Reader Li Szu emailed me recently with a question as to whether masks and scrubs are necessary and what I’d recommend. I have included an excerpt of her email here:-
I was wondering if you could recommend an extra care/ treatment ie. scrub and masks – how often do you need to do this on top of the regular daily washes?
I dropped Li Szu a line but I thought this was an interesting question that could benefit most of us and of which I could use some of your thoughts too.
Essentially, what I told Li Szu was that I did not think that scrubs and masks were strictly “necessary”. It is nice for our skins once a week and it can help problematic skin e.g. oily skin, dry skin but it isn’t “necessary” if you have normal skin. Do you have thoughts on this?
That said, I enjoy doing scrubs and masks so I do them once a week or when I remember. Usually, I do my masks after a scrub because I feel it works better on exfoliated skin. Some masks and scrubs I like and use often are listed below.
Facial masks I like:-
I also like various sheet masks for the convenience factor. Its fuss free and helps keep skin moisturized although benefits are quite debatable but I’ll share my thoughts in another post.
Facial scrubs I like:-
I don’t think I’ve use others that work as well as these 2 have so I’ve stuck with them.
I think the masks and scrubs I use are beneficial for me – the scrubs help to exfoliate dead cells that can make your facial skin look dull and the masks help add moisture or in the case of clay masks, help reduce oil and clears out pores.
Over to you. Do you think facial masks and scrubs are necessary? What are your favourite masks and scrubs?

I bought a Nivea scrub and cleanser for rm10 and then my makeup artist cringe when I said I use them daily since she asked if I scrubbed at all… *lol awkwardly* my skin is oily and with large pores but acne only comes during in my hormonally-challenged days (when the LH and FSH spikes).. but I’m seeking for a good sets of masks and skincare but I think Garnier’s mask is ok for me…(gosh I’m such a cheapskate)

Hehe, I like this post, make me thinks about whats in my too-full cupboard of stuffs.
I def say, if you can afford to buy makeup, so can you and thus NECESSARY for someone to get facial scrubs and masks.
Why?
1. makes a lot and a lot and a lot of difference on skin, why else wld facial treatment be so useful to our skin eh?
2. lots cheaper if you invest on a good scrubs and masks than having the facial treatment done by prof.
3. It’s a life-long investment foy your skin. It’s better in my view to have good skin rather than good cosmetics. I wld save up money on buying good skincare prdts over cosmetics honeslty. 🙂
Masks that I love using are from The Face Shop and Skin Food.
Scrubs, only one that I say its too good, same as yours blogger — St. Ives Apricot Scrub. The most effective thing that removes rough skin in my cupboard is this.
Facial Masks and Scrubs = Neccessary. 😀

For me the following products are necessary: Burt’s Bees Peach/Willowbark Scrub…I use this 2x a week and use the Orange Essence Cleanser nightly and after washing with that, I use their Radiance Night Creme to moisturize nightly.
If I didn’t do this (which I have been slacking because I get tired before I get a chance to wash my face before I go to bed) and my face has again gone to hell! (From a TERRIBLE full body reaction to black salon hair dye some 3 or so years ago, which now is just limited to my scalp and face…my whole body has cleared up long since then)
I really need to be more disciplined in doing my routine nightly. I was looking around on Walgreen’s website for a cheap face mask because I’d like to try one (unfortunately Burt’s Bees facial mask is no longer available) I didn’t even get to try it, as I just discovered the company and its products a few months ago. 🙁
There’s this Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque for $3.99…but I’ve had such great luck with BB products that I’m afraid to try anything else! :S
Any suggestions?

for me,it’s a necessity..as aging can take a toll on the face….i use the ocean salt facial scrub 2-3x week..then follow up with skinfood aloe mask sheet or etude house pomegranate mask.but if you’re on a strict budget you can try the etude house daily mask sheet 2x a week..yup it says daily mask sheet but i just use them after scrubbing..it has the same effect as those pricey ones…plus the essence is just enough, and you wont be caught with a very wet, dripping face afterwards..been doing this for a year now…and i can quiet say…i does wonders for my skin…
