Honey! I Bee-lieve in Guerlain Abeille Royale Youth Serum

I don’t know if you are aware of this little fact, but if you pay attention to Guerlain’s packaging, do you notice the apiary (bee) theme? You might notice it in Guerlain’s year end collection this year. They have gone all out with the bees and honeycomb theme, reinforcing the fact that Guerlain and bees have a long history. Since 1828 in fact. I didn’t know it to be honest.

Guerlain Abeille Royale Serum review

But the bee has been and still is part of the decoration on Guerlain’s perfume bottles ever since Pierre Francois Pascal Guerlain decorated the Eau de Cologne Imperiale perfume dedicated to Empress Eugenie, wife of Napolean III, as a symbol of the Empire (then).

So when you see the name Abeille Royale, and you speak French, you’d realize its to do with Bees – “Royal Bees” if my French is correct 😉

What Abeille Royale Youth Serum Firming lift Wrinkle Correction (to give it its full name) is however is Guerlain’s newest youth serum or anti-aging serum. Its been available on counters since late September/early October, if I’m not mistaken.

Unlike other lifting serums which focus on the loss of collagen, Abeille Royale focuses on helping skin repair the “micro-tears” in the skin which cause the dermis to sink and which Guerlain says is responsible for skin aging. Also, it can help skin repair itself to plump up the dermis and heal damage to the skin.

This serum is formulated from honey and royal jelly, two of nature’s best known healing substances, and what we get, is this lovely milky serum. But I know what you’re thinking. Yes, the honeycomb bottle looks absolutely luxurious and sublime, and the story is magical. But how does it fare?

When Guerlain tells you that Abeille Royale makes your skin feel velvety soft from first application, they weren’t lying. Even this sceptic agrees that with just 1 application, my skin felt beautifully soft and velvety.

guerlain abeille royale serum review

Having used so many “wrinkle lifting” serums to date, I could not test the theory of erasing lines. But I must confess that when I was using this serum, my skin felt more plump, and the skin feels lovely to the touch. I’m presently trialing something else, but I just know that when I’m done with my trials, I’ll go back to Abeille Royale because it just makes my skin feel, for want of a better word, nice.

This might be attributed in part to the scent. It is a light floral scent with an undertone of honey that is at one relaxing and not cloying at all.

You don’t need very much of this serum at all. The dropper mechanism dispenses just the right amount for your face with just 2 pumps. Everything in the bottle screams luxury.

But I do have a complaint. Because of the way the bottle is shaped, and the metal cover, it can be rather top heavy. So if you aren’t careful, the bottle can easily topple over and that would be a very expensive accident.

Also, whilst the dropper dispenses just the right amount of serum by depressing the button in the top of the cap twice, if you don’t do it properly, you end up with nothing. It can be quite irritating sometimes.

I only use this one at night, because its anti-aging, as I use other serums in the day, notably hydrating serums. As a serum, it goes on skin after toning and before moisturizer.

Pros: Skin feels velvety and soft, Packaging is beautiful

Cons: Pricey, Bottle is shaped to fall over, Dropper and pump can be tricky

I do like it but at RM448/30ml I’d find it hard to tell you to rush out to the Guerlain counter and grab it. But if you have deep pockets and you want a touch of luxury on your skin (seeing as it does its job pretty well) I’d say this is a very lovely buy.

Now don’t all of you yell “So expensive!” at me – its Guerlain, its luxury and we just have to expect that luxury comes at a (high) price :)

well i just went through a break up and worked around 13-16 hours a day (once even finished work @3.40AM) and went thru hormonal change, so in short, my skin went berserk. i am breaking out all over my face, my skin suddenly revolted to every single HG product i own, so now i put nothing on my face, and due to dry office air, it’s dehydrated and breaking out even more.

have no idea what to do. Paris, what’s ur HG products to go to when u had cystic acne from that sunblock thing?

Lisa November 25, 2010 at 10:41 am

hi Sugar,
i had the same problem a couple years back. Despite seeing skin doctors, going on medications or switching to other products suitable for cystic acne skin, nothing helped. I was very much in ‘despair’ and down then and this went on for a year.
Lucky for me i came across a range of products “Sophyto” from the UK (which is backed with scientific findings and certifications) which is available in Singapore. After lots of read up on the brand, i decided to invest on several products. And after using this range of products for about 4months, my skin has improved and look better than even before my problems started. Once in a while, i’m tempted to go back to all the hype about the latest offerings in the market but after trial rounds of these products, I’ve so far been dissappointed by the results they offer and even more convicted to stay on with Sophyto and now Organic Pharmacy range as well. However, each person’s skin differs and its best that u can try out and see what is suitable.
Hope the above info is of help to you.

Hi Sugar! I’m so sorry to hear about everything you’ve been through! The work thing is well, hard coz its work but the breakup thing is awful :( You know what? I think what you really need is not quite a whole slew of new products, but perhaps more of rest, lots of water and just to get away for a bit. Stress does wreck havoc on the skin. I know how it is – been there done that!

