Review: Kanebo Eye Makeup Remover

Happy New Year 2009! If you partied hard last night, or maybe just partied :) , I hope you all remembered to remove all your makeup before going to bed. After some last minute planning, I had a blast last evening with a new friend, Kahani of Soloverly at The Curve. Yes, it was fun :)

I used to use cleansing oils to remove all my makeup every evening just before my shower and when I say all, I mean ALL including eye makeup. It was as a result of 2 things : (1) running out of eye makeup remover and (2) laziness :P

However, I’ve recently been told that its not a good idea to use just cleansing oils to remove eye makeup, because the skin around the eye is very thin and delicate. When you use oil on the eye area you have to massage it to remove all the makeup and stubborn mascara and this might result in premature wrinkles and lines around the eyes. Also, cleansing oils might contribute to milia or oil seeds around the eye area.

Since I’m vain :P I decided to pick up an eye makeup remover and after my facial at my regular Kanebo International salon one evening, I spotted the Kanebo Eye Makeup Remover.

Kanebo Eye Makeup Remover

The Kanebo Eye Makeup Remover comes in a cute squat square blue-green bottle that’s slightly opaque. You will notice that there are 2 layers of liquid in the bottle. This is an oil based remover to help remove the most stubborn of makeup.

Here’s how I was taught to properly use an eye makeup remover.

  1. Shake the bottle before you use to mix up the oil and water.
  2. Pour some liquid onto a cotton pad, and place over your eyes to soften waterproof mascara (if you are using, if not go to Step 3).
  3. Fold the cotton pad around your 2nd and 3rd fingers and gently, wipe the cotton pad from the top of your eye lid towards your lashes.
  4. Use the edge of the cotton pad to remove all traces of eyeliner and mascara. If you tight line, be careful to remove all traces of liner from under your lash line.
  5. Turn the cotton pad over to the other side and repeat Step 3 and 4 above if you want to save money. If not, use a fresh cotton pad.

Tip: Do not wipe the cotton pad sideways (left to right or vice versa) to remove eye makeup; but wipe it from top to bottom from brow towards your lashes. This will minimize tugging of the skin and reduce the possibility of lines and wrinkles. Also, never drag the delicate skin around your eyes.

I have been using this eye makeup remover for a couple of weeks now, and I like it. I used to use the L’oreal remover that had the two tone blue liquid long before but I noticed that it got hard to find after a while so I’ve stopped looking.

This Kanebo Eye Makeup Remover works very well for me with no scent. I have found that I have to be careful not to pour too much onto the cotton pad, because it can get into my eyes and make things look blurry for a while. That said, it did not irritate my eyes. It removes my Max Factor mascara with 2 swipes of the cotton but it takes a while longer to remove the Diorshow Iconic mascara. Eyeshadow and eyeliner are no match for this makeup remover as it takes it all off with 1 or 2 swipes.

A bottle of Kanebo Eye Makeup remover costs RM38 for 120ml and is available at all Kanebo counters. I’d say its not too expensive because it can last you quite a long while.

Pros: Removes eye makeup easily, no scent, not expensive

Cons: None so far

@sesame: Happy New Year Sesame!

@summer: Its not a silly question! Even if you don’t use mascara, but as long as you use eye shadow, you should use a proper makeup remover. Still, I’m not sure what you are using now so if it works for you then stick with it. But if you find yourself tugging too much at your eyelids, better to switch to a remover.

@vonvon: Glad it was of help to you! I have tried the Estee Lauder one a while back. Does its job but cost too much (and I recall its scented?) But yeah, I’m always looking for something cheaper for these things that run out so quickly! ;)

Happy new year!

Thank you for writing this post. I was the same like you…..just use normal make-up remover and sometimes, cleansing milk, including for eye make up, and still do. But after this, no more!! I begin to notice some lines forming around my eyes a couple months back because i tend to rub the cotton pad soaked with oil remover from the inner corner of my eye to the outer. Now I know why.

I have a bottle of Estee Lauder gentle eye make up remover from the 2008 Blockbuster set. Think gonna try that first. Will share with you and your readers later on how good and effective it is. But thanks again for writing abt this. at least I have a cheaper alternative when I run out of the current one or if it doesn’t work well, who knows?

@hui: Thanks for letting me know – I’m not quite happy with this Kanebo one which works as well and isn’t that much more expensive :)

@Wen: I always wash my face after removing makeup and yes I very lightly wash my eye area too due to the oily feel. Don’t tug at the skin. I usually just run my fingers over my closed lids then splash off the water. Works a treat!

@vichaya: Always a good place to say it! Happy New Year to you too!

@Sue: Isn’t it? :)

@Monstro: Happy New Year! I’ve seen the Maybelline one but not tried it. Glad it works for you.

@Reeka:No it isn’t – i was surprised. I have reviewed the Kanebo beauty salons and ran a promo with them before but its expired unfortunately. You can read my review on the Kanebo salon if you click on the link.

Happy New Year PB!
I use Maybelline eye makeup remover which is super cheap.
Works pretty well, and removes waterproof stuff too.
Though I noticed I had a harder time removing my Anna Sui lash primer, which is very stubborn.
Thanks for the tips on wiping the cotton vertically–no wonder I have lines around my eyes!

Happy NY PB!! :-)

I use the loreal one also. Perhaps I’ll give the kanebo one a try since it’s not that expensive.

and i know that it’s awful to drag our eye skin, but i cant help it!! i mean it needs patient to clean it up-down movement. LOL.
i think i should change my way in this new year. It’s being ageing paranoid person since i turned 30′s.

hei, why dont u review ur facial experience in kanebo Salon.

xoxo

Thanks for the tip. I’ll do just that the next time I wipe eye makeup off. Instead of using a piece of facial cotton, I’d normally dip a Q-tip into the makeup remover (or pour the liquid onto the Q-tip, whichever is more convenient), and then remove my mascara and eyeliner. I feel that it removes the stubborn bits easier that way :)

@Tine: Thanks for the Q-tip tip! Sometimes I despair of getting rid of the liner :)

This is an excellent tip on removing eye makeup! I’m one of those who do the sideways motion to remove my eye makeup. Oops! :)

I might give Kanebo a try since my Clinique sudah habis… hehehe.

Hello it’s the real me. :P

Bought this remover at a whim during one of their “warehouse” sales. Erm,actually prefer the loreal more than this one because this one has a little smell which is a little unpleasant to me.. like minyak tanah. Though it works just as well as loreal’s one, I’ll still go back to loreal’s – which is not very hard to find mah, at any pharmacy, departmental stalls or sasa also got. :)

@FA: LOL at your real me :D I have no idea why I used to have so much trouble finding it. Now I’ll keep my eyes wide open :)
