MAC Hello Kitty and Bobbi Brown Brights palette disappoint

by Paris B on March 6, 2009 · 57 comments

Malaysia greeted the gothic Hello Kitty by MAC Cosmetics on Wednesday. I happened to be in MidValley Megamall when I saw loads of MAC Hello Kitty balloons all over for the launch – I asked but they refused to give me one (it was reserved for “media” hmph!) although they did not refuse an adorable child one – ageism I say! :P

MAC Hello Kitty launch Malaysia

Anyway while I was passing by the launch, I saw something traumatizing.

Spot the kitty?

Did you spot the kitty? Honestly, there is something terribly frightening about a giant BLACK Hello Kitty head mounted on a man who is striking a pose for the people who don’t seem to care that Hello Kitty is black and gothic! Very frightening!

I also managed to get a picture of some of the Hello Kitty Collection and to test a couple of the products while being buffeted by the black Hello Kitty balloons that mocked me from everywhere I looked – sigh…

Mac Hello Kitty Collection

By now most of us already know what the collection contains. I only found out prices for 2 items before the sales assistant was whisked away:

  • eyeshadow palettes – Lucky Tom (warm) and Too Dolly (cool) – RM150 each; and
  • Beauty Powder blush – Tippy (cool fuschia pink) and Fun & Games (warm peach) – RM75 each

I swatched the Too Dolly eyeshadow palette (far left in the picture) and to my absolute delight realised that Beautilicious Alyssa palette is a dupe for 2 of the colours! The seafoam and sparkly black! I know I know… I’ve been tardy and not reviewing Alyssa. But I am so sure that they are a good dupe!

Tippy beauty powder blush is a cool fuschia pink and I thought Nars Desire blush might be a good dupe or any cool pink blush. Fun & Games blush was a very neutral looking peach blush. Suffice to say, I wasn’t quite wowed by the Hello Kitty collection… except for the balloons :P

Oh and on the tip off of a reader, I also checked out the Blonde Mineralize skinfinish powder (RM105) from the Blonde Brunette and Redhead collection and yes, the colours are pretty but way too shimmery for me. I also saw the new Mineralize blush duos (RM95) (link). I just realized that the Mineralize blush duos aren’t out in the USA yet which makes us ahead? Really odd! The only colour I clearly remember is Moon River which is a marbled swirl of colours on one half and a pink on the other. It swatches cool shimmery pink.  All the blush duos are really pretty but again too shimmery for me. Am I getting old that shimmer on the cheeks don’t grab my attention anymore! Horrors! :P

Bobbi Brown Brights palette

So, having satisfied myself with MAC Cosmetics, I wandered over to Bobbi Brown where it was markedly less chaotic and lo and behold! I saw the Bobbi Brown Brights eye palette!

Bobbi Brown Brights eye palette

It was wrapped in cling wrap so prying fingers don’t poke at it but what struck me instantly was “Oh my! Its TINY!” and it is.You can’t quite tell from the picture, but the palette folds up into 3 sections – cool colours, warm colours and mirror. The size of the palette is about that of the usual Bobbi Bown pre-made palettes and each colour is about the size of the tip of my finger or smaller than a 5 sen coin. I’m not kidding!

The palette retails at RM280 for 35 drops of colour. They reminded me of Smarties :P Simple math puts each colour at RM8 which is very cheap for Bobbi Brown if you are asking me! I actually toyed with the idea of getting it for travel – 35 colours at your disposal! I did not test it but instead enquired about the Platinum Pink shimmerbrick of which no one had any idea what it was or when it might be expected. I’ll let you know when I know!

So, have you seen either the MAC Hello Kitty collection or the Bobbi Brown Brights Eye palette? Did you get anything from either brand? Were you sucked into the Kitty hype? Did you like anything from it? Do share!

Stay beautiful,

Paris B

Hi prettybeautiful

I don’t hate Hello Kitty but its cute when its white and pink. Its not otherwise. Have you checked out the BB palette?

