The importance of having proper lighting for makeup

Sep 13, 2007

When doing your makeup, it is advisable that you do it in natural lighting where possible, because most times you will be viewed in natural light. Also, doing it in natural light means that you don’t look strange when you move from one lighting to another or from a lighted room to the outside. Natural light in this context usually means natural daylight.

This is why its important to have correct home lighting especially in your bedroom or wherever you do your makeup. Some people get around this by locating their vanity table next to the window. However, if you live in the tropics as I do, this might not be such a good idea because the heat from the sun will destroy your skincare and makeup. So, one option if you can afford it, is a lighted makeup mirror. This is a mirror which is surrounded by daylight bulbs which simulate natural light. If you like a old Hollywood style then get a large mirror and surround it with daylight bulbs. It will be hot though under those lights.

Alternatively, they sell smaller table top mirrors which have simulated daylight surrounding the mirror to help you do your makeup. This is especially useful on a cloudy day or if you don’t want to disturb anyone you might be sharing your room with.

I don’t own one of these mirrors. When I draw my curtains in the morning, there is enough light for me to work by, or I use my bathroom mirror to double check if I’m uncertain. There are times, like this morning when it was cloudy and dull, when I did wish I had a fancy mirror so I’d get my look right. So, to play it safe, I went for a light neutral look. That’s the other way to get around not being able to see very well in the mornings. hehe…
