Back from the holidays!

Aug 27, 2008 | Shopping, Travel

I’m back from my short little break (too short if you ask me!) and it’ll take me a while to get back into the swing of things, work included! Can you say backlog?! :P

Anyway, where was I? HONG KONG! :D

Shopping in HK

Land of the food and the shopping! I ate a LOT (I’m very sure I’ve put on a kilo or two) and I walked a LOT (my legs are still hurting) but surprisingly enough, I did not shop as much as I hoped to. Lots of sales were on but nothing caught my eye. I will write more about the shopping to be found in Hong Kong soon in the weeks to come, including a treatise on the makeup to be found in HK (based on memory). In the meantime, here’s my not very large haul:-

beauty haul

I told you I didn’t buy a lot didn’t I? This was all the beauty stuff I bought from Sasa and Bonjour with only ONE makeup item. I did buy a lot of cleansing oils because they were so cheap there! I got Kose Softymo cleansing oils (which I’d used before) at only HKD35 per bottle. Needless to say, I bought them in bulk!

H&M makeup palette

The bronze wristlet and makeup palette came from H&M. At only HKD59.90 each I couldn’t quite pass them up! I am wearing the palette today and I am truly amazed at the quality.

From Watson’s I picked up an Avalon Organics lavender cleansing gel and a Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara (because I’d read raves about this).

beauty haul watsons

I did also indulge in some clothes for work from G2000 and casuals from the Esprit Outlet, and a pair of Naturalizer shoes from Sogo. Compared to previous HK shopping hauls, this was quite pathetic! :P

Foodwise I indulged and yet found I had only eaten roast duck ONCE in the 2 days I was there! Not enough! I’m going to have to go back for more ;) In the meantime, I’ll provide updates on the stuff I bought as and when I’ve had the opportunity to use it.

  6. ParisB August 27, 2008 6:34 pm

@Monstro : Not really a shopping queen la. Nothing much to show for it LOL…

@sesame: I did see loads of DHC around but I reacted to their oils so didn’t look further. Oops!

    @nikki: I hope not to disappoint! :)
@misssmall: Yay! I got the right mascara lol…

@plue: Hanoi has excellent shopping! Look for lacquer ware (decorative), silk, cheap clothes and don’t forget to gorge on the food! I love Hanoi.

  7. plue August 27, 2008 6:37 pm

me on tight budget, so i doubt can get the silk stuff
u think USD100 is enuff for normal shopping?
just a few souvenirs for close friends and family~~~
    me wanting cosmetics… :(

  8. ParisB August 27, 2008 6:40 pm

    @plue :

Personally, I’d forget cosmetics. You can get quite a lot in Vietnam with US$100 if its all for shopping and silk is super cheap! But if you’re on a budget, I’d actually recommend trying to get Vietnam Dong when you are there. You’ll find that things work out cheaper when you pay by VND than in USD simply because you will be quoted US$1 for everything regardless, since they have no change! So, get some VND and have lots of fun!

ooo…that’s interesting! I tot no one could really resist the shopping wave there!

  10. Faye August 27, 2008 10:16 pm

Avalon’s products are selling locally as well, cheaper though. I’m using the Lavendar Cleasing Gel too, bought that less than RM40.

  11. plue August 28, 2008 8:48 am

    PB,

yeah, i thought so too. cosmetics are meant to buy in TW, JP and HK :P
oh wow! really? that’s good! i thought $100 won’t be enough since I’ve never gone out of the country. cuz food and everything has been paid, and $100 is purely shopping! :D

where do you suggest getting VND? at the local banks? i thought of changing some too since it’s cheaper like you said. I’ve had a friend who didn’t have VND end up paying $10 for a coconut… cuz the seller got no change!

thank you so much for your input! i wanna buy silky shawls! that’d be great gifts! :D oh, by any chance you know the price of the silk shawls?

    cheers,
    plue

@a.min : I enjoy my shopping but I enjoy my money more! ;) Yes I can resist it.