Connie March 6, 2009 at 11:21 am

You and your balloons! Lol!! You should have borrowed somebody’s kid so that you can get the balloon :p

I’m rejecting Hello Kitty because I don’t like Hello Kitty. If it was SPongebob, my mouth would be watering… the day that MAC would collaborate with Nickelodeon… *day dreams*

When I first saw pictures of the BB brights palette in the Isetan newsletter I thought, “not bad wor!! 7 bucks a color! not bad!” and then I saw the size. it’s even smaller than my 88 color palette! tiny tiny tiny! needless to say, lost all lemmings. Plus a friend of mind who works in BB told me that they had to advised customers not to mix so many colors in a look. against BB style. how contradicting.

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Hi Connie

That might have been strange to say “Can I borrow your child so I can have a balloon?” :) I did read that the BB Brights palette should be used one colour at a time. I was a little puzzled why it should be the case. Perhaps I should try it.

Hi PinkD

Yep, on a per colour basis, its relatively cheap for Bobbi Brown. Do check it out in person and see :)

I haven’t seen both but all I can say is most of the colors are Dupe-able, I have the be honest, I saw the launch over other bloggers on the Hello Kitty on their blogs and I got scared with the black HK too!!!! what are they thinking? I mean ok, black hello kitty is fine, but men??? semi naked men?? hahahha

Reply

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Hi Nikki

Wait till it launched in Philippines and see if they don’t repeat the black Hello Kitty heads! :D

Monstro March 6, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Ooh the HK roadshow looks cute from the pics! But how dare they not give you a balloon?? Balloons are for adults too! :-) And yes, topless men with HK heads? Ermmmm…way too kinky for me! Those colours are not my faves, and I don’t care for MAC so this is a miss for me.

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:36 pm

Hi Monstro

I’m so glad you agree that even adults are entitled to balloons! LOL… and I was giggling away at your comment about kinky kitties ;)

I’d already signed up for the pre-launch party for Hello Kitty here. It’s going to start at 530pm sharp with champers going on at 515. It’s only a 2-minute drive from my work place to the venue and honestly, I’m more excited about the champers than Hello Kitty right now. *shifty eyes*

NB:Already made up my mind I want the Tippy blush, tee hee!

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Hi geekchic

I guess I don’t spend enough at MAC to qualify for an invite ;) I would have liked some champers too! Tippy blush is pretty just that I already have a similar colour.

I was in MidValley too on Wed waiting for my movie to start. I was looking down from the first floor commenting how cheap Mac is positioning itself and walkaway in less than 5 mins..

Reply

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:38 pm

Hi Nette

What a coincidence! I guess not everyone is falling in love with the idea of the Hello Kitty Mac collaboration… even if its sold out in many places.

Chia Yih March 6, 2009 at 2:23 pm

I went to see the B.Brown eyeshadow pallete at Jusco Mid Valley yesterday …. it’s so unbelievable tiny in size !! It make me think of the kid’s Barbie doll’s make-up set ! haha. And i do think the price is extremely expensive.

Agree with Connie, the hello-kitty is ugly … don’t like it either. and their costume is unattractive at all ….but dint manage to step closer to look at their make-up result.

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Hi Chia Yih

I didn’t see much of the Hello Kitty makeup on the models. They were being prim and not letting us non-invitees through :)

Traclyn Yeoh March 6, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Well they probably figured that Hello Kitty in white seems to childish…haha!
I’m invited to go for Cleo Hello Kitty Party tomorrow…I wonder how the turn out will be…

Hi Traclyn

But they did Barbie! And that was cute! :)

i was thinking to go to mid valley to see the MAC stuff but i was too busy with the house stuff. glad i didn’t go. i trust your judgement.

as for BB, i can understand why they are wrapped as i’d be the first one to touch the colours. :P

ps: i got the CS 88 shimmer palette and so far, HATING it!

