Feng Shui recommends that you light up dark areas

Aug 20, 2007

I recently bought a long side table for the corridor in my house. It is quite a long corridor at the entrance, and used to look terribly empty until my table came in. Now, I need something to put on the table! My first thought was to find table lamps that would fit the area. Not only does it add character to the house decor, it will also add some lighting to that space.

Feng Shui dictates that houses should not have dark corridors or areas, as it is not good for the chi. Lamps are recommended as being one of the best ways to light up darker parts of the home, while maintaining a sense of aesthetics.

I don’t practice feng shui on a serious basis, but I adopt the policy that if it feels and looks good, then it must be good feng shui. I don’t really have the time or patience to calculate coordinates and locations. If I were to follow feng shui principles, then even lamps and lampshades must placed according to the sector the lamps are placed in. Sometimes, it just becomes too absurd or looks out of place.

So, my personal philosophy is to find some lamps that I like to look at, and which fit with my present house decor. Presently its a mix between contemporary and traditional. I think it fits however, which is what matters most. The problem is in finding a table lamp that fits the look. I never thought it would be difficult, but it is! Really nice ones are expensive and the cheaper ones are in a word - ugly. So, the search goes on. Maybe something like that in the picture above would do nicely.

    Hi,
Nice light blog on a feng shui thought.

Just a note, I would be careful about assuming “but I adopt the policy that if it feels and looks good, then it must be good feng shui.”
Its a bit like saying “well if it tastes good and looks nice, it must be good for my body”.
Also I noticed you have another feed on salt crystal lamps.
You might be interested to know that the salt crystal lamps emit quite a negative chi for many people. It has something to do with the fact of passing electric current within the crystal. You may want to experiment with removing them from the house (or into a dark cupboard) and notice any changes.
These things you can start to appreciate when you combine Feng Shui with energy awareness training.
Hope this gives some interesting food for thought :)