  13. ParisB August 28, 2008 9:41 am

@Faye : Thanks for the info! This violates my #1 rule lol… but where do you get them? Watsons? I rather like it so may switch to it later.

  14. Faye August 28, 2008 10:20 am

I eat and buy lotsa clothes & SHOES in HK….cosmetics..not so coz it’s more expensive than elsewhere. I really like walking there. Heh. Was it warm when you went? Summer clearance sales right? I dun know my season well

  16. pumpkin August 28, 2008 3:07 pm

good to know Max Faxtor Calorie 2000 Mascara in available in Watson in HK. i’m going next month ;o) i used to find them in Bonjour, then later none in HK at all!

  17. prettybeautiful August 28, 2008 3:15 pm

so many cleansing oils O_o will last u for quite some time eh? i wonder why our sasa and watsons here are not as cool as other countries.

  18. ParisB August 28, 2008 5:20 pm

@pumpkin : Yes they have a whole Max Factor counter at Watsons and Mannings too (I think) Have a good trip!

@prettybeautiful: I use the oils everyday so its just nice. Cheap too! As for our Sasa and Watsons I think its to do with the authorities approval of the cosmetics brought in and the demand. In my view, there is less demand here for cosmetics hence less market hence less products.

  19. ParisB August 28, 2008 5:20 pm

@Faye : Thanks for the info!

  20. ParisB August 28, 2008 5:22 pm

@S-Kay : I wasn’t attracted to the clothes this time and my feet are particular about the shoes I wear. Pity. I don’t find cosmetics in HK expensive. Much depends on what we are looking for. Yes it was terribly hot after the typhoon and it was the end of the summer sales. I think most of the good stuff were already snapped up.

  21. irenekay August 29, 2008 12:51 am

Such a coincidence… I was in HK from 17th to 23rd….. did you experience the typhoon or were u back already?

I thought the sales were pretty good! I got tons of stuff from H&M and Uniqlo and FCUK sales were fantastic and their designs are far more better than the on here in KL!! I love the local designer stuff (Not those Ah lian style but those that u can find in those lil boutiques at SOHO + Wellington St) with their quirky design but the price is pretty steep man!! Manage to haul back really cheap G2000 shirts for the boys and few Giordano Concept sales item!! Was quite disappointed cuz there are not many luxury brand were on sales :( …..
and I find the their local shoe brand pretty cheap looking ( like Staccato and Joy and Peace…) Expensive and Vincci looking no offence! Charles and Keith is so much better…! ;P

The only make up I bought is Majolie Marjoca mascara base and mascara and I manage to find BLACK glue for fake eyelashes!!! Sorry am not much a make up fan and I have tons that I need to finish in my drawer….;)
And I find the cosmetics there are the same price as KL…. so no point unless you are looking for those that can’t be found in KL

  22. ParisB August 29, 2008 9:31 am

@irenekay : I went on the 23rd so I just missed the typhoon and you! LOL… I agree with you about shoes and I got some decently priced stuff from G2000.

  23. KS September 1, 2008 2:01 am

Hi PB, I have heard great things about the Softymo Cleansers and I am currently using the Kanebo oil cleanser which you bought! After u have tried the speedy vs whitening vs deep cleansing oil, do give your opinion on which among the three you like most! Thanks!

  24. ParisB September 1, 2008 11:05 am

@KS : I really like Softymo cleansers which we can’t get here now (we used to be able to) I’ll be sure to review them when I use it!

  25. Tine September 1, 2008 7:24 pm

Whee! Great haul! Love the bag ;)

  26. Syen September 2, 2008 12:24 am

Ooohh.. you went to HK too! =)

Hmm.. silly me. Why didn’t I think of the cleansing oils when I was there?

I saw that palette too! But I had to put it back on the shelf coz I kept telling myself I’d already gotten my Nars and MACs. LOL.

  27. ParisB September 2, 2008 10:40 am

@Tine : Yay glad you approve! Can’t wait to see your haul ;)
Syen: It was a bit of a last minute trip and cleansing oils are my only must haves in HK :) Saw your haul - awesome!

  28. Angie September 17, 2008 2:43 pm
