I wrote once before about experiencing acne from Hair Shampoo or Conditioner. It was a horrible experience which led me to be very careful and wary about changing new hair shampoos and conditioners.
One commentator said that it might be attributed to the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in the product which I thought possible, yet strange because I’d been using products with SLS all my life. However, since Sukin Organics has a shampoo and conditioner with no SLS and Parabens in their formula, I decided to pick up a set in Singapore to try.
Sukin Organics Purifying Shampoo is SLS and paraben free for those who are particular about these ingredients in their hair care. However, what this means is that this gentle shampoo does not lather up very much. I am very used to hair shampoo lathering up with just one dollop so having a shampoo that feels a little greasy going on is quite strange and I do end up using more than usual to shampoo my shoulder length hair.
The smell is herby and slightly citrusy which does not bug me. However, I detect a slight oily smell in the shampoo which I do not detect in other products in the Sukin Organics line. This does bug me a little.
I did not experience any acne or problems with excessive hair fall with this shampoo. However, I did find that initially my scalp was dry and flaking. The dry flaky scalp problem reduced after the first 2 weeks but my scalp still feels flakier than before. I wash my hair everyday, so it is important for me to have a shampoo that does not dry my hair out and is gentle. Sukin Organics Purifying Shampoo seems to fit this bill as it doesn’t tangle my hair after washing nor does it weigh it down, but I’m not sure I can get around the flaky scalp and oily smell.
The Purifying Shampoo costs S$19.95 (RM45) / AU$11.95 (RM36) for 500ml which is reasonable in my book.
Shampoo Ingredients: Purified Water, Organic blend of aloe vera, nettle, burdock and horsetail. Decyl Glucoside (vegetable), Cocamidopropyl Betaine (vegetable), PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate (vegetable), Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate (suttocide) vegetable, Citric Acid, tangerine essential oil, mandarin essential oil, lavender essential oil, vanilla extract.
The Sukin Organics Nourishing Conditioner however, is a delight. Just 2 pumps is enough to condition my whole head which is awesome. It doesn’t look very much in my hand but it spreads easily through my hair, detangling as it goes and leaving my hair very soft and smooth and it doesn’t weigh the hair down at all. The essential oils smell isn’t as strong in the conditioner as in the shampoo so it doesn’t really leave much fragrance in the hair after washing it out.
I can see myself repurchasing the Nourishing Conditioner to use in combination with other shampoos perhaps. However, a 500ml bottle does last a long time so it’ll take a while before I need to repurchase. A 500ml bottle of Nourishing Conditioner costs S$19.95 (RM45) / AU$11.95 (RM36) which again, isn’t all that bank breaking.

Cetyl Alcohol (vegetable) Cetrimonium Chloride (vegetable), sesame oil, Glycerin (vegetable), hydrolysed soy protein, wheat germ oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, vitamin E, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate (suttocide) vegetable, Citric Acid, grapefruit seed extract, tangerine essential oil, mandarin essential oil, lavender essential oil, vanilla extract.
Pros: Hair feels soft and untangled, Shampoo is gentle, Conditioner treats hair well
Cons: Shampoo leaves my scalp flaky, Shampoo has oily smell, Not available in Malaysia at time of writing
