Checking out the Maybelline Mineral Powder Blush and What is the Instead Softcup?

I did not think much of the Maybelline mineral foundation, primarily because I found them a little too yellow. It was hard to find a color match. So when I recently saw the Maybelline Clear Luminous mineral blushes at Watson’s I wasn’t overly enthused. I don’t work well with mineral blushes because I always find myself using too much.

I thought it was strange that they placed the product low on the counter – it was by my knees and heaven knows, my knees don’t need blush! I did swatch the 4 colors available and was rather surprised that they were quite sheer. Mineral blushes from my experience tend to be very pigmented but I suppose these have been mixed with other ingredients.

The 4 colours available are C01- Gentle Pink, N00 Soft Mauve, W01- True Peach and N01- Original Rose. I was most taken in by Soft Mauve. It was light and looked like it would be buildable and natural. The other 3 colours were a little stronger. There was some shimmer. A tub retails for RM35.90 which is pretty decent.

While I was at Watson’s picking out ahem… monthly necessities… I came across this – Instead Softcup.

instead softcup

I’d read about it in the papers before. An alternative to pads and tampons for monthly periods. The cup in question is a non latex cup that you insert like a tampon to collect the menstrual discharge.

I would have tried it but for 1 setback. Each cup is to be used only once. So, despite what I originally thought, these are not like the mooncup which is a reusable alternative to tampons. At RM19.90 for a pack of 5, I felt it was too expensive (and potentially queasy) experiment to undertake :P

Have you tried either of the 2 products above? Do share your experiences with them especially the latter! ;)

And yay! We made it to Friday and the weekend :D A week has never felt so long… and I’m looking forward to the weekend.

Stay beautiful

i have been searching for reviews for mooncup and cloth pad, everyone praised it so much and said they can never look back again. as much as i am tempted, i am also hesitating, they just cant beat the convenience of the disposable pads. so in the end, i am still using the usual pad now :p

Hey prettybeautiful

I’m afraid I have to agree with you on the convenience bit and in my case, I’m a little queasy too :P

I use the Divacup and it got some getting used to but i REALLY CANNOT live without it. i swear by it. however, i have a hard time convincing my friends because they are gross. if only they knew how convenient it is…

Hi Lassy

Thanks for sharing your experience. It does seem gross – perhaps if you can tell them how the convenience outweighs the gross factor?

Hi June

Thanks for your thoughts. I suppose this might appeal to the public because they get to see and try it before buying?

original rose and true peach are more my colors. they are truly very pigmented! which is a slightly put-off for me because that means I’ll NEVER finish the tub. lol. but that’s just me la. hehe. softcup? nuh uh… I’m not trying any funky looking stuff! happy with regular tampons :)

Hiya Connie

Do we finish anything? :P Then again, the softcup operates rather like tampons too.

well, the mineral blush doesn’t excite me, cause it doesn’t seem very nice.
the softcup is really expensive! can’t imagine i spend almost hundred on this every month while there are so many alternatives in the market

Hey a.min

Yep! It’ll work out very expensive – I have no idea why it should be if they want to promote it!

Wow the blushes look pretty. But have you seen their ingredient list? I don’t get how any of the Maybelline mineral line can be called minerals!!!

They are packed with nonmineral stuff… hmmm. Ah well, if they market them as minerals, healthy and what not… i guess they will sell millions

Hi Sezel

I think as far as Maybelline and other big brands go, its marketing and probably stretching the term “minerals” quite a bit. I’m not sure they market them as being healthier but they are just jumping on the “minerals are good for you” bandwagon. Smart move I reckon but consumers should be aware they aren’t “pure mineral makeup”.

I haven’t tried the soft cup or moon cup before. But i am using cloth pads by scokie. i think that’s how it’s spelt. Very comfortable….

Hi Ms. Blacklace

I’ve been thinking about trying cloth pads… if only to see what its all about :P Do you find it practical?

I don’t really see the point of the Instead Softcup apart from an alternative to tampons, which is in turn, already an alternative to pads. It’s still something you use once and toss out.

I’m interested in trying out cups because it’s reusable, and we can stop generating so much waste.

If you think one or two used pads is gross, isn’t it more gross when there’s a huge pile of it in a landfill somewhere? Or maybe it isn’t gross because it’s out of our house and therefore no longer our problem?

The thing is that if women switch to something reusable, companies that make sanitary pads are gonna see their sales drop.

Maybe this single-use cups will come in handy if you are interested in switching over but don’t want to invest in a mooncup yet. They can’t be cheap.

Hi Gette

I have to agree with you. I might have tried the Instead softcup if it was more affordable and if it was reusable but for a disposable option, its just not an option. Perhaps its an alternative for those with active lifestyles… not meant to replace pads or tampons but as an alternative if they need it? *shrug*

The blushes look pretty!

I’ve never tried soft cups or moon cups, they’re not really my thing. I prefer regular tampons.

Hi Gio

I can’t even work tampons LOL… so imagine the mess if I used these :P

I’ve been reading on the Mooncup, and I can’t picture myself using it. I’m not all that queasy about blood (well, not my own anyway), but I can’t imagine how it’s going to be like when I need to dispose of the, err, fluid when it’s full and I’m in a public toilet. Risking sounding too graphic, how the heck am I going to explain leaving the cubicle with a bloody cup in my hands to wash in the sink? :P

I’ll stick to good ol’ tampons and pads :D

I got the blush in Gentle Pink, cause a lot of people in the US were raving about it. I quite like the bright pink colour, a little is enough for normal days and I can put a lot if I want a strong look.
The only thing I don’t like about mineral makeup is how messy they are! Blush just gets all over the place, I wish it was a compact.
There is a lot of blush in the container, and I don’t think it will ever finish.
Right now I’m using Daiso’s blush in Orange :)

About the cups, I’ve never heard of them. I stick to pads :D

I’m looking for Instead Softcups everywhere. It’s not in sale in Singapore, and the online distributing site vanished.

What I like about Softcups is that it doesn’t have the stem under the cup. It makes a great difference compared to mooncup and diva cup as you do make love even when you have your period. So, it’s like a cup use for a special occasion when you’re down with menses.
It’s be great if i can switch between the type of cups depending on the situation, so you won’t have to spend too much on disposable cups, yet you still get to live carefree without messy bloody days.