When I have cystic acne, I usually just stop all products and go back to basics. Basic moisturizing cream and basic cleanser with salicylic acid to clear skin bumps and gently exfoliate (I like the Vichy Normaderm cleanser). In your case, I’d say you need moisturizer that’s for sure. Try a gel type moisturizer – Vichy Aqualia Thermal or H20+ Face Oasis is basic and soothing or just try aloe vera gel. In the office, spritz some of those thermal water things to keep skin hydrated. Just go back to basics – you probably already have something in your collection that can help.

Hope your skin clears up and everything gets better soon *hugs*

I used to have cystic acne when I was a lil kid at 12, and I used Clinique’s 123 program. It worked wonders, and I hope that it would do the same for you. ^.^

Dear Paris B,
You mentioned spritzing thermal water. Do I leave it on to dry or do i pat in it?

Just recently i noticed a line across the bridge of my nose. Got me worried coz i’m only 23. Sigh….

ParisB November 25, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Hiya Cece this previous post might help :) Essentially, you are supposed to spritz, leave for a bit and pat dry for best results and you know what? It works! :) Its not quite for lines though – mostly to keep you fresh and to help skin stay moist

ok that was alot of replies. thanks for all the love. <3 thanks lisa, am gonig to singapore next month i wanan check it out!

yea true, i need to de-stress basically and u KNOW i cant do that right…sigh..

yea i am super tired inside, and really need a proper moisturizer. my face even revolted against my HG bio-essence thanakha whtie cleanser, so i wanted to try cetaphil..but cant find the cleanser. zz.

also freaking pissed because i took a cycle of ro-accutane a while ago and my skin was perfect, but then i was on a cycle of birthcontrol for the length of the relationship and i stopped now, so i think my hormones got screwed again.

everythng is gonig wrong. sigh.

ParisB November 25, 2010 at 8:41 pm

Gotta relax lah… Stress and hormones are really bad for skin. My skins looking and feeling a bit weird too lately. I was playing with some new things in the past week and I don’t think my skin was impressed. Just go back to basics for now :) as for work I’m sure it’ll let up soon – year end is always killer eh?

Lisa November 25, 2010 at 10:57 pm

since u are coming to singapore. Check out Buds Cosmetic at Mandarin Gallery (in Orchard building next to Ngee Ann City/ Takashimaya) if you happen to be in the area or if time allows. There’s another branch at Novena (two train stops away from Orchard Station). But before you do that, do read up more info on the items you think might suit you and also do talk to Eric at Buds Cosmetic. He has good advice and no hard selling!
fyi: http://www.budcosmetics.com/about_us.php

And on a side note, i find roaccutane very bad for my health. And once i stopped taking it, the problems surfaced again. It doesn’t really solve the underlying problem. The antidote is change of diet, lifestyle as well as using the ‘right’ products. You have to work it out slowly. Don’t rush.

Hope you will get well soon (skin wise and emotional side) !
Be happy.

Sugar November 26, 2010 at 9:37 am

ok, will definitely check it out, thank you so much! will be staying 5 min walk from orchard road actually, York/Elizabeth Hotel?

yes ro-accutane is NASTEH for health, but for me, i was blessed enough that i only took it for 2 months, and only 3 times a week, yet after that when i stopped, my skin never broke out again.

but then birth control messed up my hormones again so maybe inthe future i’ll have to start another cycle of ro-accutane. zzz.

i also hope i’ll get well soon. cwy*

Jess November 25, 2010 at 12:40 pm

consider this is a luxury brand for anti-aging serum rm400+ is not expensive compare a Shiseido whitening targetting spot serum now also cos rm400+.. ..

i do agree the design of the bottle is a bit weird and feel like it will topple anytime

Actually I do tend to agree that for a luxury brand its not all that pricey but for those not used to these prices it can get scary 😉 I store the bottle in a storage box so no fear of toppling 😀

reene November 25, 2010 at 1:55 pm

I got a sample of this before and I loved it! The price has kept me away for now, but I think eventually I will make this serum a staple in my regime. 😀

Nadia November 26, 2010 at 10:52 am

Ooh, Guerlain sent me a sample of this to try recently and I love it as well! But, yes the price is a killer! It’s definitely an awesome product though. Love the smooth velvety feel post application.

ParisB November 26, 2010 at 11:48 am

This is seriously wonderful luxurious stuff eh? 😀 Glad you’re liking it too… price aside 😉

I’m 50 (menopause for 10 years already). Using Estee ReNutriv Radiant White. Not that it’s not good but it’s not brightening enough. Using Sulwhasoo for daytime but no whitening. Do you have any recommendations for anti aging together with whitening? Or do you think I have to use a good anti aging for night & whitening for day? Was thinking of trying the new Guerlains’s Abeille’s 1 Month Youth Treatment. But I think this doesn’t have whitening. I do have a few pigmentations. I do monthly facials. Thank you.