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Hi Jojoba

I don’t think you’d have liked anything from Hello Kitty. I’ll pop by and read what you have to say about the Coastal Scents palette soon.

I was told by a Bobbi Brown SA that the Platinum Pink Shimmerbrick will be out around April. I’m not sure if her info is accurate though since none of the other SA seem to know.. =.=

Hi Rikairi

Ahaha… they SA were quite blur but friendly enough to take down my request for info :)

I thought I was going to pass the Hello Kitty collection. I was never a fan of bright colours but when I asked the MA if she could try the colours on me and I fell in love with Too Dolly quad. Since I don’t have those colours and the quad is cheaper than buying individual e/s pots, so I decided to get it. I also bought the Nice Kitty lipglass which turns into a pretty pink colour on my very pigmented lips.

The man with a black HK head would scare me too… Were there any children? :D I’m sure they would cry seeing that scary + ugly black HK! By the way, I never liked HK, I mean the character :)

I got the Brunette Mineralise Skinfinish and #266 brush from the Brunette Blonde Redhead collection.

As for the mineralise blush, I’ve tried Intenso and yes, they’re too shimmery and expensive.

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Hi Amanda

I would have liked the Too Dolly quad too. Only thing is, I did find a wearable dupe of it so I’ve saved a bunch of cash :D Surprisingly the children around found black Hello Kitty balloons normal. Oh dear…

Paris, the bobbi bright palette is actually rm 230. i tested it out, and i love it :) I don’t think it’s expensive at all wooottt

Haha I thought the same about the Hello Kitty dudes too! Someone at MAC must have some sick Hello Kitty fetish to think this would be appealing :P
I heard Singapore had the Grand Duos out already too. At least you both finally have something before us :)

Hi Blue

I remember reading about it on your blog! At least our Hello Kitty men were wearing shirts :P

Tasha March 7, 2009 at 5:15 pm

I agree with you on the giant BLACK Hello Kitty head mounted on a man! I just don’t understand the appeal.

I also agree with you on the HK products they don’t seem really great but I think my make-up sickness won’t allow me to say no the LE packaging. I’m shallow that way.

Reply

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Hi Tasha

I guess someone like kinky ;) The packaging was cute I have to admit. No stickers thank goodness!

Reply

Vonvon March 7, 2009 at 6:49 pm

The Bobbi brown palette is really tiny. But I did try out the colours, and I can say they are quite pretty though. And it’s RM230, not RM280. hehe! Good toy for my little girl?? But the price tag does not justify it!

But I quite like the Hello Kitty warm palette, especially the emerald green colour. But didn’t buy it. will review the things i bought from MAC in my blog later. Do visit!

Reply

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:45 pm

Hi Vonvon

I would have loved to try the colours but the palette was wrapped – sigh. Maybe I’ll try a different counter. I guess at RM230 its a decent price for so many colours and useful for those who want to try using colours or for someone without as large a makeup collection :)

Vonvon March 11, 2009 at 7:12 pm

Hi Paris,
Welcome back.

Btw, i was at the BB counter in Pavilion and the SA just happily let me try out all the 35 colours on the back of my hand! haha!

I have Too Dolly & Lucky Tom from the Mac HK collection.
It was not the HK that made me buy them. IMO, the packaging was not great. But then I never care for the packaging of a product that much. I just have a weakness for eye shadow palettes :) And I love bright colors.

ParisB March 11, 2009 at 4:48 pm

Hi Evynoppie

I do like Too Dolly. The colours are my sort of colours :) Glad you are liking something from the collection anyway!

Ugh … I’m just waiting, no, praying hard for the MAC Hello Kitty craze to be over. I just think it’s just over-advertised to the point where I’m actually sick of looking at them now :( Which is a pity, because on its own, they do look pretty cute.

You might have to get a friend in West Malaysia to get it for you. I’m not sure if they are mostly sold out yet though.
