m going to ask you if your hair colour affects your makeup choices?

Do you find yourself using certain colours more, or doing your makeup a certain way when you have different coloured hair?

As for me, I used to be a bit of an experimentalist where my hair was concerned. I’d gone from a redhead to blonde-brown within a year although I never quite went the whole way to go platinum blonde – I don’t think my work would allow that icon razz Your Say: Does your hair colour affect your makeup choices?

Along the way, I realised that depending on my hair colour, I’d do my makeup a little differently or use different colours for lips and eye. Sometimes softer, sometimes bolder and sometimes, colours that don’t clash with my hair. Also, some hair colour made my skin look fairer while others made my skin look a little sallow so again my makeup had to compensate.

I recently coloured my hair Mocha Orange which is really a warm brown with orange/red highlights and the hair colour makes my skin look a little fairer than it is. So I’ve found that I don’t do my dramatic grey smokey eye looks as much although I stick to colours. For some reason a dramatic grey smokey eye look just looks too stark against my skin and hair du jour. Instead I go with green that works somehow.

But that’s me. How about you? If you colour your hair, do you find your hair colour affecting your makeup choices? No right or wrong answer (of course!) just have your say icon smile Your Say: Does your hair colour affect your makeup choices?

The color looks great on you – your complexion looks rosier. You really are rocking that haircut! It fits you perfectly.

Crazy coincidence! I colored my hair to jet black yesterday evening and was going to go on a major internet hunt this morning to try to figure out how to work this look. I’m sort of clueless on what to do but do feel like rocking super red lips, because the contrast looks awesome.

Thank you! :) Its the same haircut I’ve had for a while :D And red lips is gorgeous with dark hair. Its one of the first things I noticed when I changed my hair colour – I can’t wear red red lips much anymore because the tone might clash with my hair! boo :(

I actually do not do anything different on my makeup, the makeup actually comes out differently depending on my hair color! Your hair color looks gorgeous PB!

Haha… so your makeup is affected by hair colour then? ;) Thanks Nikki – it was a home colour that I’m glad worked!

Nice nice color!! I am a brown lover.. so…you look very pretty in it! and yeah, i think makeup should match the hair color. Unless it’s a party time when we can go wild with colors. (exception and limitation:: i saw Lady Gaga in a stunning Yellow hair, and too bad it looks like a mad chicken…)

Reply

ParisB November 9, 2010 at 10:32 am

Thank you Tass and LOL at Lady Gaga looking like a mad chicken! :D I never really thought about my makeup-hair colour co relation till now and I’m beginning to understand why some women find it hard to wear certain colours :)

Salon chemicals are much stronger hence the drying out effect. Also in the salon if you want a lighter shade, they bleach out your hair first then add in colour. That’s why its so dry. At home, you dont’ do that so you get a rough approximation of new hair colour but less drying. Use a hair mask – works wonders :)

LOL Mine is Mocha Orange too! *five* :D
Unfortunately, one box is not enough for my long hair though :P
Yes indeed. This colour makes our skin look fairer :D

Yay for Mocha Orange! *high five* Unlike you, I find 1 box too much for my short hair! Next time, we dye together and I can share my box with you LOL

AnT November 10, 2010 at 10:14 am

LOL Yes indeed, we should dye together one day :P Can take mine though, I use only 1.5, 0.5 should be enough for you LOL :D

i like your lipstick, what color is that? if i colored my hair, i will make sure the eyebrow color (either dark brown or light brown) matches the hair color as i have low hairline. other than that, i am free flow on the eyeshadow and blusher.

ParisB November 9, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Ooh thanks :) I think its the same lipstick – Lancome L’Absolu Creme de Brilliance in (I believe) Exotic Orchid. You know what’s funny? I never thought about my brows before :P I did use a lighter brow pencil before when I had very light hair but that was about it

Reply

Jennifer November 9, 2010 at 11:41 am

yes it does affect! I had almost blond hair before (like japanese girls- blond brown, if this makes sense LOL) and it makes my facial features not as outstanding as before (esp eyes get smaller o_o), so i had to put on extra eyeliner and mascara before i head out – now i dyed it darker into brown..and i appear more awake LOL

Reply

ParisB November 9, 2010 at 2:29 pm

Hey you’re right you know. When I had very light hair, I played up my eyes more. With darker hair, I can get by with not doing too much to the eyes. But when I have this funny reddish hair, I always tend to go very smokey eyed (but not with black or grey) I have no idea why!

Reply

Jessica November 9, 2010 at 11:44 am

Looking good there ;) To me, it doesn’t affect much but I find myself looking better with dyed hair as it enhances the makeup. Can’t really pinpoint what is different but when looking at pictures (before and after), the overall impression is somewhat vastly different :D Oh Tuesday fuzz, making my brain go fuzzy.

Reply

ParisB November 9, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Thanks Jessica and LOL at Tuesday fuzz. I’m pretty fuzzy myself! But yes having coloured hair is always quite different and its fun. I “rested” my hair for a year or so. I guess I just couldn’t sit still that long ;)

Grace November 9, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Whoah, looking great in reddish brown hair! :) I never really experimented with hair colour so my makeup pretty much stays the same. I dyed it black once and I looked like a hantu, my mum asked me to never do it again! Haha!

Reply

ParisB November 10, 2010 at 9:39 am

Thanks Grace! I tried stark black too once. Too much of a contrast with my skin seeing as my natural colour is just a step down from what I just coloured it recently! :D But its fun to experiment eh? And black black hair is, I feel amazing looking if you have short hair :)

Amanda November 9, 2010 at 4:54 pm

Looking pretty there ;)

I’ve dyed my hair a few times only. I always have my natural jet black hair. So, I don’t really have to make a choice for a makeup that goes with my hair colour.

Thanks Amanda :) I’ve been uncolored for years now, ever since I worked out that my natural hair colour has natural reddish highlights so why waste the money :P I did get some highlights put in about a year or two ago but this is the first time in a long time I’ve had new hair colour. Gotta admit that its playing havoc with my makeup color choices though :P

I usually match it according to cool tones or warm tones… Since I like cool tones better, I highlight my hair with cool tones and select cool tones of brown for my eye brows too.

Other than that, my choices of lip colour/ eye shadow doesn’t change much :P

Reply

ParisB November 10, 2010 at 9:42 am

Nice technique! Yup pairing cool with cool and warm with warm helps enhance rather than contrast so that’s a good tip!

That’s a really nice hair color, you look beautiful!

Hair color doesn’t really affect my makeup choices. I just wear whatever I want whenever I want lol.

Love the new colour Paris! It does brightens up your face :D Plus Plus!!!
Hmmm I don’t colour my hair but I do see some ppl with bright hair and dark eyebrows… Kinda weird… I do see ppl match their brows with their hair as well. I think it looks better that way. :D

Thank you! I know what you mean about the eyebrows! When I had very very light hair, I never thought about my eyebrows so I’d have been one of the odd people you saw! LOL

My hair’s so light now that my eyes look darker and I don’t know what to make of them :-/ My typical looks now make me look more seafood *shrugs*

I like the new hair color on you =)

And yes definitely it does affect my choice of makeup! If my hair is dyed a light honey brown then i feel more comfortable doing the japanese gyaru makeup look. If my hair is dark then i prefer to go for the more minimalistic and simple english rose makeup :).

ParisB November 10, 2010 at 9:47 am

Thank you Aretha! You know what? I can now wear pink lipstick and not feel weird about it :D So you’re right about that :D
