Review: Skincare: Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1

Dec 5, 2007 | Lips, Makeup, Product Reviews

khiels_lip_balmWhen I first saw that Kiehl’s had opened its doors at the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, I was keen to try out their #1 product - the Lip Balm #1.

I’d read a lot about it, and many people swear by it for keeping their lips soft and chap-free.

I bought it for RM29.90 and whilst it goes on very emollient, it didn’t make my lips feel any softer than normal. I then forgot about it until recently, when I fell ill and found my lips dry and peeling.

I picked up this tube of lip balm again to sooth my peeling lips and applied the balm liberally. To my utter chagrin, it didn’t help my lips one bit. They were still as dry and were still peeling. I went back to Vaseline Petroleum Jelly, and my lips immediately felt softer and smoother and all the flaky skin fell off.

So, my conclusion is that this is pretty much just expensive petroleum jelly in a tube, but without the effectiveness of Vaseline. I’ll finish up this tube but I won’t re purchase.

Pros: Emollient, handy size
Cons: Expensive, doesn’t work well

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I can’t agree more. Totally overrated. I gave it 2 out of 5.

Sunsense lip balm is good too..I think it’s sunsense. The moisturising effect is immediate especially when it’s almost the time of the month where my skin gets all dry and flaky at some areas. Vaseline is good too =) And yeah, I think Kiehl’s is abit overrated. I wonder if their skincare range is any good.

For me… i use Nivea lip care repair & protect. I’m those type that hate the feeling of lip balm drying up like the brand lip ice. Apply the nivea lip balm at night when you sleep. your lips will feel soft the next morning. no dry film over lips feeling. tried n tested.

they have the new version…. Um… i think it’s Nivea hydrocare lip balm… i wanna try!!

Thanks for the review, PB. I’d been dying to try it out but couldn’t bring myself to pay that much for it.

NIVEA creme (yes, the blue tin) seems to work for my lips. I apply liberally at night as I sleep in air cond and they keep them soft and moisturised. I’m also slightly allergic to most lipsticks and I’ve found the way to overcome it is to apply NIVEA creme first before putting on the lipstick.

The NIVEA lip balms are also great, I’ve been using the cherry flavour since I was in Uni.

I bought that few months back and I think it’s quite okay. Though there’s time I feel that it’s not that great and I still have my chapping lips. I tried out Vaseline once but I didn’t really like the taste of it. Perhaps I should give it a try, again. Nice site BTW. I’ve been thinking of setting up a site all about fashion and stuff like that. Will email you very soon if you don’t mind replying my doubts! ;)

I haven’t found anything that works as well as Dior’s lip treatment that a superb consultant recommended to me many years back. But ever since he left I haven’t gone back to Dior since. I think I should soon… that lippy treatment worked a treat for me! (And I have super sensitive skin that peels and flakes when in contact with the wrong type of food / product / etc.)
